Description
液晶材料としては、ネマティック(nematic)、コレステリック(cholestric)、スメクティック(smectic)の三つのタイプが知られており、それぞれ分子の配列が異なる。
本発明は、ネマティックまたはピッチの長いコレステリックの材料を用いたデバイス、およびセル壁への表面配向処理に関する。この表面配向は、壁と接触している液晶分子を配向方向に配向するものである。こういった配向の方向を直交するように決めることによって、液晶はその電圧OFF状態に置いてねじれ構造をとらざるを得なくなる。このデバイスは、ツイステッドネマティック(twisted nematic)デバイスとして知られている。ネマティックの材料にコレステリックの材料を少量加えることにより、好適なねじれ方向を与えることができ、デバイス内のねじれが確実に均一となる。また、例えばスーパーツイステッドネマティックデバイスや、米国特許US−4,596,446号に記述される270°のツイステッドネマティックデバイスのように、ねじれの角度を90°より大きくしてデバイスを作ることもできる。配向処理の別の要件は、セル壁における液晶分子に対しても表面のチルト(tilt)を与えるべきである、ということである。かかる表面のチルトは、例えば英国特許GB−1,472,247号および同1,478,592号に説明されるように、デバイスによっては、表示を確実に均一にするために必要である。
多数のアドレス可能な素子で表示を行うために、電極を、一方の壁上の一連の行電極および他方のセル壁上の一連の列電極として作ることが普通である。こういった形式、例えばアドレス可能な素子または画素のx−yマトリクスは、普通rmsアドレス法を用いてアドレスされる。材料およびデバイスのパラメータのために、多重アドレスできる画素の数には上限がある。画素数を多くする方法の一つは、それぞれの画素に隣接して薄膜トランジスタを組み込むことである。かかる表示装置は、アクティブマトリクス表示装置と呼ばれる。
配向を行う方法の一つは、ラビング(rubbing)工程と呼ばれ、ポリマー層を有するまたは有しないセル壁が柔らかい布によって一方向にラビングされる。液晶分子は、ポリマー層によって決まるが通常約2°またはそれ以上の表面チルトで、ラビング方向に沿って配向する。このラビング工程の欠点は、表示装置の歩留まりを低下させたりセル壁上に既に形成されている薄膜トランジスタに静電的および機械的損傷を与える粉塵を発生する可能性がある、ということである。
他の配向技術として、例えばSiOの、斜方蒸着(oblique evaporation)がある。これは、蒸着方向の角度によって決まるが表面のチルトをゼロ、または例えば30°といった高いチルトにすることができる。かかる技術は、大量生産では扱いにくい。しかしそれよりも重要な問題は、広い面積のセル壁にわたって配向方向および表面のチルトを均一にすることが困難である、ということである。
こういった理由により、非ラビングの配向技術を開発することが非常に望ましい。かかる配向には、ラングミュアブロジェット(Langmuir Bloggett)技術の使用(H.Ikeno他、Japan J Appl Phys、第27巻495ページ、1988年)、基板に磁界をかけること(N.KoshhidaおよびS.Kikui、Appl Phys Lett、第40巻541ページ、1982年)、または機械的延伸(drawing)により誘導された光学的異方性を有するポリマー膜の使用(H.Aoyama他、Mol Cryst Liq Cryst、第72巻、127ページ、1981年)、または偏光の照射(M.Schadt他、Japan J Appl Phys、第31巻2155ページ、1992年)、が含まれている。また、一つの表面のみがラビングされるツイステッドネマティック構造も作られている(Y.Toko他、Japan Display 92 491)。
サーモクロミックの(thermochromic)表示装置を形成するピッチの短いコレステリックの材料は、プラスチックのセル壁内にエンボス(emboss)加工されたグレーティング(grating)構造によって配向している。これは、英国特許GB−2,143,323号(McDonnell、1983年)に説明されている。以前の、ブレチルト(pretilt)した配向を得るためのグレーティングの使用は、正弦波(sinusoidal)グレーティングと交わるブレーズ(blazed)グレーティングを利用してきた(E.S.Lee他、SID 93 Digest、957)。そして液晶のディレクタ(director)は正弦波グレーティングの溝に沿って走り、それゆえブレーズグレーティングを横切って走り、プレチルトを引き起こす。
本発明によれば、ツイステッドネマティックのタイプのデバイス、例えばねじれが45°、90°、180°、270°、360°、またはそれ以上、またはこれらの中間の角度であるデバイス、の配向の方向と表面のチルトの両方が、単一のブレーズによって与えられる。
本発明によれば、ツイステッドネマティックデバイスは、
液晶材料の層を封入する二つのセル壁と、
両方の壁上の電極構造と、
液晶分子に配向の方向と表面のチルトの両方を与える、両方の壁上の表面の配向と
を含み、セル壁は、配向の方向が互いにゼロでない角度をなすように配置されており、
表面整合方向をもたらすための、非対称プロファイルを有する溝を有している、少なくとも一つのセル壁上のグレーティングと、
セル壁における表面整合方向間の角度に等しくないねじれ角をもたらし、これによって液晶材料の弾性ねじれ定数と組み合わされたグレーティング整合が、液晶材料に対して整合および非ゼロ表面チルトの両方をもたらすコレステリックピッチおよび厚さを液晶材料層が有していることを特徴とする。
非対称の配向は、ほぼのこぎり波の断面形状を有してもよい。
非対称の配向の表面は、以下の式を満たすhの値がいかなる値のxについても存在しないような表面として規定してもよい。

ただしYは表面の振幅(amplitude)を表す関数である。
非対称構造は、セル壁の全体または一部、またはそれぞれの画素の全体または一部を覆ってもよい。さらに、配向の方向は、一つの画素の異なる領域においてまたは隣接する画素上で異なってもよい。
セルは、両方とも液晶材料内に少量の多色性の材料(pleochroic)(例えばD82、メルク)を含むまたは含まない、二つの色のついたまたは中立の偏光板の間に配置してもよい。偏光板の偏光軸、層の厚さ、および材料の複屈折は、ON状態とOFF状態の間の表示コントラストを最適化するように決めてよい。例えば、偏光板の光軸(optical axis)は、隣接する配向の方向に対して平行または直角の角度から数度までずれてもよく、デバイスはグーチとタリーの最小値(Gooch and Tarry minimum)において動作されてもよい(J Phys D Appl Phys、第8巻、1975年、1575−1584ページ)。
セル壁の一方または両方は、ガラス等の比較的厚い柔軟性を有しない材料で形成してもよく、または、セル壁の一方または両方は、ガラスの薄い層または例えばポリプロピレン等のプラスチック材料等の、柔軟性を有する材料で形成してもよい。プラスチックのセル壁は、その内面上にエンボス加工を施してグレーティングを設けてもよい。さらに、エンボス加工によって、セル壁とセル壁の間隔(spacing apart)の補正を助け、セルが曲がったときに液晶材料流動の障壁ともなる小さなピラー(pillars)(例えば、高さが1〜3μm、幅が5〜50μmまたはそれ以上)を設けてもよい。または、ピラーを、配向層の材料によってを形成してもよい。

第1図および第2図に示す表示装置は、ガラスの壁3、4の間に含まれるコレステリックの液晶材料の層2によって形成される液晶セル1を含む。スペーサリング5によって、両方の壁は通常6μm離れた状態で維持される。さらに、壁の間隔を正確に維持するために、多数の、6μmという小さな直径のガラス繊維を液晶材料中に分散してもよい。例えばSnO2やITOの、ストップ状(strip like)の行電極6が一方の壁3上に形成され、同様の列電極7が他方の壁4上に形成される。m行n列の電極であれば、m−nマトリクスのアドレス可能な素子または画素を形成する。それぞれの画素は、行と列の電極の交差によって形成される。
行ドライバ8は、それぞれの行電極6に電圧を供給する。同様に、列ドライバ9は、それぞれの列電極7に電圧を供給する。印加される電圧は、電圧源11からの電力およびクロック12からのタイミングを受け取る制御ロジック10から制御される。
後述するように、セル1のどちらの側にも、偏光軸が互いに関して交わり隣接する壁3、4上の配向の方向に平行になるように配置した偏光板13、13’がある。
部分的に反射する鏡16を、光源15と共にセル1の後方に配置してもよい。こういったものを配置することにより、表示装置が反射して周囲の照明が弱くても後方から照らされて見ることができる。透過型デバイスでは、鏡を省略してもよい。
第3図は、直交して配向した溝23、24を有する二つのグレーティング21、22の間のネマティックの液晶層20よりなる構造を示す。液晶分子の局部的な方向(ディレクタ)を25で示す。溝が非常に深いグレーティング(すなわち、高いアズマスアンカリングエネルギー(azimuthal anchoring energy))の場合は、それぞれの表面における液晶ディレクタ25は溝の方向に沿う。しかし、それよりも浅い(またはピッチの長い)グレーティングの場合は、第3図に示す比較的大きなバルクねじれエネルギーのために、表面におけるディレクタ25は溝の方向23、24から(Φ1およびΦ2だけ)それてねじれる(twisted off)。溝がブレーズしている(非対称である)場合には、このそれてねじれることに伴い、表面がプレチルトする。このプレチルトは、逆チルトディスクリネーション(disclination)を防止するために、実用の表示装置には不可欠である。この背景で、ブレーズしている表面は式(1)の表面として上に規定される。
グレーティング21、22は、セル壁の表面全体を覆ってもよく、それぞれの画素のすべてまたは一部を覆ってもよく、画素の境界をわずかに超えて延びていてもよい。グレーティングは、画素間の領域を表面にグレーティングを含まないポリマーでコーティングしたグレーティング材料の完全な層の画素領域にあってもよい。または、画素におけるグレーティングは、画素間にグレーティングポリマーがないグレーティングの別個の領域であってもよい。グレーティングのない画素間の領域を用いて、表示装置のON状態とOFF状態の間のコントラスト比を改善してもよい。というのも、こういったグレーティングのない領域は、ノーマリーホワイト(normally white)のツイステッドネマティック表示装置においては黒に見えるからである。これにより、現在の表示装置では形成されていることもある、電極間のセル壁に黒色のパターンを、施す必要がなくなる。
それぞれの画素における溝の方向は、画素の異なる部分において、または隣接する画素、例えば溝が互いに直交する二つの半画素の間で異なっていてもよい。さらに、溝の非対称およびまたは溝の深さは、一つの画素領域内で変えて(それゆえ表面のプレチルトおよびねじれが変わる)、特にSTNデバイス(ねじれ角度が180から360の間、例えば270°)についてさらにグレースケールの表示能力を上げてもよい。このサブ画素化(sub-pixellation)を用いて、表示装置の視角を向上させてもよい。
頂点(zenithal)のアンカリングエネルギーは、グレーティング材料またはその処理を変えることによって、およびまたはグレーティング表面上に界面活性剤(例えばレシチン(lethecin))を用いることによって、別個に制御してもよい。
第4図は、グレーティングを作製する装置を示す。図示のように、アルゴンイオンレーザ31(波長457.9nm)からの光30が、第1のレンズ32によって固定ディフューザ(diffuser)33および回転ディフューザ34上に集光される。第2のレンズ35が今では拡大された(expan ded)レーザビーム30を再び平行にし、レーザビーム30はその後、半アルミニウム処理を施した(semi aluminised)ビームスプリッタ36によって、二つの鏡37、38の上に振幅を分割される(ampli tude split)。二つの鏡37、38の間に配置されたサンプルホルダには40内には、グレーティングに形成されるべき基板39が搭載されている。二つの鏡37、38の中間の、伝播の向きが反対のビームによって、周期がレーザの波長の半分である光学的定在波(standing wave)、すなわち干渉縞が設定される。
インジウムスズ酸化物(indium tin oxide)(ITO)でコーティングされたガラスの基板39は、サンプルホルダ40内に搭載される前にアセトンおよびイソプロパノールで洗浄され、その後フォトポリイミド(チバガイギー 343)を4000rpmで30秒間スピンコートされ、厚さ3.5μmのコーティング41がなされる。ソフトベーキング(Softbaking)が80℃で15分間行われ、その後さらに、100℃で15分間行われる。基板39はその後、第4図のようにサンプルホルダ40内に搭載され、アルゴンイオンレーザ31からの光の定在波パターンに、斜めの角度で露光される。これは、M.C.Hutley、Diffraction Gratings(Academic Press、ロンドン、1982年)95−125ページのインターフェログラフィック(interferographic)グレーティング製造の具体的な例である。
干渉縞は、第5図に示すように、フォトポリマー層41内に記録される。グレーティングのピッチは、基板39と定在波のなす角度によって決まる。通常、露光はサンプルにおけるパワー密度(power density)が1.5mW/cm2で300秒間である。露光後ベーキング(post e xposure bake)(105℃、5分間)の後、サンプルはQZ3301(Ciba Geigy)で15秒間でスピン現像が行われ、その後QS3312で15秒間すすぎが行われる。
上記工程は、M.C.Hutley、Diffraction Gratings(Academic Press、ロンドン、1982年、95−125ページ)に説明されているインターフェログラフィックグレーティング製造の具体的な例である。グレーティングは、CANONの英国特許GB−2166562−A号、FUNADAの米国特許US−4521080号、およびFUNADAの米国特許US−4232947号においても説明されている。
例1
二つのグレーティングが、第4図、第5図を参照して説明した方法で作られ、溝の方向が直交するように配置された。スペーサによって、両方のグレーティングは10μm離れた状態で保持されている。結果として得られた厚さ10μmのセルには、市販の液晶混合物E7(メルク)が充填された。グレーティングのアズマスアンカリングが弱いために、ネマティックはΦ1=Φ2=45°を満たすように配向するとわかった(第3図参照)。G.Baur他、Phys Lett、第56a巻、142ページ(1976年)に説明されている結晶回転(crystal rotation)法によって、それぞれの表面において1.2°のプレチルトが測定された。続いて表面の一つを原子力顕微鏡(AFM)で調べると、プロファイルがゆがんだ正弦曲線であり、それぞれの溝の一方の側の最大面が9.1°であり他方の側が7.5°であることが示された。それゆえ、ディレクタが溝に対してゼロでない角をなす限りにおいて、非対称単グレーティング(monograting)はネマティック内にプレチルトを誘導する、ということが示されている。
また、第6図を参照した簡単な理論的推論(argument)によって、ブレーズグレーティングがプレチルトを誘導する、ということを示すこともできる。
表面アンカリングエネルギーが最小となるように(すなわちバルクエネルギーを無視)表面に対してある角度Opをなすブレーズグレーティングの上の均一なディレクタの場を仮定しよう。
図示のように、面の角度がθaおよびθb、振幅x、ピッチ2L、分子の表面チルトθpで表面を規定しよう。表面アンカリングエネルギーは、次式によって与えられる。
θpについて最小にすると、次式が与えられる。
θb=π/2、すなわち面の一つを垂直にする。すると、上の解は次式のようになる。
この方程式を第7図に曲線で示す。プレチルトはθaにだいたい一次的に従属し、常にθaよりも大きいことが示されている。従って、この簡単な理論は、プロファイルが非対称な溝によってゼロでないプレチルトが誘導される、ということを立証した。
実験例において、液晶はグレーティングの溝に対して約45°のほぼ均一な状態を形成した。完全に90°ねじれた構造を得るために、液晶は(逆ねじれを防止するために)カイラル(chiral)な添加剤を添加され、溝は互いに90°よりも大きなまたは小さな角をなすように配置される。カイラル剤の添加を行って、溝の非対称(そしてそれゆえプレチルト)は増大することができ、STN(270°ねじれた)構造を作ることができる。実験例におけるグレーティングのピッチは1.6μmであったが、広範囲のピッチを用いることができる。
第4図のように配置すると、0.23μm(レーザの波長の半分)よりも大きいものであればいかなる大きさのピッチのグレーティングも作ることができるが、より小さいピッチは紫外線レーザで作ることができる。正弦波グレーティングの単位面積あたりのアズマス配向エネルギーは、U=2π3K11(a2/L3)と計算されている(D.W.Berreman、Phys Rev Lett、28、1683(1972年))、ただしaはグレーティングの振幅(溝の山から谷までの深さの半分)であり、Lはピッチである。液晶の配向の点からは、有用なグレーティングは、Uが熱ランダム化エネルギー(thermal ramdomisation energy)よりも大きくいかなる他の表面凹凸または材料の不均質と関連するエネルギーよりも大きいようなプロファイルを有しなければならない。さらに、十分なエネルギーを得るためにはピッチを小さくすることが好ましい、というのも、aが大きすぎる場合、電圧がセルに加えられるときにグレーティングを横切って起こる電圧降下が大きくなるからである。
こういった構成に適したグレーティングは、また、キャリア層移動、フォトリソグラフィー(F.Horn、Physics World 33(1993年3月))、エンボス加工(M.T.Gale他、J Appl Photo Eng、第4巻2−41ページ(1978年))、または刻線加工(ruling)(E.G.LoewenおよびR.S.Wiley、Proc SPIE、第815巻88ページ(1987年))を用いても組み立てることができる。
Claims (21)
- 液晶材料の層(2)を封入する二つのセル壁(3、4)と、
両方の壁(3、4)上の電極構造(6、7)と、
液晶分子に表面配向の方向と表面チルトの両方を与える、両方のセル壁上の表面配向とを含み、セル壁(3、4)は、表面配向の方向が互いにゼロでない角度をなすように配置されている、ツイステッドネマティックデバイスであって、
非対称プロファイル(θa、θb)を有する溝(23、24)を有している、表面配向の方向をもたらすための少なくとも一つのセル壁(3、4)上のグレーティング(21、22)を含み、
液晶材料層が、コレステリックピッチ(p)および厚さ(d)を有し、該コレステリックピッチ(p)および厚さ(d)が、セル壁(3、4)における表面配向の方向間の角度(Φ)に等しくないねじれ角(Φ≠2πd/p)をもたらし、これによって液晶材料(2、20)の弾性ねじれ定数と組み合わされたグレーティングの配向(23、24)が、液晶材料(2、20)に対して配向および非ゼロ表面チルト(θp、θp≠0)の両方をもたらすことを特徴とするツイステッドネマティックデバイス。 - 液晶が、配向の方向と配向の方向の間の角度より小さい角度ねじれるように、コレステリックのピッチおよび非対称溝構造の配向の方向が決められている請求項1に記載のデバイス。
