Description

【発明の詳細な説明】 〔産業上の利用分野〕 本発明は、インクの中に浸されている圧力発生部材に電
圧を印加して圧力発生部材を変位させ、ノズル形成基板
との間隙に存在するインクの圧力を高めてノズルからイ
ンク滴を吐出させる機構のインクジェットヘッドに関す
る。
〔従来の技術〕
複数のノズルを有するノズル形成基板と、ノズルの各々
と対向配置し、インクの中に浸されている圧力発生部材
とを備え、電圧印加により圧力発生部材を変位させ、ノ
ズル形成基板との間隙に存在するインクの圧力を高めて
ノズルからインク滴を吐出させるオンデマンド型インク
ジェットヘッドは、例えば特公昭60−8953号に開
示されており、このインクジェット機構は、圧力発生部
材がノズル形成基板に対し概ね垂直方向に変位する事と
、ノズルのインク流路が短い事により、インク滴の吐出
効率及び吐出安定性に優れ、かつインク中に気泡やゴミ
等が混入した場合でもその影響を受ける事無く正常に動
作し、更には、圧力発生部材が片持ちもしくは両持ち梁
構造である事により、電気機械変換効率が高く、低い電
圧で必要とする圧力発生部材変位をもたらす事が出来る
という特徴を有する。
〔発明が解決しようとする課題〕
このタイプのインクジェットヘッドにおいては、圧力発
生部材とノズル形成基板との間隙の寸法が、インク滴の
吐出スピード・吐出量・吐出応答性といったインクジェ
ット特性に大きな影響を与える事が判っているものの、
満足のいく特性を獲得する事は非常に難しく、各特性間
のトレードオフによってヘッドの仕様が決定されていた
。即ち、インク滴の吐出スピードと吐出量を決定する圧
力発生部材の振動は、ノズル形成基板との間隙に存在す
るインクが有する慣性と粘性に大きく左右さ九所望の吐
出スピードと吐出量を得る為には、間隙の寸法をある一
定の範囲に抑える必要があるのに対し、吐出応答性は、
間隙が狭い程低下する傾向にあり、吐出スピード・吐出
量・吐出応答性の全てに満足のいく様な間隙に設定する
事は、事実上不可能だった。
本発明の目的は、こうした技術課題を解決して、インク
滴の吐出スピード・吐出量・吐出応答性といった緒特性
の向上を同時に達成し、性能の優れたインクジェットヘ
ッドを提供する事にある。
〔課題を解決するための手段〕
本発明におけるインクジェットヘッドは、複数のノズル
を有するノズル形成基板と、ノズルの各々と対向配置し
、インクの中に浸されている圧力発生部材とを備え、電
圧印加により圧力発生部材を変位させ、ノズル形成基板
との間隙に存在するインクの圧力を高めてノズルからイ
ンク滴を吐出させるインクジェットヘッドであって、圧
力発生部材内に、ノズル形成基板の逆側からノズル形成
基板側へのインク整流機能を有する流体整流素子が設け
られている事を特徴とする。
〔作用〕
本発明の上記の構成によれば、インク滴吐出後のノズル
メニスカスの復元に必要とされるインクの供給は、圧力
発生部材内に設けられている流体整流素子を通して行な
われる。
〔実施例〕
本発明における実施例を、図面に基づき説明する。
第1図は、本発明におけるインクジェットヘッドを搭載
した記録装置の一実施例を説明するための斜視図である
。記録媒体1は、送りローラー2・3の押圧によりプラ
テン4に捲き回され、記録の進行に従い矢印5の方向に
搬送、される、ガイド軸6・7に案内されプラテン4の
軸と平行な方向に移動可能なキャリッジ8上には、複数
のノズルを有するインクジェットヘッド9が搭載されて
おり、矢印10の方向に移動しつつ各々のノズルからイ
ンク滴を吐出して記録媒体上にインク像を形成する。
第2図(a)  ・ (b)  ・ (c)は、本発明
におけるインクジェットヘッドの構造、インク滴の吐出
原理、インク滴吐出後のノズルメニスカスの復元の様子
を説明するためのヘッド断面図である。
ノズル形成基板11には、複数のノズル12が設けられ
、各々のノズル12には、圧電素子13と金属板14の
積層材から成る圧力発生部材15が対向配置され、イン
ク16中に浸された構造となっている。更に、圧力発生
部材15のノズル12との対応部には、圧力発生部材1
5を貫く穴17と、穴17のノズル形成基板11側開口
部を覆い圧力発生部材15の一部18と固着している弾
性薄板19とで構成される流体整流素子20が設けられ
ている。圧電素子13に電圧21を印加すると、圧電素
子13が収縮し、金属板14とで構成されるバイメタル
作用によって、圧力発生部材15は、ノズルの方向22
へ変形する。この変形によって圧力発生部材15とノズ
ル形成基板11との間隙23に存在するインクの圧力が
高まり、ノズル12からインク滴24が吐出する(第2
図(b))。インク滴24の吐出後の、圧力発生部材1
5の自由振動もしくは電圧21の解除による圧力発生部
材15の方向25への変位に起因するノズルメニスカス
26の引き込みの復元は、圧力発生部材15の方向25
への変位に対応するインクの供給を、弾性3板19の変
形による圧力発生部材15を貫く穴17を通してのイン
ク流れ27によって行う事により達成される(第2図(
C))。
本実施例における流体整流素子は、圧力発生部材15を
貫く穴17と弾性薄板19のみによって構成され、構造
が簡単な為、製造が容易である。
第3図(a)・(b)・(C)・(d)は、本発明にお
けるインクジェットヘッドの圧力発生部材内に設けられ
る流体整流素子の別の実施例並びにその整流作用を説明
するための圧力発生部材の断面図と斜視図である。図中
、第2図と同じ構成要素には、同じ番号が付しである。
本実施例の流体整流素子28は、圧力発生部材15のノ
ズル(図示せず)の対応部に貫かれた穴29と、穴29
のノズル形成基板側と逆側の開口部に固着し穴2つと同
軸上に穴30を有する薄板31と、穴29のノズル形成
基板側の開口部の一部32と固着している弾性薄板33
と、薄板31と弾性薄板33とに押圧された状態で穴2
9の中に納まっている球体34とで構成されている(第
3図(a)  ・ (b))。この様な構造を有する圧
力発生部材15は、ノズルの方向22へ変形する時には
、圧力発生部材15とノズル形成基板(図示せず)との
間隙に存在するインクの圧力が高まり、球体34が薄板
31の穴30を塞いで穴29をインクが流れないのに対
しく第3図(c))、方向25へ変形する時には、圧力
発生部材15とノズル形成基板(図示せず)との間隙に
存在するインクの圧力が低下し、球体34が弾性薄板3
3を変形させ球体34と薄板31の穴30との間に隙間
が生じ、穴29にインク流れ35が起こる為(第3図(
d))、圧力発生部材15はその中に流体整流素子を備
える事となる。本実施例の流体整流素子は、インク流れ
35が穴29に対しほぼ対称に起きる為、インク流れ2
7が穴17に対し非対称に起きる第一の実施例の流体整
流素子よりも性能が良い。第二の実施例の亜種として、
薄板31を金属板14で兼用する構造の流体整流素子も
可能であり、本構造の流体整流素子は、圧力発生部材1
5に薄板31を固着する工程を省け、圧力発生部材15
に穴29を穿つ工程と、金属板14に穴30を穿つ工程
とを、周知のフォトリソグラフィ技術を用いて一貫して
行なえるので製造上有利である。
〔発明の効果〕
以上述べたように、本発明によれば、圧力発生部材内に
、ノズル形成基板の逆側からノズル形成基板側へのイン
ク整流機能を有する流体整流素子が設けられており、イ
ンク滴吐出後のノズルメニスカスの復元に必要とされる
インクの供給が、圧力発生部材内に設けられている流体
整流素子を通して行なわれるので、従来は吐出応答性の
面から採用不可能であった、圧力発生部材とノズル形成
基板との間隙の狭い領域が採用可能となり、従ってイン
ク滴の吐出スピード・吐出量・吐出応答性といった緒特
性が同時に向上した、性能の優れたインクジェットヘッ
ドを提供する事が出来、こうした性能の優れたインクジ
ェットヘッドを搭載する事により、高性能の記録装置を
実現する事が可能となる。また、本発明によれば、圧力
発生部材とノズル形成基板との間隙に存在するインクが
有する粘性によって消費されるエネルギーロスが低減し
、消費電力の低下に貢献するとともに、圧力発生部材と
ノズル形成基板との間隙の寸法のマージンが広がり、製
造上有利に作用する。

Claims (1)

  1. 【特許請求の範囲】  複数のノズルを有するノズル形成基板と、前記ノズル
    の各々と対向配置し、インクの中に浸されている圧力発
    生部材とを備え、電圧印加により前記圧力発生部材を変
    位させ、前記ノズル形成基板との間隙に存在するインク
    の圧力を高めて前記ノズルからインク滴を吐出させるイ
    ンクジェットヘッドにおいて、 前記圧力発生部材内に、前記ノズル形成基板の逆側から
    前記ノズル形成基板側へのインク整流機能を有する流体
    整流素子が設けられている事を特徴とするインクジェッ
    トヘッド。
