Description
温度及び(又は)歪みの分布をモニタする必要性は、発電所の蒸気パイプから頑強構造や航空機体に至る多くの工学分野に存在する。センサは、大きな体積をカバーし、複雑な構造体の中に組み込み可能であり、かつ、電磁界の影響を受けないことが、しばしば必要とされる。光ファイバセンサであれば、これらの要求を満たし得る。温度分布測定用の光ファイバを用いた市販のセンシングシステムが入手可能である。しかし、これらのシステムは、ファイバ内の分布歪みを測定することはできない。もし歪みを測定できるのであれば、上記ファイバは、航空機部品、橋、ダムのような精密な構造体の中に埋め込んで、起こりうる破損に対する事前警告を与えるのに使用できるようになる。また、歪みを測定できるならば、圧力の測定も可能になる。これは、ファイバを押しつぶす作用がファイバを伸長させることになるからである。そのようなシステムの特別な応用例としては、石油踏査の分野がある。この分野では、ボアホール(穿孔)中の分布圧力(及び温度)センサとして上記ファイバを使用可能である。
ファイバ長に沿ったパラメータの変化を測定する光ファイバセンサは、2種類に分類できる。すなわち、準分布型と全分布型である。準分布型センシングにおいては、ファイバの或る部分が変更を加えられて局所測定用に使用され、その残りの部分は、単に光をセンサからセンサへと伝達して、最後にディテクタへと伝達するためにのみ使用される。全分布型センシングにおいては、ファイバは変更を加えられることなく、その全長が光の伝達及びセンシングに使用される。前分布型センサは、よりフレキシブルであり、既設のファイバと共に使用されうる。そして、この全分布型センサを使用することで、光ファイバ通信ネットワークの診断等の応用が可能となる。
歪み/温度の全分布型測定に利用可能な技術は、ブリュアン効果に基づいている。ここで、ファイバに入射した光のパワーの一部は、ファイバ内の或る地点で散乱され、これにより、その光波長が変化して光源へと戻ってくる。厳密には、その戻り光の波長は、光の散乱された地点でのファイバの歪み/温度に依存する。よって、戻り光の波長を測定することで、戻り光の生成された地点でのファイバの歪み/温度を得ることができる。もし入射光が短パルスとして放出された場合は、戻り光の波長を時間の関数として記録することにより、ファイバに沿った全地点での歪み/温度を測定することができる。
ブリュアンシフトの測定から歪みのみ又は温度のみを検出するのに利用される技術には2つある。技術(1)は、ポンププローブシステム(pump-probe system)を用いて周波数依存のブリュアンパワーを生成する技術であり、技術(2)は、光ヘテロダイン法を用いてブリュアン信号を検出する技術である。しかしながら、この2つの方法は、温度情報と歪み情報を解読するのに、ファイバの特別な配置が必要となる。例えば、既に提案されている或る解析法によれば、1つの区域が歪みから分離されて温度の影響のみを受けるように、単一のファイバを同じ領域に2度通過させるようにしている。この手法だと、センシング光ファイバケーブルの取り付けが複雑になり、また、既存の光ファイバネットワークと共に使用することができない。
1本の光ファイバの同一長さに沿って歪みと温度とを同時に測定することを望むのであれば、ブリュアン後方散乱光の振幅及び周波数シフトの両方を検出しなければならない。技術(1)の場合、ポンプビームとプローブビームとの相互作用が非線形であるため、生成された誘導ブリュアンパワーが実質的に温度及び歪みに依存しないので、失敗すると思われる。技術(2)の場合は、偏光ノイズ誘導信号のフェージングのため、困難であると思われる。
もう1つの技術(3)は、温度検出に利用されるものであり、狭帯域の光フィルタを使ってブリュアン後方散乱信号のパワーを測定する技術である。しかし、この技術は実用的でない。なぜなら、1)光フィルタの感度や光源の波長が変動するために振幅が変化し、2)ブリュアン後方散乱パワーを測定しただけでは歪みを決定できない、からである。
我々は、これらの困難性に打ち勝つ分布型センシングシステムを創案した。
我々の創案した技術は、光フィルタや光源周波数のいかなる変動にも打ち勝ち、かつ、ブリュアン散乱光の振幅及び周波数の両方を時間の関数として正確に検出するための参考案を提供し、従って、光ファイバの同一長さに沿った歪み及び温度の分布を同時に測定することを可能にする。
本発明によれば、温度と歪みの分布を同時に測定する装置が提供される。この装置は、光パルスを発生させるための光源と、該光源によって発生された光パルスを通過させ得る少なくとも1個の光ファイバからなるセンシングネットワークと、物理パラメータを前記センシング光ファイバに沿った歪み又は温度の変化に変換するようにし、それにより前記光ファイバを戻って来る後方散乱光(ブリュアン後方散乱信号及びレイリー後方散乱信号)のスペクトル感度に変化を与える変換手段と、既知の大きさの物理パラメータの下に置かれた参照区域と、レイリーピーク及びブリュアンピークを分析可能な走査型光フィルタ上へ戻り光の一部を送り、該光信号を電気信号に変換してから処理手段へ供給する受信手段とを備え、前記走査型光フィルタの走査速度を前記光パルスの反復速度よりも遅くし、前記後方散乱光のスペクトル光を前記光ファイバの長さに沿って記録可能にし、レイリーピークと比べてのブリュアンピークの振幅及び周波数シフトの両方を正確に測定可能にし、該測定値から光ファイバの同一長さに沿った温度分布及び歪み分布を決定可能である。
光が光ファイバを伝搬されると、戻り光が光ファイバの逆方向に伝搬される。この戻り光は、その多くが伝搬光と同一波長であるが(レイリーピーク)、光ファイバの振動状態のエネルギーと上記光との相互作用のために周波数シフトを有するものもある(ブリュアンピーク)。光にエネルギーが加わると、短い方の波長の後方散乱光(反ストークス散乱)が付与され、また、光からエネルギーが奪われると、長い方の波長の後方散乱光(ストークス散乱)が付与されることになり、それらのどちらか一方が起こりうる。レイリーピークと比べてのブリュアンピークの振幅及びブリュアンピークの周波数シフトは、光が後方散乱される位置までの光ファイバの歪み及び温度の尺度となる。
光源は、可視又は赤外スペクトルのコヒーレント光を発生することが好ましく、例えばそれはレーザであり、一般のレーザを使用可能である。光源は、狭い線幅のレーザであってよく、固体レーザ、半導体レーザ、又はファイバレーザであってよい。また、線幅及び動作波長をコントロールするための外部共振器を含んでいてもよい。
変調手段は、光源からの光をパルスにして、光がパルスの形態で光ファイバを伝搬されるようにする。光は、Qスイッチング技術、モード同期技術、又は直接変調技術を使って変調可能であり、或いは、音響光学変調器や集積光学変調器のような外部変調器によって変調してもよい。
後方散乱光及び光パルスを増幅可能な増幅手段を有するのが好ましい。光増幅器を用いて、送信器、受信器、及びセンシングネットワークでの光信号を増幅してもよく、また、増幅器は固体半導体増幅器や光ファイバ増幅器であってもよい。
変換手段は、測定すべきパラメータを、光ファイバ中の歪み又は温度の変化に変換する。例えば、もし構造体中の動きを測定するのであれば、変換手段はファイバを構造体に取り付ける手段となりうる。構造体中の圧力を測定したり電界を検出するためには、圧電素子を取り付けることが可能である。もしマイクロ波放射を検出するのであれば、ファイバをグラファイトのような導体で覆うことも可能である。
信号の質を改善し、かつ、バックグラウンドノイズからブリュアンピークを分離するためには、一連の信号を重ね合わせて平均をとることで、ノイズに対する改善信号を得るようにするのが好ましい。しかし、光フィルタ感度や光源波長等の変動のような変量が存在するため、これは一般に実用的でなかった。しかしながら、もし、ブリュアンピークよりも(約6倍)大きく、かつ温度及び歪みに対して比較的鈍感であるレイリーピークに関して後方散乱光を標準化してから、この標準化された信号を重ね合わせて平均をとれば、非常に良好なSN比のブリュアンピークが得られる、ということを我々は見出した。
光フィルタの走査速度は、光パルスの反復速度よりも非常に遅い速度に設定してある。これにより、後方散乱光の波長スペクトルを、光ファイバに沿った各区域毎に記録することが可能になる。後方散乱光の生成される位置は、パルスを送信してからその後方散乱光が戻ってくるまでの時間間隔によって決定される。
動作中、光パルスは光ファイバを伝搬され、フィルタは狭帯域に設定される。このフィルタのレンジ内での後方散乱光の戻りが、或る注目された時間(この時間は、後方散乱光の生成された位置の光ファイバ中の場所を与える)に受信された時に、その時の振幅及び光通過周波数を記録する。これを幾つかの時間間隔及び幾つかの光通過周波数で実行することにより、光ファイバに沿った様々な場所でのスペクトルを得ることができる。フィルタはレイリーピーク(これは伝搬光の周波数である)が検出されるように設定されることで、このフィルタの帯域幅でブリュアンピークも検出されることになる。動作中、光フィルタは或るレンジにわたって波長を走査して、ブリュアンピークとレイリーピークを検出する。この処理は、各光パルス毎に、光ファイバ中の多くの場所に対して実行可能である。
光源手段の動作波長及び(又は)センシング光ファイバの分散特性は、パルス及び生成された前方散乱ラマンストークス信号が光ファイバ中を異なる伝搬速度で伝搬し、かつ、これらが誘導ラマン散乱を避けるのに充分な長さを越えて去っていくような、そのようなやり方で調整可能である。このようにすることにより、高い励起パワーと、より長いセンシング光ファイバを使用できるようになる。
光ファイバの或る区域は既知の温度及び歪みになっており、これが参照用として使用され得る。すなわち、この参照区域におけるブリュアンピークの振幅と周波数シフトとを測定することで、他の地点から受信されたデータを温度及び歪みの測定値へと修正する。
ブリュアンスペクトルの分析には、干渉フィルタのようなフィルタ、例えばファブリー・ペロ干渉計のようなものを使用するのが好ましい。一般に、そのような干渉計は、関心のあるスペクトル全体が干渉計のフリースペクトルレンジ(FSR)内に有るように選択される。FSRは、その中に全てのスペクトル情報が示される周波数レンジであり、FSR外の周波数を有するどんなピークもなおFSR内に示される。しかしながら、これは、予測しえないピークの重複を招くこともありうるため、一般には望ましくない。本発明においては、FSRはブリュアンシフトよりも小さくなるよう選択するのが好ましい。このようにすることで、ブリュアンピークとレイリーピークとの間の周波数帯域の幾つかは走査しないようにすることを可能にし、その結果、スペクトル感度を得るのに非常に小さな走査レンジを使用できるようになる。
同様なスペクトル分析において、この技術によれば、従来の技術に要求される分析点の約百分の一の数を収集するだけで済む。通常、データはデータ処理プログラムの中で何度も操作されるので、上記技術によれば、歪み及び温度を測定するのに要求される時間を大幅に節減できる。
温度を測定するためには、レイリーピークに対するブリュアンピークの振幅比が測定され、周波数シフトは歪みの尺度となる。
得られた光信号は電気信号に変換されてからコンピュータに入力され、所望の形式で記録される。参照信号は参照区域によって生成され、好ましくは、同一のコンピュータに入力される。
検出手段は、アバランシェフォトダイオードのような、内部ゲインを備えた低ノイズの光検出器であってもよい。
より大きなセンシングネットワークを形成するために、複数の光ファイバか光ファイバケーブルを、例えば岩層中のパイプ回路やダウンホールのようなモニタすべき構造体中に、分散配置することが可能である。本発明の装置及び方法を使用することにより、どの地点での温度及び歪みも測定可能になる。
測定値はセンシング区域でのスペクトル感度に関して修正され、センシングファイバに沿った歪み分布及び温度分布が、ブリュアンピークの相対的な振幅及び位置を測定することにより算出される。
以下、添付の図面を参照しながら、本発明について説明する。
図1は、本発明の一実施形態の図である。この実施形態では、光ファイバが使用され、光源手段は外部変調がかけられてから増幅される。
図2〜4は、光フィルタ手段のそれぞれ異なる走査位置で記録された後方散乱光のトレースの図である。これらの図は、異なるセンシング場所でのスペクトル感度がどのように算出され、また、信号の平均化に先立って光フィルタや光源波長の変動がどのように修正されるのか、を示している。
図1において、レーザからなる光源(1)が、光ファイバ(2)によって、光をパルスにして送信するパルス変調器(3)に接続され、続いて光増幅器(4)に接続されている。光ファイバはカプラ(5)を介して延びている。
一般に(6)で示される、モニタすべき構造体中には、歪み及び温度の測定対象となる構造体を通って光ファイバ(13)が敷かれている。(14)には参照区域が存在し、この区域の温度及び歪みは既知であり、修正用測定値として使用される。
検出手段(12)は、センシングネットワーク手段(6)へ送信された光をモニタするのに使用可能である。受信器ユニット(7)では、後方散乱光の一部分が走査型光フィルタ(8)上へ進み、ここで狭い波長レンジが選択される。この選択された波長レンジの光パワーは、検出ユニット(9)を用いて測定され、電気信号に変換される。光のもう1つの部分も、検出ユニット(10)で直接モニタされて、各測定点でのレイリー後方散乱光が測定される。計算手段(11)は、戻って来た後方散乱光を時間の関数として記録する。光フィルタ(8)は、光源手段(1)のパルス反復速度よりも遅い速度で走査される。このようにすることで、1走査サイクルの期間中に多くの光パルスを送ることにより、選択された異なる波長での後方散乱光を得ることが可能になる。後方散乱光のトレースは組み合わされて、図2に示されるように、センシングファイバに沿った後方散乱光の全スペクトル感度が構成される。各スペクトル感度は、ファイバのそれぞれ異なる区域に対応しており、温度及び歪みに鈍感であって信号ノイズの影響を比較的受けにくいレイリーピークを参照して標準化される。加えて、検出ユニット(10)の出力は、測定精度を改善するため、レイリー信号と比べて各測定点を標準化し、かつ、それを光フィルタ(8)を通過後に検出ユニット(9)で検出されたレイリーピークと比較するのに、使用可能である。測定値は、センシング区域(13)のスペクトル感度に関して修正され、そして、センシングファイバに沿った歪み分布及び温度分布が、ブリュアンピークの相対的な振幅及び位置を測定することによって算出される。
以下、図2、3及び4を参照して説明する。

この図は、光ファイバ(13)上の位置1〜5から得られた結果を示している。1個の光パルスが導波路を伝搬するにつれて、光フィルタの通過周波数が記録され、戻り光信号が時間の関数として測定される。その短時間後、フィルタの通過周波数がゆっくりと走査されつつ上昇すると、2番目のパルスが放たれて、通過周波数が再度記録され、戻り光信号が時間の関数として再度測定される。位置1において、フィルタは周波数f1に設定されており、該周波数での戻り光の振幅が測定され、これが周波数f2、f3等においても繰り返されることで、f11、f12及びf13等として示される、位置1でのスペクトルが得られる。これと同じ測定が、光ファイバ(13)に沿った位置2〜5での各パルスにおいても同時に行われる。位置2における結果はf21、f22として、位置3における結果はf31、f32として、位置4における結果はf41、f42として、位置5における結果はf51、f52として、それぞれ示されている。
この処理は、全ての周波数スペクトルが収集されるまで続けられる。その後、コンピュータプログラムはデータを置き換えて、ファイバ中の関心のある位置での周波数スペクトル(図中の位置1〜5で示される周波数スペクトル)を含んだ配列形態で格納する。次に、ピーク検出プログラムが、各ピークの高さとそれら相互の周波数の分離を測定し、その結果から、関心のある位置(ここでは位置1〜5)での温度及び歪みを推測する。もし必要ならば、データを平均化するのに使用される処理が、図3に詳しく示されている。

この図は、より良いスペクトルを得るための平均化技術を示している。フィルタの各走査において、各場所でのスペクトルは、それらを平均化するとスペクトル3に示されたタイプのスペクトルが得られるよう、僅かにずらしてもよい。
スペクトル1及び2は、スペクトルを平均化してノイズを低減させる目的で、異なる時間に記録された、ファイバの同一位置からの周波数スペクトルを表している。光フィルタやレーザ光源の変動、及び走査位置の変化等のせいで、スペクトルは互いにシフトしているのがわかる。従来の平均化技術を使用すると、その処理されたスペクトルにはスペクトル3に示されるような重大な広がりが生じて、温度及び歪みの測定が不正確になりかねない。
ある技術が使用され、この技術によれば、ピーク検出系が、最も顕著なレイリーピークを見つけ出して、平均化すべきスペクトルをその各スペクトルのレイリーピークが重なり合うように“シフト”させる。これにより、スペクトル4に示される改善結果が得られる。この技術は信頼しうる。それは、(1)レイリーピークが温度及び歪みに鈍感であり、(2)レイリーピークが(ブリュアンピークよりも約60倍)大きいため、ノイズの影響を比較的受けにくく、(3)どんなフィルタ変動もこのピークに対して等しく影響する、からである。

ブリュアンスペクトルを解析するにあたっての光フィルタの従来の使用が図4aに示されている。この場合、FSRはブリュアンピーク間の周波数差よりも大きいので、スペクトル感度を得るには多くのデータ点を収集しなければならない。本実施形態においては、FSRはブリュアンシフトよりも小さくなるよう選択されている。この場合、ブリュアンピークは“逆投影”されるので、スペクトルの全体を得るのに非常に小さい走査レンジが使用される。
同じスペクトル分析であっても、この技術は、従来の技術に要求されるデータ点の約百分の一の数を収集するだけで済む。データは通常はデータ処理プログラムの中で幾度も操作されるので、この技術によれば、歪み及び温度を測定するのに要求される時間を大幅に節約できる。
Claims (11)
- 温度及び歪みの分布を同時測定する装置であって、光パルスを発生させるための光源と、該光源によって発生された光パルスを通過させ得る少なくとも1個の光ファイバからなるセンシングネットワークと、物理パラメータを前記センシング光ファイバに沿った歪み又は温度の変化に変換するようにし、それにより前記光ファイバを戻って来る後方散乱光(ブリュアン後方散乱信号及びレイリー後方散乱信号)のスペクトル感度に変化を与える変換手段と、既知の大きさの物理パラメータの下に置かれた参照区域と、レイリーピーク及びブリュアンピークを分析可能な走査型光フィルタ上へ戻り光の一部を送り、該光信号を電気信号に変換してから処理手段へ供給する受信手段とを備え、前記走査型光フィルタの走査速度を前記光パルスの反復速度よりも遅くし、前記後方散乱光のスペクトル光を前記光ファイバの長さに沿って記録可能にし、レイリーピークと比べてのブリュアンピークの振幅及び周波数シフトの両方を正確に測定可能にし、該測定値から光ファイバの同一長さに沿った温度分布及び歪み分布を決定可能である装置。
- 前記光源が可視又は赤外スペクトルの光を発生するレーザである請求項1記載の装置。
- 前記変調手段は、前記光源からの光をパルス化して、該光がパルスで前記光ファイバに送信されるようになされている請求項1又は2記載の装置。
- 前記後方散乱光及び前記光パルスを増幅する増幅手段が存在する請求項1乃至3のいずれか1つに記載の装置。
- 前記変換手段は、レイリーピークと比べてのブリュアンピークの振幅及び周波数シフトを前記光ファイバの歪み又は温度の変化に変換可能である請求項1乃至4のいずれか1つに記載の装置。
- 前記ブリュアンスペクトルを分析するための干渉フィルタが存在する請求項1乃至5のいずれか1つに記載の装置。
- 前記干渉フィルタのフリースペクトルレンジが前記後方散乱光のブリュアンシフトよりも小さい請求項6記載の装置。
- 構造体をモニタするためのセンシングネットワークであって、前記構造体中に分散配置された光ファイバのネットワークが存在し、該ネットワークが請求項1乃至7のいずれか1つに記載の装置を備えるセンシングネットワーク。
- 構造体中における温度及び歪みの分布を同時測定する方法であって、光パルスを発生させることと、前記構造体中に組み込まれた少なくとも1個の光ファイバからなるセンシングネットワークに前記光パルスを通過させることと、物理パラメータを前記センシング光ファイバに沿った歪み又は温度の変化に変換し、それにより前記光ファイバを戻って来る後方散乱光(ブリュアン後方散乱信号及びレイリー後方散乱信号)のスペクトル感度に変化を与えることと、前記後方散乱光を検出し該後方散乱光のレイリーピーク及びブリュアンピークを分析することと、該光信号を電気信号に変換してから処理手段へ供給することとを備え、既知の大きさの物理パラメータの下に置かれた参照区域を設け、前記光パルスの反復速度よりも遅い走査速度を有する走査型光フィルタ上へ戻り光の一部を送り、前記後方散乱光のスペクトル光を前記光ファイバの長さに沿って記録し、レイリーピークと比べてのブリュアンピークの振幅及び周波数シフトの両方を測定し、前記参照区域からの信号と比較することによって前記光ファイバの長さに沿った温度分布及び歪み分布を決定する方法。
- レイリーピークを参照して各後方散乱信号を標準化し、該標準化された信号を重ね合わせかつ平均化して平均値を得ることによって、複数の後方散乱信号が重ね合わせられる請求項9記載の方法。
- 前記ファイバに沿った前記後方散乱光の発生位置が、前記パルスの送信と前記後方散乱光の戻りとの間の時間間隔によって決定される請求項9又は10記載の方法。
