しかし、上記従来の元混合式面状火炎型バーナにおいては、加熱効率を高めるため、また、NOX の一層の削減を図るために空気過剰燃焼を推し進めると、燃焼板から僅かに、例えば0.5〜2mm程度離れて安定して形成されていた火炎が燃焼板から更に離れ、炎が一気に吹き消えることがあった。
