2. Description of the Related Art A large number of recording sheets stacked on a hopper of a printer are fed one by one from a top sheet by a sheet feeding roller provided at an upper portion of the hopper. At this time, in order to prevent the second and subsequent sheets from advancing along with the first sheet, a separation pad is usually provided opposite to the sheet feeding roller, and the second sheet is provided with the first sheet. When trying to advance between the paper feed roller and the separation pad together with the sheet, the frictional force of the separation pad prevents the second sheet from further moving. The first sheet at the top is separated from the second sheet and is subsequently fed by the sheet feed roller.

As described above, a large number of recording sheets stacked on the hopper of the printer are fed one by one by the sheet feeding roller sequentially from the uppermost sheet. However, the next paper is always separated from the paper feed roller from the time when the first paper is fed by the paper feed roller and sent to the printing section until the movement of the next paper by the paper feed roller starts. Since there is a slight bite between the pad and the pad, there is no problem if the printing operation is performed continuously for the next sheet. However, after completing the work on a series of paper, When taking out the hopper from the printer, for example, when replacing the paper, there is a problem that it is difficult to take out the paper that is caught between the paper feed roller and the separation pad.

Some media have different thicknesses on the right and left sides. However, since the left and right ends of the paper on the hopper are provided with depressions, the front end of the paper that comes into contact with the paper feed roller has a central portion and both side portions. As a result, the contact pressure on the paper feed roller becomes uniform, smooth paper feed is performed, and skew of the paper is prevented. In this case, a resilient flap may be provided inside the recess, and the height of the flap may be automatically changed according to the amount of paper loaded on the hopper. In this case, the height of the flap, that is, the height of the bottom of the hopper is automatically adjusted according to the amount of paper, and the paper always comes into contact with the paper feed roller at a constant pressure regardless of the amount of paper.

After the leading edge of the paper 2 is detected by the paper feed sensor 5, the paper 2 reaches the position of the transport roller 6 after a predetermined time, at which point the transport roller 5 rotates forward.
Then, the hopper 1 is lowered by a certain amount. The paper sensor 8 detects the leading edge of the paper 2 and determines at this time whether or not the trailing edge of the paper is out of the paper feed roller 3. If it is, the paper feed (pick) motor is stopped and the paper is conveyed. The paper is conveyed to the printing position by the roller 6 (that is, a line feed is started) and printing is started. If not, if the first sheet,
The paper feed roller 3 is driven intermittently to detect the paper length. When the driving of the paper feed roller 3 is stopped, for example, as shown in FIG. 4, the connection between the paper feed roller 3 and the paper feed (pick) motor 11 is disconnected to reduce the paper back load. In FIG. 4, 3 is a paper feed roller, 11 is a paper feed motor, 12 is a gear mounted on the shaft of the paper feed roller, and 13 is a gear mounted on the shaft of the paper feed motor.
By moving the intermediate gears 14, 14 'between the members 13 as shown by the arrow P in the figure, the connection between the paper feed roller 3 and the paper feed motor 11 can be connected or cut off.

When printing is completed for the paper, the paper is discharged. Such an operation is continuously performed for the required number of sheets (number of pages), and when printing is completed for all the number of pages (number of pages), if there is no next print command within a predetermined time (for example, 5 seconds), paper feeding is performed. The roller 3 is rotated in the reverse direction by a predetermined amount. The predetermined amount is a rotation amount sufficient for the next sheet caught between the sheet feeding roller 3 and the separation pad 4 to come off and return to the hopper 1.

FIG. 6 is a principle diagram showing the function of the hopper, and FIGS. 7 to 9 show embodiments of the hopper. In general, if the paper 2 is deformed and the thickness of the stacked paper is different on the left and right sides, the paper feed roller 3 may hit against the paper 2, causing a pick error, that is, a paper feed failure and skew. However, in the present invention, as shown in FIG. 6, by providing the hollow portions 20 on the left and right sides of the thick end of the stacked paper, that is, the front end of the paper mounting area of the hopper 1, the paper 2
The paper feed roller 3 is made to uniformly contact the paper 2 so that the paper can be stably fed.

In the embodiment shown in FIG. 7, a flap 21 having elasticity is provided inside the recess 20. When the amount of paper loaded on the hopper 1 is large (ie, heavy), the load applied to the flap 21 is large. Largely, the flap 21 is deformed further downward to increase the amount of depression. When the amount of loaded paper is small, the load applied to the flap 21 is small, the downward deformation of the flap 21 is reduced, and the amount of depression is reduced. I made it smaller. Thus, regardless of the amount of paper loaded,
Can contact the paper 2 uniformly.
