この発明による階調再現方法は、ブラック、シアン、マゼンタ、イエローからなる4色のインクが用いられる4色プリンタにおける階調再現方法であって、ブラックのインクによる単色黒をnレベルの階調数に制御するステップと、シアン、マゼンタ、およびイエローのインクによる三色混合黒をmレベルの階調数に制御するステップと、モノクロ画像のプリントであることを指定または検知するステップと、指定または検知に基づき、単色黒および三色混合黒を最大n+m−1の階調レベルごとに割当ててプリントするステップとを備えている。
