この発明は、上記の課題を解決するため、原動機4を搭載し前進走行可能に設けた走行車体1に甘藷の苗を圃場に植える苗植装置2を取付けた自走式の苗植機において、前記苗植装置2には開閉動作する左右一対の板で構成した植込み爪25を設けるとともに、該植込み爪25の先端部が、前記走行車体1の走行停止時にあって、圃場に突入して土中を浅く長く後方に進行したのち前後逆方向に折り返して前方上方に進行し土中から脱出するように機体側面視で非円形の軌道Bで上下に旋回する構成とし、且つ、該植込み爪25の先端部が、前記走行車体1の前進時に前記軌跡Bで上下に旋回しながら前方移動して前進軌跡B1をえがいて上下に旋回する時にあって、該植込み爪25の先端部が下降途中で閉じ動作して苗の基部を挟持しその苗挟持状態のままで圃場に突入して土中を浅く長く後方に進行し、その後、開き動作して苗を離し前後逆方向に折り返して前方上方に進行し土中から脱出するように動作する構成としたことを特徴とする苗植機とした。
