BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a light emitting element driving apparatus and an image forming apparatus, and more particularly to a light emitting element driving apparatus suitable for driving a laser element used as a light source in laser xerography and an image forming apparatus including the same.
[0002]
[Prior art]
In the field of laser xerography using a laser element as a light source, there is an increasing demand for higher resolution and higher speed. There is a limit to the speed (hereinafter referred to as modulation speed) at which on / off control of driving of the laser element is performed according to input image data. In the case where the number of laser beams is one, if the resolution in the sub-scanning direction is increased as well as the resolution in the main scanning direction, the modulation speed must be sacrificed. Therefore, the only way to increase the resolution in the sub-scanning direction without increasing the modulation speed is to increase the number of laser beams. For example, when the number of laser light beams is four, the resolution in the main scanning / sub-scanning direction can be doubled on the assumption that the modulation speed is the same as in the case of one.
[0003]
A semiconductor laser used as a light source for laser xerography includes an edge-emitting laser element (hereinafter referred to as an edge-emitting laser) having a structure in which laser light is extracted in a direction parallel to the active layer, and the laser light is perpendicular to the active layer. It is roughly classified into surface emitting laser elements (hereinafter, referred to as surface emitting lasers) having a structure that can be taken out in any direction. Conventionally, in laser xerography, an edge emitting laser is generally used as a laser light source.
[0004]
However, from the viewpoint of increasing the number of laser light beams, edge-emitting lasers are technically difficult, and structurally, surface-emitting lasers increase the number of laser light beams more than edge-emitting lasers. It is advantageous. For these reasons, in recent years, in the field of laser xerography, in order to respond to the demand for higher resolution and higher speed, an apparatus using a surface emitting laser capable of emitting many laser light beams as a laser light source Development is underway.
[0005]
A surface emitting laser generally has a higher internal resistance than an edge emitting laser. As a method for high-speed modulation of emitted light of a laser having a high internal resistance, there is a method using voltage driving as disclosed in
[0006]
As shown in FIG. 12A, in

[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, in an apparatus using a surface emitting laser, it is necessary to lay out multi-channel (CH) wiring. Therefore, when the configuration disclosed in
[0012]
In the method disclosed in Patent Document 2, the inductance of wiring and leads differs for each channel depending on the IC (integrated circuit) of the driver and the mounting form of the laser element. For this reason, when there are multiple channels such as a surface emitting laser, it is difficult to select and mount an optimum capacitor and resistor (CR) for each channel, and ringing occurs using an external snubber circuit. Therefore, it is practically impossible to adopt a method for improving the Cin characteristic.
[0013]
Furthermore, the method disclosed in Patent Document 3 does not require an external component such as a snubber circuit, but the overshoot amount is controlled by an unstable factor such as a base current. Therefore, it is difficult to perform high-precision correction inside the driver IC.
[0014]
Accordingly, the present invention provides a light emitting element driving device capable of stably obtaining ideal Cin characteristics without using a phenomenon that varies due to external factors such as ringing, and an image forming apparatus including the same. With the goal.
[0015]

Holding means for holding the drive voltage for the purpose, and with reference to the voltage corresponding to the target light quantity The integrated value of the light output from the light emitting element when the light emitting element is driven with the minimum pulse width is the light emission of the light output from the light emitting element when the drive current output from the current source converges To match the product of the value and the minimum pulse width, A correction means for correcting the drive voltage held by the holding means; do it Composed. [0017]
The minimum pulse width described in claim 2 is preferably set to be equal to or longer than the time from when the light emission signal is input until the drive current output from the current source converges. By setting the minimum pulse width longer than the time from the light emission signal input until the drive current converges, if the Cin characteristic at the minimum pulse width matches the ideal straight line, a laser with a pulse width greater than the minimum pulse width Even when light is output, the integrated light quantity exists on the ideal straight line, so that it is possible to obtain a desired ideal integrated light quantity for all the pulse widths to be used.

The driving voltage may be corrected by the above. The charge accumulated in the capacitor constituting the voltage source can be corrected with a simple configuration using a transistor.
[0021]

Further, even when a plurality of lasers are driven, the plurality of lasers can be corrected simultaneously.
[0022]
Further, the correction means according to
[0023]
Claims 6 The correcting means described includes, for example, a first transistor for flowing charge into the capacitor, and a second transistor for discharging charge accumulated in the capacitor. It may be constituted by. A circuit for realizing the correction to the plus side and the correction to the minus side can be easily configured by using a transistor for discharging the charge from the capacitor and a transistor for flowing the charge to the capacitor. Is possible.
[0024]

[0025]
According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided an image forming apparatus including a light emitting element driving device having a voltage source for voltage driving the light emitting element and a current source for current driving the light emitting element. The voltage source has holding means for holding a driving voltage for driving the light emitting element. The drive voltage held by the holding means is corrected so that the light emission amount during voltage driving is larger than the light emission amount during current driving. It has a correcting means and has a correcting means for correcting the drive voltage held by the holding means with reference to a voltage corresponding to the target light amount. By correcting the potential of the capacitor that holds the drive voltage accurately and stably with reference to the voltage corresponding to the target light quantity, it is ideal without using phenomena that vary due to external factors such as ringing. FIG. 3 shows a configuration example of a laser scanning system and output of each sensor in laser xerography, which is an aspect of an image forming apparatus including the light emitting element driving device of the present invention. The basic configuration of the laser beam scanning system in the laser xerography apparatus is as follows. The laser light emitted from the
[0038]
As described above, since the individual laser light amounts of the light emitting elements LD1 to LD32 are smaller than those of the end face laser, a plurality of them are turned on simultaneously to scan the SOS sensor. In this case, it is particularly preferable to turn on only a plurality of light emitting elements located in the central portion among the light emitting elements arranged two-dimensionally. However, in APC control, the light emitting elements are turned on one by one and the conditions are set (gain of feedback loop). Therefore, if a predetermined number of light emitting elements are turned on at the same time, the feedback loop of APC control will oscillate. There is a possibility that. With this configuration, in this embodiment, the Cin characteristic is adjusted so that the Cin characteristic approaches an ideal straight line (“Cin characteristic of correction amount A” in FIG. 5), or the contour of the image can be emphasized. Adjustment higher than the ideal straight line (“Cin characteristic of correction amount B” in FIG. 5) or the like can be freely performed. The ideal straight line is a straight line obtained when the pulse width of the light emission signal input and the integrated light quantity (integrated value of the laser light quantity) from the light emitting element LD have a proportional relationship passing through the origin.

Further, as shown in “Cin characteristic of correction amount A” in FIG. 5, by setting the correction amount (A) so that the integrated light quantity at the minimum pulse width matches the ideal straight line, the other pulse widths are set. Since the Cin characteristic overlaps the ideal straight line, it is not necessary to reset the correction amount. The main operations of the circuit configuration shown in FIG. 6A include an automatic light amount control (APC) operation and a modulation operation that repeatedly turns on and off with the light amount set by the automatic light amount control. The timing chart of FIG. 6B shows the switching (on / off) operation of the switches SW2, SW8, SW11, SW11-1, and SW16 in each operation.

During automatic light quantity control (see FIG. 6B), the switches SW11-1 and SW11 are turned on, and a drive current is supplied from the P-MOS transistor Tr1 constituting the

Next, in the modulation operation for performing the correction (see FIG. 6B), the switch SW16 is turned on, and the current adjusted by the reference offset generated based on the offset current setting signal that is an external input signal. The value I1 is output from the P-MOS transistor Tr3 and converted into a current voltage by the resistor R3. At this time, the terminal voltage on the resistor R3 side of the capacitor C2 is compared with the voltage value in the case where the switch SW16 is in the off state and in the grounded state, that is, the voltage value in the case of automatic light quantity control in which the current value is 0. Then, it is raised by a voltage value corresponding to I1 × R3. Thus, when the voltage value on the switch SW8 side in the capacitor C2, that is, the drive voltage output from the

In FIGS. 7 and 9, when the region above the threshold current at which the light emitting element LD starts to emit light is divided into four regions a, b, c and d as shown in the figure, the drive current waveform is an ideal rectangular wave. In this case, the ideal integrated light quantity is represented by (a + c), and the integrated light quantity taking into account the delay (waveform rounding) at the actual rise and fall is represented by (b + c + d). Therefore, when correcting so that the Cin characteristic approaches an ideal straight line (FIG. 7), the correction amount (A) is adjusted so that the time until the drive current converges is set to the minimum pulse width and a = b + d is established. (Corresponding to FIG. 7B). As a result, it is possible to make the Cin characteristic in an area equal to or larger than the minimum pulse width match or be close to an ideal straight line. Further, by determining the correction amount A based on the integrated light quantity at the minimum pulse width in this way, the correction amount can be suppressed to the minimum, and as a result, deterioration in image quality due to correction can be suppressed. Further, when the Cin characteristic is corrected to be higher than the ideal straight line in order to enhance the contour of the image (FIG. 9), the time until the drive current converges is set to the minimum pulse width, and a <b + d at the minimum pulse width. The correction amount (B) is adjusted so as to be (corresponding to FIG. 8B). That is, a correction amount that satisfies B> A is used. As a result, it is possible to make the Cin characteristic in an area greater than the minimum pulse width larger than the ideal straight line, and it is possible to enhance the contour of the image by driving based on this.
[0067]
As apparent from FIG. 8, in the case of no correction amount, a> d in any of the cases (a) to (c) regardless of the magnitude of the light emission waveform from the light emitting element LD. The Cin characteristic always passes below the ideal straight line. As a result, when there is no correction amount, the contour of the output image becomes thin and the image becomes blurred.
[0068]
In addition, the effect of correction when the amount of laser light output from the light emitting element LD is increased (hereinafter referred to as high light amount) and when it is decreased (hereinafter referred to as low light amount) will be described with reference to FIG.
[0069]
FIG. 10A is a diagram showing a drive current waveform with a small amount of light. FIG. 10B is a diagram showing a drive current waveform with a large amount of light. In FIG. 10, the same correction amount A is used for a small light amount and a large light amount. The correction amount A is a value set so that the Cin characteristic coincides with an ideal straight line when the amount of light is small (however, a region longer than the time until the drive current converges), that is, a = b + d. It is a set value.
[0070]
First, attention is focused on the rising portion of the drive current waveform in FIGS. 10 (a) and 10 (b). The rise time constant is a constant determined by the resistance of the wiring, the on-resistance of the switch, the parasitic capacitance of the wiring, etc., and is constant regardless of the amount of light. Since the time constant is the same, as apparent from FIG. 10, the drive current waveform exceeds the light emission threshold first when the light amount is large. Therefore, the ratio of the deviation of the Cin characteristic from the ideal straight line due to the rising round is (a ′ / (a ′ + c ′) <(a / (a + c)) when the light amount is large and the light amount is small. On the other hand, at the time of falling, on the other hand, since the driving current waveform with a small amount of light first exceeds the light emission threshold, (d ′ / (a ′ + c ′))> (d / (a + c)). .
[0071]
Therefore, from the viewpoint of the integrated light quantity, the Cin characteristic is increased (moved upward) as the laser light quantity is increased at both the rise time and the fall time.
[0072]
Further, if the time constants of rising and falling are the same, a ′> d ′ is satisfied, so ((ad)) / (a + c))> ((a′−d ′) / (a '+ C'))> 0, and it can be seen that increasing the laser light quantity reduces the effect of rise / fall round. Further, since the correction amount A does not change depending on the light amount and is constant, the increments b ′ and b of the integrated light amount are substantially equal.
[0073]
From the above, the correction effect for all the integrated light amounts becomes (b ′ / (a ′ + b ′ + c ′)) <(b / (a + b + c)), and the correction effect becomes relatively small as the light amount increases. I understand that
[0074]
As described above, the integrated light amount increases as the light amount increases and approaches the ideal value. On the other hand, the effect of correction decreases as the light amount increases. Therefore, in this embodiment, the correction amount is set so that the integrated light amount becomes an ideal value with the minimum light amount. Thereby, even when the amount of light increases, the Cin characteristic can be set to be substantially equal to the ideal straight line.
[0075]
As described above, according to this embodiment, the voltage value of the voltage drive can be stably and accurately adjusted by a signal (reference offset) input from the outside, and thus the light emitting element LD overshoot amount can be accurately set. It becomes possible to control and to obtain a desired Cin characteristic stably without using a phenomenon that varies due to external factors such as ringing. As a result, it is possible to output an image with good image quality.

FIG. 11 shows the flow of current when correction is performed on the plus side (that is, when current flows out through the switch SW16). When correcting to the plus side in this way, the reference offset is set to be larger than AVDD / 2. As described above, according to the present embodiment, the voltage value of voltage drive can be stably and accurately adjusted by a signal (reference offset) input from the outside, as in the first embodiment. The amount of overshoot of the light emitting element LD can be accurately controlled, and a desired Cin characteristic can be stably obtained without using a phenomenon that varies due to external factors such as ringing. As a result, it is possible to output an image with good image quality. Furthermore, in the present embodiment, the correction range can be set to both the plus side and the minus side, so that correction can be performed with more flexibility. Since other configurations are the same as those of the first embodiment, description thereof is omitted here.
