Abstract

PURPOSE:To attenuate the vibration of an earthquake, by using a viscous and elastic material. CONSTITUTION:A tank is held by stakes 2 which are supported by a foundation slab 6 on the ground surface. The boundary between the stakes 2 and the foundation slab 6 is filled with viscous and elastic rings 7 for absorbing the vibration energy. The local stress generated by earthquake vibrations at the stakes 2 can be absorbed the shear deformation of the ring material 7 and the expansion or contraction of the stakes 2 due to the rocking vibration of a double-hulled LNG tank 1 is converted to the shear deformation of the material 7 and its energy is absorbed. Application of the material 7 to each foundation slab 6 planted with the stakes 2 is also effective.
