Abstract

PURPOSE:To gradually absorb water and chemical in plants by spreading a water absorbing polymer preparation, prepared by coating a water absorbing polymer with a plant growth regulator, over soil during seeding, transplanting and growing of plants or applying to plants, then sprinkling water and retaining water in the preparation. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous solution or a mixed solution containing an organic solvent such as methanol having dissolved a plant growth regulator (e.g. auxins or gibberellin) is absorbed in powder, powdery granule or granule (e.g. starch/ acrylate graft polymer or crosslinked carboxymethyl cellulose) of water absorbing polymer which is dried and ground or dried while spraying the aqueous solution to give the title water absorbing polymer preparation. The amount of the plant growth regulator contained in the preparation is preferably 0.0002-0.01wt.% based on the water absorbing polymer. The amount of the preparation used is preferably 0.1-5% in the case of blending with dried soil, 10-200kg/10a in case of field and 0.1-200g per stock in application to root.

The present inventor believes that if the water given to the plants during the -times of watering is gradually used in small amounts together with the plant growth moderation agent, the plants can be cultivated sufficiently even if the number of waterings is reduced. As a result of extensive research, we have discovered the water-absorbing polymer formulation of the present invention, believing that it can be carried out easily and also lead to savings in water and labor.

The water-absorbing polymer used in the present invention is a polymeric substance that is sparingly soluble or virtually insoluble in water, and means one that absorbs a large amount of water and swells when it comes into contact with water. The water absorption capacity is better as it is larger, but usually it is sufficient as long as it absorbs 50 times or more of water, preferably 100 to 1500 times the weight of the water-absorbing polymer. Examples of such water-absorbing polymers include starch/ Acrylate graft polymer, carboxymethylcellulose crosslinked product, vinyl alcohol/acrylate copolymer, polyacrylonitrile hydrolyzate, crosslinked polyacrylate, modified polyvinyl alcohol, crosslinked polyethylene oxide, vinyl-monomethyl maleate copolymer , isobutylene-maleic anhydride copolymer, and the like.
