BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a configuration of a reflective liquid crystal display device that realizes bright display without using a backlight.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Conventionally, a reflective liquid crystal display device has a structure described in, for example, Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 10-177106. A plan view of a conventional reflective liquid crystal display device is shown in FIG. 17, and a manufacturing process procedure is shown in FIG. FIG. 17 shows an example of a conventional structure. The shape of the bottom surface of the unevenness formed on the surface of the reflective electrode is a semicircle. Further, when the cross section is viewed in a direction perpendicular to the straight part of the semicircle, the shape is asymmetric in the left-right direction. Such irregularities
By forming 102, light can be strongly reflected in a specific direction. The
(1) An organic film is applied on the substrate, and the bottom shape becomes semicircular by the exposure and development processes.
Then, patterning is performed (FIGS. 18A to 18C).
[0003]
(2) The substrate should be placed so that the semicircular straight line portion faces upward during the heat treatment after pattern formation.
And heat treatment is performed (FIGS. 18D to 18E).
[0004]
(3) After heat treatment, a metal film to be a reflective electrode is formed by vapor deposition, sputtering, etc.
(FIG. 18 (f)).
[0005]
It is formed through the process. The
[0006]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
In the conventional method, the direction of the
[0007]
When the reflective liquid crystal display device is small, a bright display device can be realized by forming irregularities in the same direction on all the reflective electrodes included in the reflective liquid crystal display device. When the observer increases in size, when the observer looks at the display device, the viewing direction and the angle formed by the reflective electrode are greatly different at the left end, the right end, and the central portion of the device, so that the display has different brightness. Therefore, there is a need to provide a reflective liquid crystal display device with little variation in brightness within the screen when viewed by an observer even when the reflective liquid crystal display device is enlarged.
[0008]
An object of the present invention is to provide a reflective liquid crystal display device with little variation in brightness within a screen even when the reflective liquid crystal display device is enlarged.
[0009]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
The problem can be solved by using the following method.
[0010]
This can be realized by changing the scattering characteristics in the respective reflecting electrodes and directing the brighter direction with respect to the viewing position. Here, the scattering characteristic is a change in scattered light intensity with respect to a certain scattered light emission angle, and includes enhancing reflected light in a specific direction as shown in the prior art. The bottom shape of the irregularities formed on the surface of the reflective electrode is a semicircular shape similar to the conventional example. In order to direct the brighter direction to the observer, it is possible to change the direction of the unevenness for each reflective electrode. The visual recognition position of the reflective liquid crystal display device is defined, and the unevenness formed on the reflective electrode surface is rotated according to the angle between the visual recognition position and the reflective electrode included in the reflective liquid crystal display device. Specifically, the line symmetry axis of the unevenness is oriented in substantially the same direction as the viewing position and the azimuth angle formed by the reflective electrode. By doing so, the direction in which light is strongly returned by all the reflective electrodes can be directed to the visual recognition position. As a result, it is possible to realize a reflective liquid crystal display device that is bright and has little in-plane brightness variation.

For all the examples shown above, the unevenness and the reflective electrode are not formed on the switching element. However, by forming the unevenness on the switching element and forming the reflective electrode thereon, the aperture ratio is increased. Thus, a brighter reflective liquid crystal display device can be realized.
