Abstract

PURPOSE:To avoid printing directly on a platen and eliminate the need to adjust a printing position for each paper width by providing a position-recognizing sensor for recognizing the positions of tractors. CONSTITUTION:A pair of tractors 4 and 5 are slidably fitted to a shaft 6, and each of the tractors 4, 5 is provided with a linear sensor 7 for recognizing the position thereof on the shaft 6. The shaft 6 is provided with pattern data for position recognition, and the linear sensor 7 reads the pattern data to detect the present position of the relevant tractor 4, 5. A maximum printing range 8 for a printing head 2 is determined based on data on the current positions of the tractors 4, 5 detected by the linear sensors 7, and the head 2 is so controlled as not to print beyond the maximum printing range 8 even when erroneous data exceeding the range 8 is externally inputted.
