Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce a light leak and to prevent the display quality from deteriorating by sticking spacers on the light shield part of a substrate. CONSTITUTION:A mask 4 is formed by forming round or rectangular opening parts 4a in a thin plate by electroforming, etching, etc., in conformity with the pattern of the light shield part 3. The mask 4 is placed on the substrate 1 and then positioned so that the light shield part 3 meets the opening part 4a. While they are pressed by a coating tool in this state, the spacers 5 are moved as shown by an arrow A and then the mask 4 is removed, thereby obtaining the substrate 1 where the spacers 5 are stuck selectively on the light shield part 3. Consequently, the spacers are stuck on the light shield part and not present at a display picture element part, so the transmission of light by the spacers is eliminated and there is no influence of light scattering due to a difference in refractive index from liquid crystal, so as excellent display image is obtained.

Means for Solving the Problems In order to solve the above-mentioned problems, the present invention selectively attaches spacers to the light-shielding portion of a substrate. To selectively attach spacers, a mask having an opening is placed on the substrate and the spacers are attached to the light shielding portion of the substrate. A method of attaching a spacer through an opening, a method of attaching a spacer to a contact jig equipped with a protrusion, a method of stacking and pressing the spacer on a substrate and transferring the spacer to a light shielding part, or a method of attaching a spacer to a contact jig equipped with a groove. A preferred method is to use a tool to stack the spacer on a substrate with spacers attached to the entire surface, and then transfer the spacer to a contact jig so that it remains in the light-shielding part.

Effect With the above configuration, the spacer adheres to the light shielding part and there is no spacer in the display pixel part, so there is no light transmission through the spacer, and there is no effect of light scattering due to the difference in refractive index from the liquid crystal. A good display image can be obtained.

The substrate 1 has a pixel section 2 and a light shielding section 3 formed on its surface. The mask 4 of this embodiment is a thin plate that is electroformed, etched, etc. in accordance with the pattern of the light shielding portion 3 described above, and has a plurality of round or square openings 4a. After placing the mask 4 on the substrate 1, positioning is performed so that the light shielding portion 3 and the opening 4a are aligned. Next, in this state, the spacer 5 is moved in the direction of arrow A while being pressed with an applicator such as a squeegee 8 used in screen printing, and the mask 4 is removed.
A substrate 1 having spacers 5 selectively attached thereto can be obtained.

First, spacers 5 are scattered on the surface of the substrate 1 and adhered to the entire surface, resulting in the state shown in FIG. 3(a). Next, a concave contact jig 7 having a groove 7a corresponding to the light shielding part 3 is overlapped. At this time, positioning is performed so that the groove 7a of the concave contact jig 7 and the light shielding part 3 of the substrate 1 are aligned. Next, when the concave contact jig 7 is removed, the spacer of the pixel portion 2 is removed, and the spacer 5 can be selectively left only in the light shielding portion 3.
