本発明は、双方向テレビ番組ガイドに関し、より詳細には、このような双方向テレビ番組ガイドにローカル広告を提供する技術に関する。

受動テレビ番組ガイドでは、専用テレビチャンネル上でテレビ番組リスト項目のスクロール、ページ化リストを提供する。テレビユーザは、その専用チャンネルにチューニングすることによりテレビ番組リスト項目を視聴することができる。受動型番組ガイドの上部は、広告映像およびその映像に関連するテキストを用いた説明を表示するために用いられ得る。テキスト説明の内容は、特定の分野を対象とし得る。米国特許出願第５，５５９，５４８号（Ｄａｖｉｓら）に、異なる内容を同時に表示することが可能な受動型の電子番組ガイドシステムについての記載がある。

双方向テレビ番組ガイドは、テレビユーザがより高度な操作（例えば、ユーザが選択した形式で番組リスト項目を表示すること、ジャンルサーチ、ペイパービュー注文など）を行うことを可能にする。双方向番組ガイドは典型的には、マイクロプロセッサをベースとするセットトップボックス上で実現される。番組リスト項目データは、中央型データ配信設備から、ユーザのケーブルシステムヘッドエンドを介してセットトップボックスへと送信される。これらの番組リスト項目データは典型的には、双方向番組ガイドがアクセスすることが可能なセットトップボックス内のメモリに格納される。

双方向番組ガイドは、１９９８年３月４日に出願された、Ｋｎｕｄｓｏｎらによる米国特許出願第０９／０３４，９３９号と、１９９８年４月３０日に出願された、Ｋｎｕｄｓｏｎらによる米国特許出願第０９／０７０，６０４号と、１９９８年４月３０日に出願された、Ｋｎｕｄｓｏｎらによる米国特許出願第０９／０７０，５５５号と、１９９８年４月３０日に出願された、Ｂｏｙｌａｎ，ＩＩＩらによる米国特許出願第０９／０７０，７００号とに記載されているように、広告を表示するために用いられ得る。本明細書中、同出願全体を、参考のため援用する。双方向番組ガイド広告は、様々な製品およびサービスに関する有用な情報をユーザに提供する。例えば、双方向番組ガイド広告を用いて次回のテレビ番組を宣伝することができる。双方向番組ガイド広告を用いて、番組と関係の無い製品およびサービスを宣伝することもできる。

双方向番組ガイド広告は、中央型設備から全国に配信することができるため、このような広告は全国ベースで製品およびサービスを宣伝するのに適している。しかし、双方向番組ガイド広告を全国ベースのみで配信すると、全国ベースで配信しない場合に可能であるのと同じだけの有用なローカル広告情報をユーザに提供しないこととなる。米国特許出願第５，６５９，３５０（Ｈｅｎｄｒｉｃｋｓら）号に、双方向テレビ番組ガイドを用いずに、ローカル的な番組編成をテレビ信号に挿入するシステムについての記載がある。

米国特許出願第５，６００，３６４号（Ｈｅｎｄｒｉｃｋｓら）および米国特許出願第５，５８９，１９２号（Ｋｎｅｅら）に記載されているシステムでは、リモートプロセッサにより、ユーザのディスプレイに表示される内容（例えば、広告の内容など）が決定される。しかし、同出願の機構では、リモートプロセッサに負担がかかり得る。従って、本発明の目的は、ユーザにローカル番組ガイド広告を提供することが可能な双方向番組ガイドシステムを提供することである。 本発明の別の目的は、広告の内容に基づいて広告を表示することのできる、双方向テレビ番組ガイドシステムを提供することである。

（発明の要旨）
本発明の上記および他の目的は、テレビ配信設備に関連付けられたユーザテレビ機器上で実現される双方向テレビ番組ガイドに、ローカル（すなわち、非グローバル）広告を提供するシステムを提供することにより、本発明の原理に従って達成される。

本発明の別の局面は、所定の広告をタイムシフトすることに関する。ある状況に置いて、意図された視聴者に、よりよく到達し得るように、広告のタイムシフトをするのが望ましいことがある。例えば、ネットワークテレビ番組が、（東部標準時間と山地標準時間とでは、２つの標準時間帯を隔てているにも関わらず）東部標準時間の午後８時、山地標準時間の午後７時に放送され得る。広告が、東部標準時間の午後８時直前に全国的に配信されて放送される場合（例えば、東部標準時間の午後７時５５分に）、その広告は、（タイムシフトされていなければ）、山地標準時間の午後５時５５分に放送される。これは、望ましくないことがある。なぜなら、午後７時のテレビ番組に対する午後５時５５分の広告は、午後７時のテレビ番組に対する午後６時５５分の広告ほど効果的であり得ないからだ。従って、この状況では、山地標準時間で午後５時５５分の広告の表示を、山地標準時間の午後６時５５分まで遅らせる（タイムシフトさせる）ことが望ましいかも知れない。

広告のタイムシフトに関する工程を図１９に示す。工程１４２では、グローバル広告が配信される。所与のグローバル広告をタイムシフトすることが望ましい標準時間帯では、工程１４４で、（例えば、テレビ配信設備５２の広告データベース５７内に）広告が一時的に格納され得る。他の標準時間帯では、グローバル広告は通常通り表示され得る。工程１４６では、番組ガイドによりタイムシフトされた広告が表示され得る（例えば、テレビ配信設備５２内の広告データベース５７からユーザテレビ機器５４に送信され、テレビ６２の番組ガイドにより表示される）。

本発明の他の局面は、テレビ配信設備５２による広告利用に関連する実施要綱に関する。例えば、テレビ配信設備５２が所定の広告をタイムシフトすることを、禁止するのが望ましい場合がある。また、テレビ配信設備５２が（例えば、その広告に上書きしたり、または対応するローカル広告を提供したりすることにより）所与の広告を改変することを、禁止するのが望ましい場合がある。

図２０に示すように、システム４４は、工程１４８において、それらの広告がどのように利用され得るかを規定する情報（即ち、広告利用情報）を広告に備えることにより、広告利用要綱の適用を容易にし得る。広告利用要綱は、テレビ配信設備５２が、所定の広告をタイムシフトしようと試みたり、（例えば、そのような広告に上書きを試みたり、または対応するローカル広告の提供を試みたりすることにより）所定の広告を改変しようと試みたりするとき、工程１５０において、広告利用要綱を適用し得る。

図２０の工程を実施するための別の方法を図２２に示す。工程１５８では、主設備４６が、様々な広告に対する利用要綱を規定するテレビ配信設備５２に、広告利用要綱メッセージを配信する。工程１６０では、テレビ配信設備５２が、要綱メッセージにより規定された広告利用要綱に従い、ユーザテレビ機器５４上の番組ガイドにより表示される広告を配信する。例えば、要綱メッセージが、広告がタイムシフトされ得ないことを示している場合、そうでない場合にその広告をタイムシフトすることを望むテレビ配信設備５２は、そのようなタイムシフト動作を実行することを許可されず、その広告を通常通りユーザテレビ機器５４に配信する。

Claims (18)

  1. ユーザテレビ機器であって、
    双方向テレビ番組ガイドを表示する手段と、
    グローバル広告と前記グローバル広告に対応するローカル広告とをデータストリームの一部として受信する手段であって、前記ローカル広告は、特定の地理的領域に特有のものであり、前記ローカル広告の内容は、前記グローバル広告の内容に関連している、手段と、
    前記グローバル広告を前記双方向テレビ番組ガイドに表示する手段と、
    前記双方向テレビ番組ガイドに表示された前記グローバル広告を選択する機会をユーザに提供する手段と、
    前記ユーザが前記グローバル広告を選択したときには常に、前記グローバル広告に対応する前記ローカル広告を表示する手段と
    を含む、ユーザテレビ機器。
  2. 前記ローカル広告は、テレビ配信設備から受信される、請求項１に記載のユーザテレビ機器。
  3. 前記ローカル広告は、グローバルデータストリームの一部として受信される、請求項１に記載のユーザテレビ機器。
  4. 前記ローカル広告は、グローバル広告を含むグローバルデータストリームの一部として受信される、請求項１に記載のユーザテレビ機器。
  5. 前記ローカル広告は、グローバルデータストリームの一部として受信され、前記ローカル広告は、前記グローバルデータストリームのグローバル広告を上書きすることによって前記グローバルデータストリームの一部に挿入されている、請求項１に記載ユーザテレビ機器。
  6. 前記ローカル広告は、グローバルデータストリームの一部として受信され、前記ローカル広告は、前記グローバルデータストリームの予約された帯域幅に挿入されている、請求項１に記載のユーザテレビ機器。
  7. 前記ローカル広告は、グローバルデータストリームの一部として受信され、前記ローカル広告は、前記グローバルデータストリームの予約されたスロットに挿入されている、請求項１に記載のユーザテレビ機器。
  8. 前記ローカル広告および前記グローバル広告は、グローバルデータストリームの一部として受信され、前記ローカル広告は、前記グローバルデータストリームのローカル広告のための予約された帯域幅に挿入されている、請求項１に記載のユーザテレビ機器。
  9. 前記ローカル広告は、グローバルデータストリームから分離したデータストリームとして受信される、請求項１に記載のユーザテレビ機器。
  10. 前記グローバル広告および前記ローカル広告は、テレビ配信設備から受信される、請求項１に記載のユーザテレビ機器。
  11. 番組ガイド情報、前記グローバル広告、前記ローカル広告は、テレビ配信設備から受信される、請求項１に記載のユーザテレビ機器。
  12. 前記ローカル広告を表示する前記手段は、
    ユーザが前記グローバル広告を選択したときは常に、対応する全画面ローカル広告を表示する手段をさらに含む、請求項１に記載のユーザテレビ機器。
  13. グローバル広告およびローカル広告の表示を繰り返す手段をさらに含む、請求項１に記載のユーザテレビ機器。
  14. 前記双方向テレビ番組ガイドにグローバルバナー広告を表示する手段と、
    前記グローバルバナー広告およびローカル広告の表示を繰り返す手段と
