発明の分野
本発明は、電子テレビプログラムガイド（ＥＰＧ）に関する。特に、ユーザーの使用環境にとって無用なスケジュール情報を選択的に削除して全国規模のＥＰＧスケジュールを「地方化」するためのシステムおよび方法に関する。

発明の背景
テレビ視聴者に便利な形態でスクリーン表示式のプログラム・スケジュール情報を提供するＥＰＧシステムは周知である。いわゆるインタラクティブＥＰＧは、ユーザーが、スケジュール情報を任意の順序で拾い読みし、現在またはそれ以降の視聴のためにプログラムをオンスクリーン・メニューから選択し、ペイパービューのプログラムの指定を行い、更に必要に応じて他の有用な操作を行えるように、制御できるようになっている。先進的なＥＰＧの例は、ベニントンら(Bennington, et al)による「電子テレビプログラムガイド用スケジュール・システムおよび方法（“Electronic Television Program Guide Schedule System and Method”）」（以下、「ベニントン」とする）という題目の共願出願Ｎｏ. ０８／１１９３６７の中に記載されている。これは参照により当出願に組入れる。

殆どのＥＰＧは、以下の基本的態様で動作する。すなわち、プログラム・スケジュール情報、また時にはアプリケーション・システム・ソフトウエアは、視聴者の施設に配置されている装置（通常は「セットトップボックス」）に向けて、放送、ケーブル、直接衛星放送、または他の適切な形式の送信方法によって、送信される。セットトップボックスにはメモリがあり、プログラム・スケジュール情報がその後の視聴のために保持される。セットトップボックスに記憶されたプログラム・スケジュール情報は、周期的に（すなわち、連続的、日ごと、１週ごと、或いは２週ごとに）更新される。セットトップボックスの中のプログラム化されたマイクロコントローラは、視聴者のテレビ受信機と協同して、記憶されたプログラム・スケジュール情報を表示し、ユーザーが発する信号に応えてＥＰＧの他の機能を実行する。入手可能な機能は、特定のＥＰＧの洗練の度合いに依存している。

現在、視聴者に入手可能なテレビ・プログラムは、視聴者の区域のサービス提供業者に依存している。例えばアメリカ合衆国においては、ケーブル運用業者は通常、地方政府から事業免許を与えられて特定の地域に対するケーブル運用サービスを提供している。これは一般的に、プログラム・スケジュールが地域によって変わることを意味する。

全国規模のプログラムガイド（例えば「ＴＶガイド［TV GUIDE］」のような）を発行する者にとっては、様々な地理的区域で加入している総てのサービス提供業者に、全国規模のプログラム・スケジュールを単一の形で送信ができることが便利であろう。全国規模プログラム・スケジュールを単一の形で送信することによって、ＥＰＧ発行者は、スケジュール情報を行き先ごとに多重送信しなければならないような事態になったとしたら生じる、発送の費用と複雑な手間を避けられるだろう。同時に、全国規模のプログラム・スケジュール供給を、サービス提供業者の発信機器を複雑にしたり費用を増やしたりせずに、各地域ごとに調整して「地方化」することも望ましいであろう。

発明の要約
その他のものも含めてこれらの目的は、本発明のＥＰＧプログラム・スケジュール地方化システムおよび方法で達成される。このシステムおよび方法では、各視聴者のセットトップボックスの中で実行されるスケジュール情報フィルタによって、全国規模のプログラム・スケジュール供給が「地方化」される。この地方化フィルタによって、どのスケジュール情報が視聴者のサービス環境にとって適切であるかが自動的に判別され、この判別に従ってその情報が記憶されるかまたは排除される。その成果として、プログラム・スケジュール供給送信側で高価な機器を用いることなく、視聴者の特定なサービス環境に合わせて調整される電子プログラム・スケジュールが生じる。しかも、多重地域に奉仕するためにプログラム・スケジュール・データの１つのコピーしか必要としないので、送られるべきデータの総量が最少化され、これにより費用が更に低減する。本発明でプログラム・スケジュール供給が単一であることは、送信時間を低減することで更なる利点である。送信時間の低減は、スケジュール・データがより迅速に加入者に届くことを意味する。本発明の他の実施例においては、地方化フィルタの一部は加入者のヘッドエンドで行われるので、加入者のセットトップボックスをヘッドエンドに接続する媒体の送信帯域幅は自由になる。

望ましい実施例の詳細な説明
本発明のシステムおよび方法は、プログラム・スケジュール情報を記憶するための記憶装置と、メモリ管理ソフトウエアプログラムを本発明の種々のメモリ管理機能に従って実行するためのプログラム化された処理装置と、現在の日付と時刻のトラックを維持するためのクロックとを有する任意の適切なＥＰＧプラットフォーム上で実行することができる。本発明のプログラムは、別の記憶装置の中、またはスケジュール情報のために用いられるのと同じ記憶装置の別の部分に記憶することができる。本発明の情報フィルタ手順を遂行するプログラムの符号化は、通常の技能を有するプログラマには明白なことである。

本発明を実行するための適切なプラットフォームは、上述のベニントンのＥＰＧである。ベニントンの図１を参照すると、本発明のプログラムは、不揮発性メモリＥＥＰＲＯＭ２０に負荷、記憶される。このプラットフォームのスケジュール情報は、ＤＲＡＭ１８に構築されるデータベースに記憶される。ベニントンで説明されているように、プログラム・スケジュール情報を送り出し、受け取るのに、特別な送信プロトコルは必要ない。プログラム・スケジュール・データベースの構築と組織化は、通常の技能を有する者には理解されるように、ルーチンタスクである。

本発明のプログラムを実行するための適切な処理装置がマイクロコントローラ１６によって提供され、現在の日付と時刻が（スケジュール記録に対して比較するために）クロック１９によって追随される。その他の適切なハードウェア構成は、本発明に関連する技術に通じる当業者には容易に想定されることであろう。本発明はＥＰＧの表示手段の詳細を示すことを目的としていないので、本発明への混乱を避けるために、かかる要素の動作については論じないことにする。

図１は、ケーブル・システムおよび全国規模のプログラム・スケジュール供給を例として用いた、本発明の概要を示す。しかし、本発明は、以下で容易に明白になるように、如何なる送信形態であっても使用できる。本発明は、特定の形態の送信に向けられているものでもなく、また特定の範囲のプログラム・スケジュール供給に向けられているものでもない。図１を参照すると、全国規模の電子プログラム・スケジュール供給１０は、適切な送信装置（例えば、サテライト）で視聴者のケーブル・ヘッドエンド・アンテナ２０に送信される。この全国規模の電子プログラム・スケジュール供給１０によって、地域のＣＡＴＶ配給ネットワークが駆動される。この同一の全国規模の電子プログラム・スケジュール供給１０は、ＥＰＧ発行者が総てのサービス提供業者に対してスケジュールの受信と配給のための適切な手配を施して、送出される。ＥＰＧスケジュール発行者が奉仕する地理的条件は、全国規模のプログラム・スケジュール供給を受容するサービス提供業者の到達範囲によってのみ局限される。本発明の好ましい実施例の或るものにおいては、完全な新しいスケジュールが加入者に向けて、日ごと、１週ごと、或いはその他の周期で送出される。その他の好ましい実施例においては、システムは、ＥＰＧの更新以前にも、完全な新しいスケジュールが送出されるべく準備されるまで待ってはいない。その代わりに、プログラム・スケジュールに対する小刻みな更新が連続的に加入者に送出される。この「周期的」動作モードでは、スケジュールの総てのデータが送出され終わると、即座にスケジュール・データ更新の送信が始まる。継続的送信の各々には、ＥＰＧに既に記憶されているスケジュール情報の更新と共に、範囲が含む時間期間の最後に関する新しいデータも含まれる。前回の送信以降無効になったスケジュール・データは一切送出されない。

ヘッドエンドに配置されている信号処理機器３０によって、最終ユーザーへ配給ハブ４０を経由して配給するための受信信号の条件が整えられる。ここで、電子プログラム・スケジュールの濾波が行われていないこと、また、ヘッドエンドには格別な機器が導入されなかったことに注意して欲しい。次に、配給ハブ４０によって、全国規模のプログラム・スケジュール１０が、配給ハブ４０が奉仕する各加入者５０に配給される。スケジュール１０は視聴者の施設に配置されているセットトップボックス５２で受信される。ここでは、スケジュールは、視聴者のテレビ受信機５４での表示のために本発明によって地方化されている。

ここで図２を参照すると、本発明の情報地方化フィルタ５３は、セットトップボックス５２で以下のように実行される。総合的な目的は、全国規模のプログラム・スケジュール１０を地方化版５５に変形することである。地方化版５５はその後、セットトップボックス記憶装置５６（ベニントンの図１ではＤＲＡＭ１６と命名されている）に記憶される。この説明的な実施例では、情報地方化フィルタ５３はセットトップボックス上で動いているＥＰＧソフトウエア・プログラムで実行される。しかし濾波は、以下に述べる手順を実行するように構成された専用のハードウエアで実行できる。当出願で述べているハードウエア版のフィルタ・システムと方法については、当技術に通じる当業者には容易に理解されるところであろう。ハードウエアとソフトウエアを組み合わせたフィルタをもまた、用いることができる。

セットトップボックス５２には、「グループ」の番号が指定される。好ましい実施例においては、セットトップのグループには、視聴者の以下の項目に対応するグループが含まれる。すなわち項目は、
−ケーブル運用業者（例えば、TCI）
−地理的区域（例えば、コロラド）
−特定のケーブル・システム（例えば、Mile Hi Cablevision）

である。グループは、容易に識別されるためと、後述するその他の理由のために、番号化される（例えば、ＥＰＧソフトウエア版＝２、地理的区域＝３、ケーブル運用業者＝４、ケーブル・システム＝５、ケーブル・ヘッドエンド＝６、加入者グループ＝７等）。以下、「範囲」という語は、同一の形のグループの集合を呼ぶために用いることにする。例えば、総てのケーブル運用業者に関しては、対応する範囲内の特定のメンバーを呼ぶために「グループ」という語を用いることにする。これに加えて、各グループには、対応する範囲の特定のメンバーを識別する目的で一定の範囲の番号が（例えば、１から２００までをケーブル運用業者に、２０１から５００までを地理的区域という具合に）指定される。

スケジュール情報を最初に受信するのに先立って、各セットトップボックス５２に、セットトップボックス５２がそのメンバーである総ての特定のグループに対応する１組のグループ番号が送られる。グループ番号を、ベニントンで論じられている何れかの方法でセットトップボックスに送ることができる。この１組のグループ番号によって、全国規模のプログラム・スケジュール供給に関するスケジュール情報を地方化する濾波条件が与えられる。これは、全国規模のプログラム・スケジュール供給１０の総てのプログラム・スケジュール・データにアドレスを付け、データのグループ・アドレスを視聴者のセットトップボックス５２に記憶されている１組のグループ番号と比較することによって可能となる。もしもこのデータが、セットトップボックスに見付からないグループ番号のアドレスに向けられていたとしたら、データは地方化フィルタ５３によって排除される。他方、もしプログラム・データ・アドレスとセットトップボックスのグループ番号との間に合致があれば、データは、視聴者サービス地域で入手可能なプログラムに相当し、したがって、プログラム・スケジュール・データベース５６に記憶される。全国的な加入者総てに向けて意図されたデータは、グループ番号なしでアドレスを付けられる。情報フィルタ５３は、かかるグループ番号なしでアドレスを付けられたデータの総てを通過させるように構成されている。視聴者の自身のサービス地域に対応するスケジュール情報のみが情報フィルタ５３によってＥＰＧメモリに受け渡され、それにより、全国規模のプログラム・スケジュール供給１０が「地方化」される。同時に本発明では、視聴者のサービス環境にとって無用な、無関係のプログラム・スケジュール情報を排除することで、システムのメモリが保存される。

例示のために、プログラムの記述のような全国的に入手可能なプログラムに対応するデータ項目がグループ番号なしでアドレスが呼ばれ、かかるデータがスケジュール・データベース５６に負荷されることが確かめられる。これと対照的に、地方でのみ入手可能なプログラム化に対応するデータは、プログラムが入手可能なレベルに共同する特異なグループ番号にアドレスを付けられる。同様なやり方で、全国規模のプログラム・スケジュール供給の総てのデータは、望ましい行き先に対応するグループ番号を伴うことによってアドレスが指定される。

本発明の他の局面では、ＥＰＧのメモリ５６への記憶に先だって地方化フィルタ５３で濾波される各項目には、それが濾波された範囲番号で名が付けられる。より大きな範囲番号は、上に示した例のように、より狭い範囲の目標データに対して指定される（ケーブル・ヘッドエンド＝６に対して地理的区域＝３であるように）。より大きな範囲番号は、より局地化（狭い）志向のデータがより有用性が高いことを反映している。ここで用いられる特定のグループ番号は例示を目的とするためだけのものであって、本発明の動作にとっては肝要なことではない。対応する範囲番号で濾波されたデータに名付けすることは、同一のデータが２つ以上の範囲に入るグループ番号で複数回送られる場合に有用である。この状況は、ペイパービュー・プログラムに関する価格データがケーブル運用業者（範囲＝４）のサービス地域内のケーブル・システム（範囲＝５）によって変動するところで生じる。この状況においては、より狭い範囲向けのデータに対応する価格は、より広い範囲向けのものよりも一層有用であろう。したがって、もしＥＰＧプログラムを実行するセットトップボックスのソフトウエアによって複数の価格データのコピーが受信されたならば、最も狭い範囲の版のみ、すなわち、最も関心があるデータのみが保存される。最も狭い範囲の版がプログラム・データベース５６に既に負荷されているならば、異なる範囲の版は受信されると直ぐにフィルタ５３によって廃棄される。もしより広い範囲の版が最初に受信されたならば、この版はより狭い範囲の版が受信されるまで保存される。より狭い範囲の版が受信される時点で、より広い範囲の版はより狭い範囲を有する版に置換される。

本発明の別のもう１つ実施例においては、セットトップボックスで行われる濾波の或るものは、ヘッドエンドで行われる。再び図１を参照すると、ヘッドエンドに配置されている信号処理装置３０には、ヘッドエンドよりもより狭い範囲のデータに対しては濾波が行われない点を除いて、ヘッドエンドに接続されているセットトップボックスと同様に構成される情報フィルタが用意されている。この構成により、このヘッドエンドに接続されているどのセットトップボックスでも必要とされないデータが排除され、ヘッドエンドとそれと関連するセットトップボックスとを接続する通路における送信帯域幅は自由になる。ヘッドエンドではこの帯域幅を用いて、加入者に送られるプログラム・スケジュール・データを送る頻度を高めることができる。これは、全国規模のプログラム・スケジュール供給１０で送信されるデータを「終結させる」ことを意味する。これがまた、全国規模のプログラム・スケジュール供給１０をヘッドエンドに送信するのにより遅いデータ・レートを用いることを容易にし、費用を低減させる。

Claims (20)

  1. 視聴者の施設に配置されている受信装置に於いて実施されるプログラム・スケジュール地方化システムであって：
    ａ）複数のサービス環境の各々を、該サービス環境における視聴者が属する少なくとも１つの地理的グループによって識別する手段；
    ｂ）該視聴者が属する該地理的グループを示すグループデータを記憶する手段；及び
    ｃ）前記複数のサービス環境に対する第１の複数のプログラム・スケジュールデータ項目を備える集合されたプログラム・スケジュール情報を受信する手段を備え、
    該第１の複数のプログラム・スケジュールデータ項目の各々が、該プログラム・スケジュールデータ項目が関連する前記地理的グループを示すアドレスデータを備え；
    更に、ｄ）該第１の複数のプログラム・スケジュールデータ項目各々に関連する該アドレスデータを前記記憶されたグループデータと比較すると共に、関連するアドレスデータが、前記視聴者が属する該地理的グループに適合する各プログラム・スケジュールデータ項目を該第１の複数のプログラム・スケジュールデータ項目から選択することによって、該視聴者のサービス環境に関連する第２の複数のプログラム・スケジュールデータ項目について該第１の複数のプログラム・スケジュールデータ項目をフィルタリングする手段；
    ｅ）該フィルタリングする手段によって選択されなかった該第１の複数のプログラム・スケジュールデータ項目の各々を廃棄する手段；及び
    ｆ）未だ記憶されていない前記第２の複数のプログラム・スケジュールデータ項目の各々を記憶する手段を備えるプログラム・スケジュール地方化システム。
  2. 前記集合されたプログラム・スケジュール情報は、集合された全国プログラミング・スケジュールデータ及び集合された地方プログラミング・スケジュールデータを更に備える、請求項１記載のシステム。
  3. 前記集合されたプログラム・スケジュール情報を受信する前記受信装置がケーブルヘッドエンドと結合され、該集合されたプログラム・スケジュール情報を該ケーブルヘッドエンドから受信する、請求項１記載のシステム。
  4. 前記視聴者の受信可能なケーブルオペレータに対応する別のグループデータを更に備える、請求項１記載のシステム。
  5. 前記地理的グループが前記視聴者の地理的領域に対応し、所定の番号によって表わされる、請求項１記載のシステム。
  6. 前記視聴者の特定のケーブルシステムに対応する別のグループデータを更に備える、請求項１記載のシステム。
  7. 前記視聴者のケーブルヘッドエンドに対応する別のグループデータを更に備える、請求項１記載のシステム。
  8. 前記視聴者の支払い済みサービス料金に対応する別のグループデータを更に備える、請求項１記載のシステム。
  9. 前記視聴者の電子プログラムガイド（ＥＰＧ）ソフトウエアバージョンに対応する別のグループデータを更に備える、請求項１記載のシステム。
  10. 前記第１の複数のプログラム・スケジュールデータ項目は、ペイパーヴュー方式価格づけデータ項目を備える、請求項１記載のシステム。
  11. 視聴者の施設に配置されている受信装置に於いて実施されるプログラム・スケジュール地方化方法であって：
    ａ）複数のサービス環境の各々を、該サービス環境における視聴者が属する少なくとも１つの地理的グループによって識別するステップ；
    ｂ）該視聴者が属する該地理的グループを示すグループデータを記憶するステップ；及び
    ｃ）前記複数のサービス環境に対する第１の複数のプログラム・スケジュールデータ項目を備える集合されたプログラム・スケジュール情報を受信するステップを備え、該第１の複数のプログラム・スケジュールデータ項目の各々が、該プログラム・スケジュールデータ項目の関連する該地理的グループを示すアドレスデータを備え；
    更に、ｄ）該第１の複数のプログラム・スケジュールデータ項目各々に関連する該アドレスデータを前記記憶されたグループデータと比較すると共に、関連するアドレスデータが、前記視聴者が属する該地理的グループに適合する各プログラム・スケジュールデータ項目を該第１の複数のプログラム・スケジュールデータ項目から選択することによって、該視聴者のサービス環境に関連する第２の複数のプログラム・スケジュールデータ項目について該第１の複数のプログラム・スケジュールデータ項目をフィルタリングするステップ；
    ｅ）該フィルタリングするステップによって選択されなかった該第１の複数のプログラム・スケジュールデータ項目の各々を廃棄するステップ；及び
    ｆ）未だ記憶されていない前記第２の複数のプログラム・スケジュールデータ項目の各々を記憶するステップを備えるプログラム・スケジュール地方化方法。
  12. 前記集合されたプログラム・スケジュール情報は、集合された全国プログラミング・スケジュールデータ及び集合された地方プログラミング・スケジュールデータを更に備える、請求項１１記載の方法。
  13. 前記集合されたプログラム・スケジュール情報を受信するステップが、該集合されたプログラム・スケジュール情報をケーブルヘッドエンドから受信するステップを更に備える、請求項１１記載の方法。
  14. 前記視聴者の受信可能なケーブルオペレータに対応する別のグループデータを更に備える、請求項１１記載の方法。
  15. 前記地理的グループが、前記視聴者の地理的領域に対応し、所定の番号によって表わされる、請求項１１記載の方法。
  16. 前記視聴者の特定のケーブルシステムに対応する別のグループデータを更に備える、請求項１１記載の方法。
  17. 前記視聴者のケーブルヘッドエンドに対応する別のグループデータを更に備える、請求項１１記載の方法。
  18. 前記視聴者の支払い済みサービス料金に対応する別のグループデータを更に備える、請求項１１記載の方法。
  19. 前記視聴者の電子プログラムガイド（ＥＰＧ）ソフトウエアバージョンに対応する別のグループデータを更に備える、請求項１１記載の方法。
  20. 前記第１の複数のプログラム・スケジュールデータ項目は、ペイパーヴュー方式価格づけデータ項目を備える、請求項１１記載の方法。
