Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance position measuring accuracy by measuring the distance and relative speed between a GPS (global position system) satellite and a GPS receiver and determining the position of a vehicle on the basis of the measured values of both of them when the vehicle equipped with GPS receiver is stopped.
CONSTITUTION: A receiving apparatus has an antenna 10, a GPS receiver for amplifying, detecting and demodulating the output thereof and a position measuring mode selection means. The distance between a satellite SVi (i=1 - 4) and a receiver is measured by a range counter 28 and the Doppler shift frequency fdi of the carrier wave signal (f) from the satellite SVi is detected by a range rate counter 36 and the relative speed between the satellite SVi and the receiver. When a vehicle is stopped, the position measuring mode selection means is automatically changed over from a moving point measuring mode to a fixed point measuring mode. By determining the position of the vehicle on the basis of the outputs of both counters 28, 36, accurate position data can be obtained. Even when a stop time is short and an operation is not in time, calculation can be performed later and, therefore, there is no trouble.
