Description
図5A及び図5Bは、図3の従来の液晶表示装置の輝度分布を示した概略的な図である。従来では、通常、バックライトユニットへ入射される光の輝度分布を円形または楕円形を有するように構成するために、前述したような第1光Aのように、前記第1偏光板23及び第2偏光板25の吸収軸方向に平行でない光が複数出射され液晶表示装置へ入射されると、このような光は、ブラック輝度を増加させることによって、結局、液晶表示装置のコントラスト比が低下する問題がある。
また、本発明は、液晶パネルを通る光の輝度分布が理想的な状態を示すようにする液晶表示装置を提案する。
図6は、本発明の一実施の形態によるバックライトユニット50の斜視図である。
また、図7は、一実施の形態によるバックライトユニット50を含む液晶表示装置100の平面図である。図示される液晶表示装置は、1つ以上のバックライトランプ52と、複数の光学シート54、56、58とを備えて、第1基板上に位置して第1偏光軸を有する第1偏光板72と、第1基板に対向する第2基板の下部に位置して第1偏光軸と交差する第2偏光軸を有する第2偏光板74と、第1と第2の基板間に介された液晶層とを備えた液晶パネル60側に、光を照射する直下型(direct type)バックライト構造の液晶表示装置100を示している。
これは、液晶パネルへ照射される光の分布を、第1偏光板72と第2偏光板74の吸収軸と平行な方向に進行して入射される第2光Bをさらに増加させ、光吸収軸の方向と平行しない方向に進行する第1光Aの量を減少させて、ブラック輝度を減少させると共に、パネルの高いコントラスト比を維持するものである。
図9は、前記マイクロレンズシート54上に、複数形成された凸レンズ54aの望ましい配列形態を示した平面図であって、偏光板の吸収軸の方向に、進行面を有して入射される光の凝集のために、第1偏光板72と第2偏光板74の吸収軸の方向に、凸レンズ54aが十字型で構成された構造示している。また、ランプの配列方向を考慮して、ランプ52の長手方向に平行に延長される凸レンズ54aをさらに長く形成することは言うまでもない。
Claims (8)
- 第1基板と、前記第1基板と対向する第2基板と、前記第1基板と第2基板との間に介される液晶層を含む液晶パネルと、
前記第1基板上に位置して、第1偏光軸を有する第1偏光板と、
前記第2基板の下部に位置して、第1偏光軸と交差する第2偏光軸を有する第2偏光板と、
前記第2偏光板の下部に位置して、少なくとも1つのランプと、マイクロレンズシートを有するバックライトユニットと
を含み、
前記マイクロレンズシートは、複数の凸レンズを含み、前記複数の凸レンズは、それぞれ十字型であり、前記十字型の第1軸と第2軸は、前記第1及び第2偏光板の光吸収軸と平行した方向の光を増加させると共に前記第1及び第2偏光板の光吸収軸と平行しない方向の光を減少させる方向に配列させる
ことを特徴とする液晶表示装置。 - 前記凸レンズは、ブラック状態での輝度を減少させるために、前記第1偏光板と第2偏光板の吸収軸に対応するバックライトユニットからの光の輝度を増加させることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記バックライトユニットは、直下型であることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記マイクロレンズシートは、前記第1偏光板と、他の光学シートとの間に位置することを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記マイクロレンズシートは、透明な物質で形成されることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記透明な物質は、合成樹脂であることを特徴とする請求項5に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記十字型の第2軸は、前記第1軸よりも短く、前記第1軸は、前記少なくとも1つのランプの長手方向に対応することを特徴とする請求項1または2に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記凸レンズは、第1半円柱型レンズと、前記第1半円柱型レンズと交差する第2半円柱型レンズとを含むことを特徴とする請求項1または2に記載の液晶表示装置。
