Description
【発明の属する技術分野】
本発明は、クラッド層ポンプの光ファイバレーザを含む装置とシステムに関する。

【従来の技術】
クラッド層ポンプのファイバレーザ(Cladding pumped fiber lasers(CPFL))は公知であり、これに関しては、例えば H. Po et al. 著の Electronics Letters, Vol. 29(17), p. 1500, Aug 19, 1993 と、P. Glas et al. 著の Optics Communications, Vol. 122, p. 163, Jan. 1, 1996 と米国特許第5,121,460号を参照のこと。このようなレーザは、高い光学パワー(例、10W)を生成するのに用いられ、そしてファイバ増幅器あるいはレーザをポンピングするのに用いられる。

CPFLにおいては、広面積のレーザダイオードからの光学パワーは、クラッド層ポンプファイバの稀土類(例、Nd,Yb)ドープのコア内でシングルモードレーザ発振に変換される。高ポンプパワーをCPFLに結合するために、通常は比較的大きな直径のクラッド層(例、250μm以上)を有するファイバを使用することが必要である。しかし、CPFLのシングルモード出力の従来の要件により、CPFLのコアの直径は8μm以下に抑えられている。

このようにクラッド層の断面とコアの断面との面積の不均衡により、デバイスの長さが長くなる、例えば200mにする必要がある。その理由は、CPFL構造体内のポンプ放射の吸収は、コア対クラッド層の断面積比に比例するからである。さらにまた従来のCPFL構造体においては、ファイバのコア内の光学パワー密度は高く、特にハイパワーのCPFLにおいては、その構成材料に損傷を与えるほど大きいものである。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】
したがって本発明の目的は、ハイパワーのCPFLを提供することである。

【課題を解決するための手段】
本発明は、改良されたCPFLを有するシステム(例えばこのような増幅器を有する光ファイバ増幅器あるいは通信システム)で実現される。例えばこの改良されたCPFLは、類似の従来のCPFLよりも短く(例、100m以下の長さ)および/あるいは類似の従来のCPFLよりもより高いパワーでもって動作可能である。

本発明のCPFLは、高屈折率(ほぼ円形)のコアと、このコアを包囲する低屈折率のクラッド層を有するある長さの光ファイバを含む。このコアは、直径dc を有し、光ファイバは、波長λのレーザ発振の導波基本空間モードLP01をサポートする。このレーザ発振のLP01モードは、モード直径d01を有する。このコアは、稀土類ドーパント(例、NdまたはYb)を含有し、波長λのレーザ発振を行う。さらに本発明の装置は、波長λp(λp<λ)のポンプ発振を光ファイバ内に導入する手段を有する。

本発明にとって重要なことは、稀土類ドーパントはコアを有する光ファイバの部分内に分散して、その直径dREはd01よりも大きい。

本発明の一実施例においては、コアの直径dc はLP01モードはレーザ発振の導波空間モードのみであるよう選択され、そして稀土類ドーパントはコア内に分散して第1クラッド領域がこのコアに隣接している。

本発明の他の実施例においては、コア直径dc は光ファイバがLP01モードに加えてレーザ発振の少なくとも1つのより高次の導波モード(通常LP11と称するがLP02を排除するものではない)を有するよう選択され、そして稀土類ドーパントの直径dREはdc に等しいかあるいはそれ以上である。

LP01モードの直径(d01)は、波長λにおいて全LP01パワーの70%を含む光ファイバの断面積の直径として定義する。LP01モードの形状およびd01の値は、T. Lenahan 著の Bell System Technical Journal, Vol. 62, p. 2663 (1983)に記載された数値計算により決定できる。さらにまた様々なモードについては、前掲の米国特許第5,121,460号を参照のこと。

稀土類ドーパント分布の直径(dRE)は、光ファイバ中の稀土類ドーパントの全量の90%を含む断面積の直径として定義する。

【発明の実施の形態】
図1はCPFL用の光ファイバ10の断面図である。同図において、コア12の周囲に内側(第1)クラッド層13と外側(第2)クラッド層11とが形成されている。図2は半径rと光ファイバ10の屈折率nの関係を表す図で、12′はコア12の屈折率で、11′と13′はそれぞれクラッド層11,13の屈折率である。稀土類ドーパント(Nd)の濃度は、コア12,内側(第1)クラッド層13に亘ってほぼ一定で、コア12はさらに屈折率上昇用ドーパント(Ge)を含む。

コアの直径dc は約8μmで、その直径と屈折率は光ファイバがレーザ波長λでシングルモードファイバであるように選択される。言い換えると光ファイバは、波長λで唯一の導波モード即ち基本空間モードLP01を有する。光ファイバにおいてこの有効モード直径はd01とする。図1,2の本発明の一実施例においては、内側(第1)クラッド層13の外部直径dRE>1.1d01となるよう選択される。

小さな径のdREに対しては、本発明の一実施例による利点(例えば、ポンプ放射を光ファイバのコアに結合する向上率)は小さい。例えばdRE=1.1d01の場合にはCPFLの長さの減少率は、従来の対応するCPFLの長さの20%以下でしかない。

本発明の一実施例においては、コアの直径と屈折率は、光ファイバは波長λで、少なくとも2個の導波空間モード(LP01とLP11)を有するよう選択される。マルチモード(例、デュアルモード)の光ファイバのコアの直径はシングルモードファイバのコアよりも遥かに大きくクラッド層からのポンプ放射を稀土類をドープしたコアにより容易に結合できるようにしている。

図3は、デュアルモードファイバ30の屈折率プロファイルを表し、参照番号31は通常Geをドープしたコアを、参照番号32はクラッド層を表す。経験的にこのコアの直径は、稀土類元素が分布した領域の直径にほぼ等しいが、後者(即ち、稀土類元素が分布した領域の直径)は前者(コアの直径)以上でもよい。

図4は、本発明によりクラッド層ポンプ光ファイバレーザ40とファイバ増幅器とを有する光ファイバ通信システムの関連部分を表す図である。

波長λp のポンプ放射が従来方法によりデュアルモード光ファイバ41のクラッド層に導入される。このファイバのコアには適当な稀土類ドーパント(例、NdまたはYb)がドーピングされ、そしてdREはdc にほぼ等しい。ポンプ放射がコアに結合され、そして稀土類ドーパントイオンにより吸収され波長λのレーザ発振となる。そしてコア内を伝播する放射の一部はLP01モードとLP11モードである。

デュアルモードファイバ41は、屈折率グレーティング45,46,47を有し、これらは米国特許出願08/712,694に記載されたモード結合グレーティングを有する。このグレーティングは、光ファイバのコア内のみに存在し、クラッド層内のポンプ放射には何等影響を及ぼさない。

屈折率グレーティング45は、高反射率(ほぼ100%の反射率)のモード結合グレーティング(mode coupling grating(MCG))である。このようなグレーティングは、波長λの入射光LP01放射をLP11放射として反射し、そしてその逆も行うよう選択される。グレーティング46は、中間の反射率(例;約98%の反射と約2%の透過)のMCGであり、波長λの入射LP01放射の一部xをLP01として透過し、一部(1−x)をLP11として反射し、入射LP11のx′(必ずしもxに等しくはない)をLP11として透過し、そして一部(1−x′)をLP01として反射する。

グレーティング47は高反射率(ほぼ100%)のグレーティングで波長λの入射LP11放射のほぼ100%をLP11として反射し、波長λの全ての入射LP01をLP01として透過する。このレーザは、LP11の代わりLP02を用いるよう設計することもできる。

上記の特性を有するグレーティングは公知であり、前掲の米国特許出願08/712,694にその製造方法は開示されている。

次にクラッド層ポンプ光ファイバレーザ40の動作を説明するが、屈折率グレーティング45−47は双方性要素であり、即ちこのグレーティングは、下流方向放射と上流方向放射に対し、同一の機能を実行する。

次にクラッド層ポンプ光ファイバレーザ40の動作について説明する。例えば波長λの上流方向に伝搬するLP11の放射について考えてみる。この放射は、屈折率グレーティング45でLP01として反射され(480)、そしてグレーティング46まで伝播し、そこで一部(1−x)がLP11として反射され(481)、一部xはLP01として伝播し、グレーティング47を何等変化せずに通過して(482)、その後使用される。

この反射された一部(1−x)は、屈折率グレーティング45まで伝播し、グレーティング46に伝播するLP01として反射され、グレーティング46で一部xはLP01として透過し、一部(1−x)はLP11として反射される。伝送された一部xは、グレーティング47を通過し、さらにその後使用される。レーザキャビティ内の放射性の他の要素の類似の理由付けを用いることにより本発明のレーザの動作は容易に明かとなる。

図4において、参照符号480−484は、グレーティングにより行われる機能を特定するためのものである。例えば、参照番号481はグレーティング46は入射光の一部(例、2%)を何等変化させずに伝送し、そして反射された部分のモードを変化させることを意味する。参照番号482と484は、それぞれ入射光LP01の未変化の伝送と入射光LP11の未変化の反射を表す。

図4において、グレーティング47を通過する波長λのLP01放射は、ファイバカプラ(WDM)42まで伝播してシングルモードファイバ43に結合され、そして従来の稀土類ドープ増幅器ファイバ44まで伝播してポンプ放射として機能する。

図4の実施例は本発明よる唯一のポンプレーザ構成を表すものではない。例えば、レーザキャビティ内に2つの長距離(透過)モードコンバータグレーティングを有するレーザを具備することも可能である。

図5において、ポンプ放射λp は、デュアルモードファイバ51のクラッド層に結合され、さらにファイバの稀土類をドープしたコアに結合される。グレーティング52は、MCGで、このMCGは入射レーザ放射(波長λ)のほぼ100%を変換して反射する。そしてこの変換は、LP01からLP11あるいはLP11からLP01である。

グレーティング53は、入射LP11放射のほぼ100%を反射し、入射放射LP01のほぼ100%を透過するが、この場合両方ともモード変換は行われない。そしてグレーティング54は、入射放射LP01の所定部分(例、10%)を透過し、残り(例、90%)を反射させるが、この場合も両方ともモード変換は行われない。グレーティング54を介して伝送されるLP01レーザ放射は、例えば光ファイバ増幅器(図示せず)までシングルモードファイバ55内を導かれる。

図6の実施例は、図5の実施例に類似した構成であるが、グレーティング63,64,ファイバ65は、図5の対応するそれぞれの要素とは異なったものである。グレーティング63のは、波長λの入射放射LP01のほぼ100%を反射し、その波長の入射放射LP11のほぼ100%を透過するが、この場合両方ともモード変換は行われない。グレーティング64は、波長λの入射放射LP11のほぼ10%を透過し、残りを反射させるが、この場合両方ともモード変換は行われない。ファイバ65は波長λの導波LP01とLP11の放射用の放射モードに適したデュアルモードファイバである。

図5,6の実施例は、LP11の代わりにLP02を用いるためのものである。

本発明のさらなる実施例においては、図5,6のレーザは並列に動作して結合出力を出すように構成することもできる。図4の組み合わせは、光ファイバ通信システム400の一部であり、この光ファイバ通信システム400は従来の要素、例えば送信器401と受信機402を接続する光ファイバ伝送パスとを有する。図5,6の実施例は類似のシステムの一部である。

【発明の効果】
以上述べたように本発明は、ハイパワーのCPFLを提供することである。本発明は、改良されたCPFLを有するシステム、例えばこのような増幅器を有する光ファイバ増幅器あるいは通信システムで実現される。この改良されたCPFLは、類似の従来のCPFLよりも短く(例、100m以下の長さ)および/あるいは類似の従来のCPFLよりもより高いパワーでもって動作可能である。本発明のCPFLは、高屈折率(ほぼ円形)のコアと、このコアを包囲する低屈折率のクラッド層を有するある長さの光ファイバを含む。

Claims (9)
- ポンプ放射が導入された低屈折率のクラッド層(13)と、前記クラッド層により包囲される高屈折率の円形コア(12)とを有する、レーザ光学キャビティを規定しているある長さの光ファイバを含むクラッド層ポンプファイバレーザ(40)を有する装置において、
前記コアの直径dc は、前記光ファイバが波長λのレーザ放射の基本導波空間モードLP01をサポートできるよう選択され、
前記LP01モードは、有効モード直径d01を有し、
前記コア(12)は、光ファイバ内にレーザ放射を放出する稀土類ドーパントを有し、
前記稀土類ドーパントは、前記コア又は前記コアと前記クラッド層の一部のみとに分布し、
前記稀土類ドーパントの分布領域の直径dREは、前記LP01モードの有効モード直径d01よりも大きいことを特徴とするクラッド層ポンプファイバレーザを有する装置。 - 前記LP01モードは、光ファイバによりサポートされる唯一の導波モードであり、かつdRE>dcであることを特徴とする請求項1の装置。
- 光ファイバにより波長λの放射の少なくとも1つの高次導波空間モードをサポートされ、かつ
前記dREは、前記コアの直径dc 以上であることを特徴とする請求項1の装置。 - 前記光ファイバは、レーザ光学キャビティを規定する屈折率グレーティングを有し、
前記複数の屈折率グレーティングは、少なくとも1つのモード結合屈折率グレーティングを含むことを特徴とする請求項3の装置。 - 前記モード結合屈折率グレーティングは、波長λの入射放射LP01の一部xをLP01放射として透過し、
前記入射放射LP01の残りの一部(1−x)を波長λの高次モード放射として反射することを特徴とする請求項4の装置。 - 前記少なくとも1つの高次導波空間モードは、LP11であり、
前記モード結合屈折率グレーティングは、グレーティングに入射する波長λのLP11放射の全てをLP01放射として反射することを特徴とする請求項4の装置。 - 前記少なくとも1つの高次導波空間モードは、LP02であり、
前記モード結合屈折率グレーティングは、グレーティングに入射する波長λのLP02放射の全てをLP01放射として反射することを特徴とする請求項4の装置。 - 前記光ファイバの長さは100m以下であることを特徴とする請求項1の装置。
- 前記装置は光ファイバ通信システムであり、該システムは、
送信器と、受信機と、前記送信器と受信機とを接続する光ファイバ伝送パスとを有し、
前記クラッド層ポンプファイバレーザが、前記光学伝送パスに光学的に結合され、クラッド層ポンプファイバレーザからの前記レーザ放射が光ファイバ伝送パス内で用いられることを特徴とする請求項1の装置。
