Description
グレーティングの製造方法に関し、特にこのようなグレ
ーティングを含む物品あるいはシステムに関する。
下、グレーティングと称する)は、多くの光ファイバ通
信システムの重要な構成部品の1つである。これらは水
素H2あるいは重水素D2 にさらされた光ファイバを
用意し、化学線放射(紫外線放射)にこの光ファイバを
露光するプロセスにより製造される。
O/GeO2 の比率が高いゲルマニウムシリケートガラ
ス製のファイバの製造方法を、またこのような光ファイ
バグレーティングとして用いられるファイバを開示して
いる。
な屈折率変動を有するグレーティングを製造するため
に、ゲルマニウムシリケート光ファイバを低温でH2
あるいはD2 にさらし、この光ファイバを化学線に露
光するプロセスを開示している。
ァイバ即ち、従来のポリマーコーティング層を取り除い
た光ファイバの一部に「書き込まれる」。このプロセス
は光ファイバを再度コーティングする必要がある。そし
てこの再コーティングプロセスは、時間がかかるのみな
らず、光ファイバのコーティング層を除去し、再度コー
ティングすることは光ファイバの強度を劣化させる。
折率グレーティングを書き込めることが望ましいことで
ある。同一出願人の米国特許第5620495号は、コ
ーティング層を介した書き込み技術について開示してい
る。しかし、少なくとも一部の光ファイバコーティング
は、程良い程度の紫外線露光の元では暗くなりすぎ、従
来の光ファイバのコアに大きな屈折率変化を生ぜしめる
ことはできない。

ティングの製造方法を提供することである。

しくは10倍以上)の感光性を有する光ファイバであ
る。ここで「感光性」とは、Δn/(化学線のドーズ
量)で定義され、ここでΔnは所定量の化学線に光ファ
イバを露光したことによる屈折率変化を表す。
C(Germanium-oxygen deficiency center)と称し、Ge
ドープのシリカの光屈折性の原因となる欠陥種である。
この欠陥種は、GeOあるいはGe2+とも称し、これに
関しては前掲の米国特許第5,157,747号および
R. M. Atkins, Optics Letters, Vol. 17(7), p. 469
(1992)を参照のこと。

ズドおよびアンブレイズドの両方を含む)および長周期
グレーティング(チャープおよび/またはブレイズドさ
れた)を意味する。後者の長周期グレーティングは、関
連放射波長λ(例、980nm)以上のΛのグレーティ
ング周期を有するものである。
ア内に高濃度のGODCを有するゲルマノシリケートフ
ァイバは、小量のドーズ量の化学線(通常紫外線)の露
光でも大きな屈折率変化Δnを達成できるという発見に
基づいている。
法により用意された比較用の光ファイバより比較してよ
り大きな(2倍以上の)感光性を有する。本発明による
光ファイバは、比較的高い感光性を有するため、コーテ
ィング層が暗化(darkening)される前にコーティング
された光ファイバに、比較的高いグレーティング(10
%ピーク屈折率)を書き込むことが可能となる。本明細
書における暗化等は、化学線の波長(通常、紫外線で例
えば242nm、248nm、257nm)における透
過率の減少を意味する。
ァイバとは、ゲルマノシリケートプリフォーム材料が、
プリフォーム材料内でGe4+からGe2+へ還元され
るような雰囲気、即ちGODCの形成が行われ易い雰囲
気と接触する高温熱処理ステップを含まないような方法
により用意されたプリフォームから引き抜かれた光ファ
イバを意味する。
バは、ゲルマノシリケートプリフォーム材料がGe4+か
らGe2+へ還元されるような雰囲気と接触して、その結
果光ファイバコア中のGODCレベルが高くなるような
高温熱処理用ステップを含む方法により用意されたプリ
フォームから引き抜かれ、感光剤にさらされたファイバ
である。さらに詳細な説明については、米国特許第5,
157,747号を参照のこと。本発明の実験によれ
ば、この高温熱処理ステップは、以下に詳述するような
雰囲気中でプリフォームチューブをコラップスする(潰
す)か、あるいは高温(例、1000−1500℃)の
プリフォームロッドをH2(またはD2)に長時間(例、
1〜24時間)さらすことを含む。
ODCの高レベルの存在は、前掲のOptics Letters の
論文中に開示されている方法により容易に決定できる。
現在好ましい方法は、240nmの波長の化学線の吸収
性の決定であり、これはコア中のGODCの濃度に正比
例するものである。
光ファイバは、240nm波長で約10dB/mm・モ
ル%Geの減衰を有するが(例、コア中に3モル%Ge
を含むファイバは、240nm波長で30dB/mmの
減衰量を示す)、これに対し本発明の光ファイバは、2
40nmでこの値の少なくとも2倍以上、好ましくは1
0倍以上の減衰量を示す。即ち本発明による光ファイバ
は、20dB/mm・モル%Geの減衰量を、好ましく
は100dB/mm・モル%Geの減衰量を有する。

このことは2回の感光モード間の従来の合成動作により
示唆されない驚くべき点である。本発明によれば、最大
の屈折率変化は、ある種の光ファイバにおいては、GO
DCレベルとは無関係であり、還元雰囲気に曝した量と
Geのドーピングレベルのみに依存する、そして高レベ
ルのGODCによってのみ得られる最大屈折率変化は比
較的小さい(H2 の還元雰囲気に曝して達成できたも
のに比較して)、通常10−4以下である。

開示し、コア中にGODCのレベルが増加した光ファイ
バは、従来の製造方法により用意された光ファイバに比
較して高いGODCレベルとなるような技術を開示して
いる。

温(例、2300℃)は、GODCの形成を促進し、こ

の方法は、例えばコラップスするときに用いられたとの
同一の還元雰囲気中でコラップスされたプリフォームを
少なくとも初期冷却することを含む。
酸素状態である必要はなく、O2 の量が十分低く(例、
10体積%以下)、還元状態を提供できるならば、少々
のO2 を含んでいてもよい。
イバの製造方法は次の通りである。プリフォームチュー
ブを従来法により形成する、これは Lucent Technologi
es社の標準の5D(登録商標)シングルモードファイバ
と同一方法により製造され、そして9層のフッ素ーリン
ーシリカ製(fluoro-phospho-silicate)クラッド層と
1層のゲルマノシリケートコア層とを有し、Δ+ =0.
43%となるようドーピングされている。このプリフォ
ームチューブを91体積%のHe,5体積%のCl,4
体積%のO2 からなる雰囲気中でコラップスした。無酸
素雰囲気を用いると幾分高いGODCの濃度を生成でき
る。コア中のGODCレベルを減らさないために、コラ
ップスの過程の途中で従来行われていた標準のコアのエ
ッチングを行わなかった。
ームの蛍光プロファイルによれば、標準の5Dファイバ
の約10倍のGODCレベルを示した。このことはこの
高いGODCを有するファイバは、240nmで400
dB/mmの減衰量を有し、これにより約3.2dBの
コア透過の(trans-core)減衰(8μmのコアに対し)
を与えることになる。標準の5Dファイバは、240n
mフォトンの入射の約7%を吸収し、一方高いGODC
を有する光ファイバは約52%のコア透過の(all tran
s-core)を吸収する。257nmでの吸収量は、240
nmでの吸収量の1/3である。
DCプリフォームから従来法により引き抜かれた。この
ようにして引き抜かれた光ファイバは標準の5Dファイ
バと類似するが、しかしGODCの密度は異なる。高G
ODCファイバと標準の5Dファイバをその後同一の感
光剤にさらす(D2 の雰囲気中で50℃で4日間)。

ーティングを同一の書き込み条件(40mW,5分,2
75nm)で、従来の位相グレーティングをもってファ
イバ中に書き込んだ。図1は、10mmグレーティング
長さに対する例を示し、図1の曲線11は、従来法によ
り生成された5Dファイバのグレーティングを表し、曲
線12は、還元雰囲気に曝した高GODCファイバ内の
グレーティングを表す。

し、後者(曲線12)は80%反射率のグレーティング

クのグレーティング反射率の値は、屈折率変調および感
光性に容易に変換できる。これに関しては、H. Patrick
et al.著の Optics Letters, Vol. 18(18), p.1884 (1
993)を参照のこと。

い。

タビライザーでも用いることができる。しかし、本発明
のグレーティングは、通信システムに限られるものでは
ない。グレーティングは、例えばファイバセンサ,歪セ
ンサ,温度センサ等にも用いることができる。
準連続的プロセスでもってグレーティングを容易に形成
できるようになる。例えばこの方法の一実施例を図4に
示す。同図において、高GODCファイバ55は、光フ
ァイバスプール56から巻き上げスプール57に位相グ
レーティング54の下を通過して送られる。所定のイン
ターバルで(2m間隔で)、送りが適当な時間(60
秒)停止し、グレーティングが光ファイバのコアに書き
込まれる。
光ファイバをレーザ51からの化学線52に露光し(適
宜ビーム調整装置53により調整され)、そして位相グ
レーティング54を通過する。その後ある長さのピグテ
ールを有する個々のグレーティングに分割されて接続さ
れる。このような連続的なプロセスによってコーティン
グ層を除去し、再度塗装することを回避することにより
コストの削減につながる。

- 【請求項1】(a) 還元雰囲気中でコラップスして形
成したプリフォームから、Geドープのコアを有するシ
リカベースの光ファイバ(55)を形成するステップ
と、 (b) 屈折率グレーティングが前記コア内に形成でき
るよう、前記光ファイバのコーティング層の上から化学
線(52)に露光するステップと、 を有すし、 ことを特徴とする光ファイバ屈折率グレーティングの製
造方法。 - 【請求項2】 前記光ファイバは、波長が240nmの
光に対し、コア内に含まれるGeのモル%当たり20d
B/mm以上の減衰率を有することを特徴とする請求項
1の方法。 - 【請求項3】 前記光ファイバのコーティング層は、ポ
リマーコーティングとガラス樹脂コーティングかなる群
から選択されたコーティングであることを特徴とする請
求項1の方法。 - 【請求項4】 前記(a)ステップにおいて、前記光フ
ァイバ(55)は、Ge4+からGe2+への還元雰囲
気中で加熱された光ファイバプリフォームロッドから引
き抜かれて形成されることを特徴とする請求項1の方
法。 - 【請求項5】 前記還元雰囲気は、10体積%以下のO
2 しか含有しないことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の
方法。 - 【請求項6】 前記還元雰囲気は、4体積%以下のO2
しか含有しないことを特徴とする請求項5の方法。 - 【請求項7】 前記光ファイバ屈折率グレーティング
は、ブラググレーティング及び長周期グレーティングか
らなる群から選択されたグレーティングであることを特
徴とする請求項1の方法。 - 【請求項8】 送信器(61)と受信機(62)と前記
送信器と受信機とを信号伝達が可能に接続する光ファイ
バ伝送パス(64)とを有する光ファイバ通信システム
(60)において、 前記伝送パス(64)は、約980nm波長のポンプ放
射を行うポンプレーザ(66)を含むエルビウムドープ
の光ファイバ増幅器(63)を有し、 前記ポンプ放射は、前記伝送パス(64)に光学的に接
続されたコーティングされた光ファイバ(65)に結合
され、 前記光ファイバ(65)は、請求項1に記載された方法
で製造された光ファイバ屈折率グレーティング(67)
を有し、 前記グレーティング(67)は、ポンプレーザ(66)
出力を安定化させることを特徴とする光ファイバ通信シ
