Abstract
1495701 Spot-type disc brakes; fluid pressure braking systems TWIFLEX COUPLINGS Ltd and J STEWART 4 Dec 1974 [7 Dec 1973] 56890/73 Headings F2E and F2F A disc brake for a marine or industrial shaft with end float has a pad 5 movable by a first pneumatic piston-and-cylinder actuator into contact with a disc and then a main hydraulic piston-and-cylinder brake actuator is energized to brake the disc. As shown the first actuator is a double-acting pneumatic cylinder 12 with a piston 13 connected by a rod 14 to a coaxial hydraulically operated piston 8 in a cylinder assembly 1 mounted between frame plates 2. In use air pressure is supplied to port 15 to apply the pad to the disc by a 3-position valve 36 and then hydraulic pressure, from a booster 34 which may include a spring for actuating the brake on fluid pressure failure, to port 11 to brake the disc. The delay between the application of pneumatic and hydraulic pressure is produced by pneumatic logic circuitry shown in Fig. 5. Air supplied to port 16 (Fig. 2) retracts the pad. Retracted pad clearance is maintained constant by a washer 17 which is urged to a tilted position on the shaft by a spring 18 to stop the shaft on retraction when the tilted washer abuts an abutment 19.
