Abstract

<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce color drift and inconsistencies in density without decreasing a recording speed of an image. <P>SOLUTION: Respective inkjet recording heads 231-234 having respective ink ejection ports with similar recording characteristics are provided. Cyan ink is used for the recording head 231; magenta ink is used for the recording head 232; yellow ink is used for the recording head 233; and black ink is used for the recording head 234. When a white recording paper sheet is used as a recording medium, it is considered that a color difference between chromatic colors, that is, cyan, magenta and yellow and the color of the recording paper sheet is great, and it is considered that a color difference between an achromatic color, that is, black and the color of the recording paper sheet is small. Accordingly, the recording heads 231-233 using chromatic ink are arranged in such a manner that reference surfaces are directed downward, and the recording head 234 using achromatic ink is arranged in such a manner that a direction is reversed so that a reference surface can be directed upward. Thus, a just inverse relationship is established between the recording characteristics of the recording heads using the chromatic ink and those of the recording head using the achromatic ink. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI

Description

【0001】

[0001]
TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an image recording device such as a color ink jet recording device.
[0002]
[Prior art]
As an image recording apparatus that arranges a plurality of recording heads in which a plurality of recording elements are arranged and performs image recording on a recording medium using different color materials, for example, a color inkjet recording apparatus using ink as a color material is known. Are known.
[0003]
The color inkjet recording apparatus can perform full-color image recording using, for example, four color inks of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. In such a printing apparatus, there is known a printing head in which a plurality of printing elements, that is, a plurality of ink ejection ports, and a plurality of line printing heads arranged in a line direction are arranged in correspondence with each ink. This recording apparatus can collectively perform collective recording in the line direction, for example, collective recording of one line once or twice, so that the recording speed can be improved.
[0004]
However, the line recording head requires precise fine processing in a manufacturing process in order to provide a large number of ink ejection ports having a diameter of about several tens of μ at an interval of, for example, 1/150 inch in a line direction. It is very difficult to manufacture a long head that can obtain the same recording characteristics at the ejection port. For example, a head whose density characteristic is high on the left side but low on the right side, or a head whose density characteristic changes with a certain periodicity is manufactured.
[0005]
In a color inkjet recording apparatus in which a plurality of such inkjet heads are arranged in parallel at predetermined intervals in the transport direction of a recording medium orthogonal to the line direction, and each head ejects a different color ink, There has been a problem that color shift and density unevenness occur due to variations in recording characteristics of ink ejection ports between heads.
For this reason, conventionally, the head is reciprocated several times to print the same area, and the head is printed in a zigzag manner during that time, so that color misregistration and uneven density are not noticeable.
[0006]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, such a printing method has a problem that the recording speed of an image is reduced.
Therefore, the present invention provides an image recording apparatus capable of improving image quality by reducing color shift and density unevenness without lowering the image recording speed.
[0007]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
The present invention provides an image recording apparatus in which a plurality of recording heads each including a plurality of recording elements are arranged and arranged, and each recording head performs image recording on a recording medium using a different color material. The recording characteristics of the elements are substantially the same except for at least one element, and at least one element is different from the others.
[0008]
BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
Hereinafter, an embodiment of the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings. In this embodiment, an embodiment in which the present invention is applied to a color inkjet recording apparatus will be described.
[0009]
FIG. 1 is a view showing a mechanism of a color ink jet recording apparatus. A drum 12 which rotates in a direction indicated by an arrow at a constant peripheral speed is provided in a main body case 11, and paper feed rollers 13 and 14 are attached to the drum 12. A recording medium 15 such as a recording sheet fed through the recording medium 15 is wound.
[0010]
That is, a paper feed cassette 16 is provided at the bottom of the main body case 11, and the recording media 15 placed on the loading plate 17 of the paper feed cassette 16 are taken out one by one by a feed roller 18, and The recording medium 15 fed from a manual tray 19 which is openably and closably mounted on the side of the main body case 11 is fed to the paper feed rollers 13 and 14 by a feed roller 20. It has become. Switching between feeding by the feeding roller 18 and feeding by the feeding roller 20 is performed by a feed switching unit 21.
[0011]
A charging roller 22 for adsorbing the recording medium 15 fed from the paper feed rollers 13 and 14 onto the drum surface is disposed opposite to the drum 12. Further, four ink jet recording heads 231, 232, 233, and 234 in which a large number of recording elements are arranged in a line are opposed to the drum 12. Each of the ink jet recording heads 231 to 234 is incorporated in the printing mechanism 24, and is movable in the rotation axis direction of the drum 12, which is the arrangement direction of the recording elements.
Accordingly, the recording medium 15 is conveyed by the rotation of the drum 12 in a direction substantially orthogonal to the arrangement direction of the recording elements of the inkjet recording heads 231 to 234.
[0012]
In each of the ink jet recording heads 231 to 234, the recording head 231 ejects cyan (C) ink, the recording head 232 ejects magenta (M) ink, and the recording head 233 ejects yellow (Y) ink. The head 234 ejects black (K) ink. The recording head 231, the recording head 232, the recording head 233, and the recording head 234 are arranged on the recording medium 15, which is wound around the drum 12 and conveyed, from upstream in the conveying direction. , And are arranged in parallel at a predetermined interval.
As shown in FIG. 2, each of the ink jet recording heads 231 to 234 has a large number of ink ejection ports 23a as recording elements arranged at a predetermined pitch d.
[0013]
The printing mechanism 24 includes a reciprocating mechanism 25 on which the ink jet recording heads 231 to 234 are mounted, a motor unit 26 having a reciprocating rod and a linear motor, and a reciprocating means 27. The ink jet recording heads 231 to 234 are moved forward and backward with respect to the peripheral surface of the drum 12. The reciprocating mechanism 25 is controlled to move in the rotation axis direction of the drum 12 by the motor unit 26 to reciprocate each of the ink jet recording heads 231 to 234 in the rotation axis direction of the drum 12, that is, in the recording line direction. It has become.
[0014]
A peeling claw 28 that can be inserted between the drum surface and the recording medium 15 is disposed on the drum 12, and the recording medium 15 peeled by the peeling claw 28 is discharged to a recording medium discharge and transport mechanism 29. It has become. The recording medium discharge / conveyance mechanism 29 includes a belt conveyor 30 that is in contact with the non-recording surface of the recording medium 15 and a pressing unit 31 that presses the recording medium 15 against the surface of the belt conveyor 30.
[0015]
At the end of the belt conveyor 30, the recording medium 15 conveyed by the belt conveyor 30 is discharged to an upper discharge tray 32 formed on the upper part of the main case 11, or the recording medium 15 is attached to and detached from the side of the main case 11. A direction switch 34 is provided for switching whether or not to discharge to a freely discharge tray 33.
[0016]
In the main body case 11, a main motor 35 for rotating and driving each part, an ink cassette 36 serving as an ink supply source, an ink buffer 37 for temporarily storing ink from the ink cassette 36, and the ink of the ink buffer 37 An ink supply tube 38 and the like to be supplied to the inkjet recording heads 231 to 234 are housed.
[0017]
As shown in FIG. 3, the ink ejection volume from the ink ejection port 23a of each of the ink jet recording heads 231 to 234 can be changed by changing the energization time t to the head drive unit. By controlling the energization time between t 1 and t 2, which are proportional to the change, for example, into seven divisions, dot printing from one gradation to seven gradations is performed as shown in FIG. Then, image recording control of 8 gradations including 0 gradation in which ink is not ejected can be performed. Note that the dotted square indicates the size of one pixel.
[0018]
In the color inkjet recording apparatus having such a configuration, at the time of recording, for example, the recording medium 15 is taken out from the paper supply cassette 16 by the paper supply roller 18 and sent out to the paper supply rollers 13 and 14. Then, the recording medium 15 is fed to the rotating drum 12 by the paper feed rollers 13 and 14 and wound. That is, the recording medium 15 is attracted and wound on the surface of the drum 12 by the charging roller 22.
[0019]
The rotation of the drum 12 causes the recording medium 15 to rotate in the direction in which the ink jet recording heads 231 to 234 are arranged, and the recording medium 15 is transmitted from the ink ejection ports of the ink jet recording heads 231 to 234 to the recording medium 15 at a predetermined timing based on an image signal. And selectively ejects ink of the corresponding color to perform color image recording.
[0020]
FIG. 5 is a block diagram showing the configuration of the entire system. A host computer 41 and a color inkjet recording device 42 are connected by a cable 43. Then, a color image signal is transferred from the host computer 41 to the color inkjet recording device 42.
[0021]
The color inkjet recording apparatus 42 includes a CPU (central processing unit) 421 constituting a control unit main body, a RAM (random memory) provided with a work memory when the CPU 421 performs processing, a temporary storage memory for temporarily storing image signals, and the like. An access memory 422, a ROM (read only memory) 423 storing program data and the like for the CPU 421 to control each section, an interface 424 for transmitting and receiving data to and from the host computer 41, and a printing mechanism 425 are connected. An I / O port 426 is provided.
[0022]
The printing mechanism unit 425 includes a recording head unit 427 including the inkjet recording heads 231 to 234 and a head driving unit 428 that drives the inkjet recording heads 231 to 234 of the recording head unit 427. The printing mechanism 425 is, of course, provided with the printing mechanism 24 described above.
[0023]
The CPU 421 controls the printing mechanism 425 to perform printing. That is, when the CPU 421 receives a color image signal from the host computer 41, the CPU 421 temporarily stores the image signal in the RAM 422, performs image processing on the image signal, supplies it to the printing mechanism 425, and records the color image on the printing mechanism 425. The operation is performed.
[0024]
FIG. 6 is a functional block diagram showing an image processing function executed by the image processing program stored in the ROM 423. For example, a standard RGB image signal of 8 bits for each color is displayed on a monitor or the like by the color conversion processing unit 51. The color conversion processing unit 51 converts the color into a CMY color that the color inkjet recording device 42 reproduces.
[0025]
Next, the UCR processing unit 52 extracts the black component from the CMY colors, determines the subsequent CMY colors, and finally converts the CMY colors into CMYK colors. Next, the tone correction section 53 performs γ correction. That is, the density correction according to the substantial output characteristic of the recording device 42 is performed. Finally, in the pseudo gradation processing section 54, for each color, the image signal of one pixel is converted into the printing capability of the recording device 42, for example, a 3-bit multi-valued image signal C'M'Y adjusted to eight gradations. Converted to 'K' and output.
[0026]
The recording characteristics of an ink jet recording head are often determined to some extent by the manufacturing process. For example, in an ink jet recording head having N ink ejection ports with nozzle numbers 1 to N, the recording density characteristic linearly changes as shown in FIG. On the contrary, there are some which change linearly as shown in FIG. The recording density characteristic is not limited to this, but may change in a curved shape.
[0027]
Therefore, when the ink jet recording heads 231 to 234 are arranged side by side, they are sorted and arranged according to the flow shown in FIG. That is, in step S1, a recording head is manufactured and the recording characteristics are inspected. Subsequently, in step S2, the recording heads are sorted. That is, heads having similar recording characteristics are sorted. If the manufacturing lots are the same, the recording characteristics between the ink ejection ports in the recording heads are similar, but the recording characteristics are similar between the recording heads. Therefore, you may sort on a lot basis.
[0028]
Subsequently, in step S3, the color material used for each recording head, that is, the color of the ink is determined. Here, it is determined which recording head is to use cyan ink, magenta ink, yellow ink, or black ink. Subsequently, in step S4, a recording medium is determined. Here, the recording medium is determined to be white recording paper.
Subsequently, in step S5, the orientation of the head arrangement is determined from the color difference between the determined color material and the recording medium. Then, in step S6, the recording head is arranged according to the determined orientation.
[0029]
FIG. 10 shows a specific example of the recording heads arranged in this manner. That is, as the ink jet recording heads 231 to 234, those having similar recording characteristics of the respective ink ejection ports are prepared. Since the recording head 231 uses cyan C ink, the recording head 232 uses magenta M ink, the recording head 233 uses yellow Y ink, and the recording head 234 uses black K ink. , The recording heads 231 to 233 are arranged in the same direction, and the recording head 234 is arranged in a reversed direction. In this case, since the reference surfaces of the recording heads 231 to 234 are determined, they are arranged so that the reference surfaces are always in contact with the substrate. The distance between the ink ejection ports of each of the recording heads 231 to 234 is adjusted to be substantially equal. The fine adjustment is performed by electrically adjusting the timing.
[0030]
That is, in this case, white recording paper is used as the recording medium 15, so that the chromatic color of cyan, magenta, and yellow has a large color difference from the recording paper, and the achromatic color of black has a small color difference from the recording paper. Therefore, the ink jet recording heads 231 to 233 using chromatic inks are arranged in the same direction so that the reference surface is located downward, and the ink jet recording heads 234 using achromatic ink are arranged such that the reference surface is directed upward. Reverse the orientation. As a result, the recording characteristics of each ink ejection port of the ink jet recording head 234 are exactly opposite to those of the other ink jet recording heads 231 to 233.
[0031]
By arranging the ink jet recording heads 231 to 234 in this way, in a color image in which chromatic colors of cyan, magenta, and yellow are superimposed and recorded, the recording characteristics of the ink ejection ports between the heads are similar, so that color misregistration occurs. Is unlikely to occur. That is, the color shift of the color image can be suppressed as much as possible.
[0032]
In addition, by using chromatic colors and black achromatic colors in a superimposed manner, the recording characteristics of the ink ejection ports between the heads are similar for chromatic colors alone, and density unevenness occurs due to these recording characteristics. By superimposing black from the ink jet recording head 234 having the recording characteristics described above, density unevenness is eliminated as a whole.
[0033]
As described above, the color shift of the color image can be suppressed as much as possible, and the density unevenness can be eliminated, so that the overall image quality can be improved. In addition, there is no need to perform a control that requires time to reciprocate the head several times to print the head in zigzag in order to eliminate color misregistration and density unevenness, and the image recording speed does not decrease.
[0034]
Here, the ink jet recording heads 231 to 233 using chromatic ink and the ink jet recording head 234 using achromatic ink are arranged so that their reference planes are reversed, but the present invention is not limited to this. Not something.
[0035]
Hereinafter, modified examples of the arrangement of the inkjet recording head will be described.
[0036]
For example, as shown in FIG. 11, similarly to black, yellow may have a small color difference from recording paper. That is, it can be determined that even if a slight color shift occurs between yellow and other chromatic colors, it is inconspicuous. Therefore, the ink jet recording head 233 using the yellow ink is arranged so that the orientation is reversed so that the reference surface is upward. As a result, the recording characteristics of each ink ejection port of the ink jet recording heads 233 and 234 are exactly opposite to the recording characteristics of each ink ejection port of the other ink jet recording heads 231 and 232.
[0037]
By arranging the ink jet recording heads 231 to 234 in this manner, in the case of cyan and magenta having a large color difference from the recording paper, the recording characteristics of the ink ejection ports between the heads are similar, so that color misregistration does not easily occur. Further, yellow is not so noticeable because the color difference from the recording paper is small. Therefore, color shift of a color image can be suppressed as a whole.
[0038]
Further, the recording characteristics of the inkjet recording head 233 using the yellow ink have recording characteristics that are exactly opposite to those of the inkjet recording heads 231 and 232 using the cyan and magenta inks. Is eliminated. When the black ink is overlaid, the density unevenness is eliminated as in the above-described embodiment.
Therefore, in this case, the same operation and effect as those of the above-described embodiment can be obtained.
[0039]
When red recording paper is used as the recording medium 15, the ink jet recording heads 231 to 234 are arranged as shown in FIG. That is, since it can be seen that the cyan ink and the yellow ink have a larger color difference from the recording paper than the magenta ink and the black ink, the inkjet recording head 231 using the cyan ink and the yellow ink are used. The ink jet recording heads 233 are arranged in the same direction so that their reference planes face down, and the ink jet recording heads 232 using magenta ink and the ink jet recording heads 234 using black ink face up. And place it upside down.
[0040]
By arranging the ink jet recording heads 231 to 234 in this way, in the case of cyan and yellow having a large color difference from the recording paper, the recording characteristics of the ink discharge ports between the heads are similar, and thus color misregistration does not easily occur. Magenta is not so noticeable because the color difference from the recording paper is small. Therefore, color shift of a color image can be suppressed as a whole.
[0041]
The recording characteristics of the ink jet recording head 232 using magenta ink have recording characteristics that are exactly opposite to those of the ink jet recording heads 231 and 233 using cyan and yellow inks. Is eliminated. When the black ink is overlaid, the density unevenness is eliminated as in the above-described embodiment.
Therefore, in this case, the same operation and effect as those of the above-described embodiment can be obtained.
[0042]
In this embodiment, a description has been given of an example in which the present invention is applied to a color ink jet recording apparatus in which four ink jet recording heads using four color inks of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black are arranged. is not.
[0043]
For example, in addition to a four-color recording head, an ink jet recording head using a light cyan ink, which is a color material having substantially the same hue as cyan and having a different density, and a light material having a substantially same hue as magenta and having a different density. The present invention can also be applied to a color ink jet recording apparatus having an ink jet recording head using magenta ink.
[0044]
That is, as shown in FIG. 13, an ink jet recording head 235 using light cyan ink is disposed between an ink jet recording head 231 using cyan ink and an ink jet recording head 232 using magenta ink. An inkjet recording head 236 using light magenta ink is disposed between an inkjet recording head 232 using ink and an inkjet recording head 233 using yellow ink.
[0045]
The ink jet recording head 231 is arranged with the reference surface facing down, whereas the ink jet recording head 235 is arranged with the reference surface facing up. That is, the recording characteristics of the ink ejection ports of the inkjet recording head 231 and the inkjet recording head 235 are slightly reversed.
[0046]
In addition, the ink jet recording head 232 is arranged with the reference surface facing down, whereas the ink jet recording head 236 is arranged with the reference surface facing up. That is, the recording characteristics of the ink discharge ports of the ink jet recording head 232 and the ink jet recording head 236 are slightly reversed.
[0047]
By using such six colors of ink, not only the quality of the color recorded image but also the gradation can be improved. Light cyan ink has almost the same hue as cyan ink but different densities. This is the same in the case of light magenta ink with respect to magenta ink.
[0048]
When the recording medium is white, cyan, magenta, and yellow inks have a large color difference with respect to recording paper, but black inks have a small color difference with respect to recording paper.
Therefore, as a whole, the arrangement of the ink jet recording heads 231 to 236 is as shown in FIG.
[0049]
As described above, the recording characteristics of the ink jet recording head 235 using the light cyan ink are opposite to those of the ink jet recording head 235 using the light cyan ink, and the ink jet recording head using the magenta ink is reversed. Since the recording characteristics of each ink ejection port of the ink jet recording head 236 using light magenta ink are opposite to those of H.232, the overall ink amount balance is improved, and the density unevenness is also reduced in this respect. You.
[0050]
The functions and effects of the recording characteristics between the inkjet recording heads 231 to 234 using cyan, magenta, yellow, and black inks are the same as those in the above-described embodiment.
In each of the above-described embodiments, a plurality of ink jet recording heads having the same recording characteristics are prepared, and the reference surface of the ink jet recording head is inverted for a part of the recording heads to obtain the opposite recording characteristics. The present invention is not necessarily limited to this, and an ink jet recording head having reversed recording characteristics may be prepared, and the ink jet recording head may be arranged so that the direction of the reference surface is aligned with the other ink jet recording heads.
[0051]
【The invention's effect】
As described above in detail, according to the present invention, it is possible to provide an image recording apparatus capable of improving the image recording speed without lowering the image recording speed.
