Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide a metallic paint which is free from the settling of pigment and gives a coating film excellent in brightness by mixing a silver-coated flake, obtd. by coating a glass flake with silver, into the coating material. CONSTITUTION:A silver-coated flake is prepd. by coating a glass flake with silver by, e.g. electroless plating. The coated flake is mixed, as a metallic pigment, with a base resin (e.g. an acrylic resin), a crosslinker (e.g. a methylolated melamine resin), a solvent, and other pigments if necessary, giving a metallic paint. The paints is applied to, e.g. the surface of an exterior panel of an automobile or motorcycle, and a clear paint is applied to the coated surface.

A paint film made of metallic paint sparkles as incident light from the outside reflects on the scale-like metallic pigment contained in the paint film, and the paint film has a rich variety of colors that vary with the various tones of the paint film. It has a unique appearance with excellent cosmetic properties, and is often applied to the exterior panels of automobiles and motorcycles.

Conventionally, the above-mentioned metallic pigments include flaky aluminum powder; mica flake particles coated with metal oxides such as titanium oxide and iron oxide; graphite particles; iron oxide particles whose main component is α-iron oxide crystal particles; etc. are often used. However, although these metallic pigments have normal glitter properties (sparkling feeling),
Furthermore, it has been desired to develop a metallic coating film exhibiting a stronger glitter than these, and these metallic pigments have not been sufficient. Furthermore, among these particles, iron oxide particles having excellent glittering properties have a problem in that they have a large specific gravity and tend to settle in paints.

The base resin in the clear paint is preferably one with excellent weather resistance, smoothness, and sharpness, such as acrylic resin, polyester resin, alkyd resin, and fluororesin, which have functional groups that react with the crosslinking agent. (For example, a hydroxyl group, a carboxyl group, an epoxy group, a glycidyl group). The crosslinking agent reacts with the base resin to three-dimensionally crosslink and cure it, so specific examples include methylolated and/or alkyl etherified melamine resins, urea resins, polyisocyanate compounds (including blocked products), etc. can be given.

The object to be coated (for example, metal or plastic) is subjected to surface treatment, primer coating, and intermediate coating as necessary, and then the metallic coating is applied. Although the coating film thickness is not limited, it is preferably 10 to 30 μm based on the cured coating film. After the metallic coating film is cured at room temperature to 160°C, or in an uncured state, the above-mentioned clear paint is applied to the surface of the coating film. The clear coating film is 20~ based on the cured coating film.
A range of 1001,L is suitable. After applying the clear paint, it is preferable to harden it in a room fA to 160°C.

The metallic feel (glitter) of the metallic paint film formed using the metallic paint of the present invention is significantly superior to that of those using conventional metallic pigments, and it shines brightly even under sunlight. A metallic coating is obtained. In addition, the silver-coated glass flake pigment has a specific gravity of approximately 3.
Therefore, it hardly settles in the paint.

Apply by air spray. Then, it was observed at room temperature for 10 minutes to confirm the following effects. That is, the coating film obtained in Example 2 exhibits a unique luster that far exceeds that of aluminum or iron oxide when exposed to direct sunlight, and shows little decrease in luster when exposed to sunlight. In addition, the brightness of the metallic coating film of Example 2 is not limited to highlights,
It shines to the same degree from all angles, and the way it shines is not only on the surface of the paint film, but also from within the film, giving it a brilliance similar to that of diamonds, giving it a three-dimensional color appearance.
