Abstract

PURPOSE:To enhance fracture toughness by adding a sintering aid for a matrix in a certain ratio in accordance with the amt. of whiskers added and carrying out hot pressing after holding at a sintering temp. for a prescribed time or more. CONSTITUTION:A sintering aid such as a powdery Al2O3-Y2O3 mixture is added to matrix forming ceramic powder such as Si3N4 in a prescribed weight ratio, a solvent is further added and they are wet-mixed. The sintering aid for a matrix is added to whiskers such as SiC-based whiskers in the same weight ratio, a solvent is further added and they are wet-mixed. The sintering aid-added whiskers are added to the sintering aid-added ceramic powder by >=15vol.% and they are wet-mixed. This mixture is hot-pressed after holding at a prescribed sintering temp. for >=2hr in an N2 atmosphere to obtain the objective whisker reinforced ceramic sintered compact having high bending strength and high toughness.
