Description
本出願は、2016年1月17日に出願された米国仮出願第62/279,823号に対する優先権を主張し、この仮出願はその全体が本明細書において参照として援用される。
本発明は、電気泳動ディスプレイおよびその一部、例えば、前面ラミネートの製造に使用するためのシーリング配合物に関する。開示されるポリヒドロキシ界面活性剤が、シーリング層または結合剤層に使用されるシーリング配合物に含まれる場合、層は、改善された湿潤性を有する。改善した湿潤性により、シーリング層またはカプセル化された電気泳動媒体の層のより一貫した塗布が可能になる。
一見単純であるが、電気泳動媒体および電気泳動デバイスは、複雑な挙動を表示する。例えば、単純な「オン/オフ」電圧パルスは、電子リーダーにおいて高精度なテキストを達成するには不十分なことが発見されている。それどころか、状態の間で粒子を駆動させ、新たな表示されたテキストが、以前のテキストの記憶、すなわち、「ゴースト」を保たないことを確実にするには、難解な「波形」が必要である。例えば、米国特許出願第20150213765号を参照されたい。電場、内部相、すなわち、粒子(顔料)および流体の混合物が複雑に混ぜ合わされると、荷電化学種と電場が印加される際の周囲環境(例えばカプセル化媒体)の間の相互反応のため、想定外の挙動を呈し得る。さらに、想定外の挙動は、流体、顔料またはカプセル化媒体中の不純物に起因することがある。したがって、電気泳動ディスプレイが、内部相の組成物における変化にどのように反応することになるかを予測するのは困難である。
本発明は、電気泳動ディスプレイの製作において使用するための、改善したシーリング組成物に関する。典型的には、電気泳動ディスプレイは、少なくとも、光透過性電極、荷電粒子を含む電気泳動媒体、およびシーリング層を含む。シーリング層は、ポリヒドロキシ界面活性剤を含むシーリング組成物を含む。シーリング組成物は、任意選択で、導電性フィラー、例えばカーボンブラック、グラファイト、グラフェン、金属フィラメント、金属粒子またはカーボンナノチューブを含む。ポリヒドロキシ界面活性剤も、シーリング層から、界面活性剤の少なくとも一部の電気泳動媒体への移行を助長するように、電気泳動媒体に分散可能である。一部の事例では、シーリング組成物は、電気泳動媒体、例えば、複数のタンパク質コアセルベートカプセル内にカプセル化された電気泳動媒体のカプセル化部分の間で結合剤に存在する。
様々なタイプの電気泳動ディスプレイの性能は、ポリヒドロキシ界面活性剤を電気泳動ディスプレイのシーリングまたは結合剤層に含むことにより、改善できる。例えば、ポリヒドロキシ界面活性剤をシーリング層に添加することで、電気泳動ディスプレイにおける、明(オン)および暗(オフ)状態の間のコントラストを改善できる。さらに、添加剤は、ディスプレイが画像の間でスイッチされた後での、「ゴースト発生」として公知の現象である、残像の発生率および強度を低下させる。さらに、ポリヒドロキシ界面活性剤が、シーリング層に含まれるが、電気泳動媒体には含まれない場合、電気泳動ディスプレイは、やはり性能の改善を達成するが、これは、ポリヒドロキシ界面活性剤が、シーリング層から電気泳動媒体中へと移行するためと考えられる。一部の実施形態では、ポリヒドロキシ界面活性剤は、電気泳動ディスプレイのミクロセル層または接着剤層に含まれる。
本発明の好ましい実施形態によれば、例えば、以下が提供される。
(項1)
電気泳動ディスプレイ用のシーリング組成物であって、前記ディスプレイは、光透過性電極、荷電粒子を含む電気泳動媒体、および前記シーリング組成物を含むシーリング層を含み、前記シーリング組成物は、前記電気泳動媒体に分散可能なポリヒドロキシ界面活性剤を含む、シーリング組成物。

前記ポリヒドロキシ界面活性剤が、ポリヒドロキシアセチレン部分である、上記項1に記載のシーリング組成物。
(項3)
前記ポリヒドロキシアセチレン部分が、式I:
(式中、R 4 およびR 5 が、独立して、Hであるか、またはC 1 〜C 36 分枝状もしくは非分枝状の、飽和もしくは不飽和のアルキルであり、R 6 およびR 7 が、独立して、−OH、−(OCH 2 ) m OH 5 、−(OCH 2 CH 2 ) n OHまたは−(OCH 2 CHCH 3 ) p OHであり、m、nおよびpが、1から30の整数である)を含む、上記項2に記載のシーリング組成物。

前記ポリヒドロキシアセチレン部分が、2,4,7,9−テトラメチルデシン−4,7−ジオール;1,4−ジメチル−1,4−ビス(2−メチルプロピル)−2−ブチン−1,4−ジイルエーテル;または2,5,8,11テトラメチル6ドデシン−5,8ジオールエトキシレートである、上記項3に記載のシーリング組成物。

前記ポリヒドロキシアセチレン部分が、式II:

- 電気泳動ディスプレイ用のシーリング組成物であって、前記ディスプレイは、光透過性電極、荷電粒子を含む電気泳動媒体、および前記シーリング組成物を含むシーリング層を含み、前記シーリング組成物は、ポリヒドロキシ界面活性剤を含み、ここで、前記ポリヒドロキシ界面活性剤が、式I:
(式中、R4およびR5が、独立して、Hであるか、またはC1〜C36分枝状もしくは非分枝状の、飽和もしくは不飽和のアルキルであり、そしてR6およびR7が、独立して、−OH、−(OCH2)mOH、−(OCH2CH2)nOHまたは−(OCH2CHCH3)pOHであり、m、nおよびpが、1から30の整数である)で表されるポリヒドロキシアセチレンである、

- 前記ミクロセルが、熱可塑性物質、または二官能性UV硬化性成分、光開始剤および剥離剤を含む組成物から形成される、請求項11に記載のシーリング組成物。
