Description
ガラス媒体の屈折率における輻射線誘起屈折率変化を使
用する光素子及びその作製方法に関する。
ために、ゲルマニウム・ドーピング珪酸塩やガンマ線照
射珪酸塩、ユーロピウム・ドーピング・ガラスのような
ガラス媒体に高強度輻射線を照射することが知られてい
る。この現象は様々な光素子への用途を持っている。例
えば、光素子中にブラッグ位相格子を誘起するために、
紫外線ビームの干渉が用いられており、そのような紫外
線誘起格子が光ファイバ・レーザ、光フィルタ、偏光コ
ンバータ、モード・コンバータ及び光ファイバ・センサ
ーに使用されてきている。他の利用可能な用途に光メモ
リの製造がある。
配備する際の傷害は、それらの長期信頼性に関しては殆
ど知られていないことである。海底ケーブルのための光
ファイバ・レーザのような幾つかの用途では、長期間に
渡って高い性能裕度が要求される。同様に幾つかの用途
では、高温での動作が必要であり、更に環境ストレスの
恐れを有する。従って、そのような光素子を確実な信頼
性を持つものにする必要がある。
による輻射線誘起屈折率変化に対する熱老化を表わして
いる関係及び加速エージングによって安定化を可能にす
るメカニズムの発見に基づいている。実験では、その輻
射線誘起屈折率変化は
数であり、上記老化を熱処理によって加速することがで
きる。その結果、老化の程度は任意の時間及び温度につ
いて決定することが可能であり、重要な点として、所定
の限度内で安定な光素子を作製するために適切な熱処理
を計画に組み入れることが可能である。
製するステップを示し工程図である。図1のブロックA
に示すように、最初のステップでは、ゲルマニウム・ド
ーピング珪酸塩のような紫外線感光性ガラス媒体を準備
する。このガラス媒体は、その所期の動作に必要な他の
ドーパントを含有することができる利点がある。例え
ば、光ファイバ・レーザを作製する場合、このガラス媒
体には、14モル%のゲルマニウム及び600ppmの
エルビウムが、濃縮消失効果を極少にする為に加えられ
るアルミニウムと共にドーピングされた珪酸塩ガラス・
コアを有する通例のクラッド・ガラス・ファイバを用い
ることができる。被覆クラッディングが付加された後、
このクラッド・ガラス・ファイバは、全て従来技術で周
知な方法で、880nmのカットオフ波長に対応する
2.6μmのコア径に延伸される。
は、そのガラス媒体の一部に紫外線露光を行ない、局部
的な屈折率変化を生じさせる。その露光の度合いは、位
相マスクを使用するか或いは干渉ビームを使用して露光
時間を変えることによって空間的に変化させることがで
きる。例えば、紫外線の干渉ビームに露光させることに
よってそのガラス媒体中に1つ以上のブラッグ位相格子
を誘起することができる。高強度の干渉紫外線レーザ・
ビームは局部的ビーム強度に直接関係付けられた局部屈
折率の変化を生じさせる。従って、この干渉ビームは干
渉ピーク間の間隔に対応する間隔を有する屈折率変化パ
ターンを生じさせる。これらの周期的変化はそこへ入射
する光に対しブラッグ格子として作用することができ
る。
に説明したガラス・ファイバ10の端面上に2本の紫外
線ビーム(242nm波長)を干渉させることによって
そのガラス・ファイバのコア13内に形成された。尚、
コア13の外周にクラッド層14が形成されている。そ
の紫外線は、15ns(ナノ秒)のパルスを30Hzの
繰り返し速度で生ずるXeFエキシマ・レーザによって
励起される色素レーザを周波数逓倍することによって発
光された。それら干渉ビームは上記ガラス・ファイバ上
にほぼガウス時平均プロフィールを持つ、6mmの長径
と50μmの短径を持つ大きさのスポットに集束され
た。その平均電力は15乃至20mWとされ、そのガラ
ス・ファイバ10は上記格子が90%のピーク反射率に
達するまで露光された(なお、代表的な露光時間は30
秒から60秒の間である)。この場合の紫外線誘起屈折
率変化のピーク値は2×10ー 4であると概算された。
は、上記光素子が上記誘起屈折率変化中に僅かδnopの
損失で動作温度Topで時間topの間動作するように、露
光された上記ガラス媒体をアニーリング温度Tanでアニ
ーリング時間tanの間加熱する。誘起された上記屈折率
Δnの老化は
れるので、所定の条件に適合させることが可能な状態に
上記光素子をエージングすることが必ずできる。このこ
とは、[数5]に比例する曲線をプロットした図3を参
照することによって理解することができる。この図3の
実験データは上記誘起屈折率の初期の大きさの98%か
ら35%の範囲の誘起屈折率に渡って採取されたもので
ある。図3から分かるように、単位時間当たりの老化の
量は時間の増加と共に減少する。更に、エージングは動
作温度Topより高いアニーリング温度Tan(即ち、Tan
>Top)を使用することによって加速させることがで
きるので、必要なエージングが稼働期間topより極めて
短いアニーリング時間tanで達成されるようにすること
ができる。即ち、アニーリング時間tanを動作時間top
の10%かそれ以下に相当短くすることができる。適切
なアニーリング時間及びアニーリング温度を計算するた
めのアルゴリズムは後でパートIIで述べ、観測された
挙動を説明する物理モデルをパートIIIでのべる。要
約すると、上記光素子は、図3の曲線上の時点t1で
は、時点t1と時点t1 + topとの間の老化が必要な性
能裕度未満となるように、熱処理される。
外線誘起屈折率変化Δniが[数5]に比例して老化す
ることとなることを確かめた。なお、この比例項におい
てAは動作温度Topの関数である老化前因子であり、同
様にαは動作温度Topの関数である老化定数である。発
明者らは更に、この老化モデルを用いて、今や或る動作
温度Topで所定の稼働期間topの間、上記光素子を所定
の屈折率変化δnop以内に維持する運用前熱処理の過程
を規定することができることに気付いた。

化を時間の関数として簡略に示すグラフである図3を参
照することによって理解することができる。もし、t1
が、光素子の動作が始まる時点であれば、t1 + top
は上記光素子がその事前に評定された動作寿命を終える
時点である。もしΔnopが時点t1での誘起屈折率変化
であれば、上記屈折率がその動作寿命中δnop以上には
老化しないためには、Δnが時点t1 + topでΔnop
− δnop以上であることが必要とされる。
な長時間であるかも知れないが、発明者らは更に加速エ
ージングが可能であること、即ち、動作温度Topより高
い温度Tan(即ち、Tan > Top)で、稼働期間topよ
り極めて短い時間tan(即ち、tan << t1)の間上
記光素子を処理することによって光素子の安定性を確実
にするために同等の効果を達成することができることを
発見した。
設計者が直面する問題は、次の如く説明することができ
る。即ち、「動作温度Topで少なくともtopの稼働期間
の間に渡って光素子を使用することができるためにはそ
の光素子をどのように処理すればよいかの問題」、「上
記光素子は、紫外線誘起屈折率変化がtopの間に渡りδ
nop以上には老化しないことが必要である問題」、「特
に、所望の結果を生み出すアニーリング時間tan及びア
ニーリング温度Tanの各範囲はどのような範囲であるか
の問題」が有る。
得るためには、少なくとも2つの温度、例えばT1及び
T2について実験的な老化曲線をプロットし、それら観
測された曲線を
曲線当て嵌め手法によって計算しなければならない。老
化が事前に評定される動作温度Topより高い温度T1及
びT2を選ぶことによってパラメータA及びαを迅速に
求めることができる利点がある。動作温度Topに対応す
るそれらパラメータA及びαは次の各関係式によって容
易に計算することができる。即ち、

な老化を生じるように規定することができる。具体的に
は、Tan及びtanの任意の組み合わせを使用して次の等
式を解くことができる。

ウム光ファイバ・レーザの具体例に適用するには、その
ようなレーザが経済性が支配する海底ケーブルでの単一
モード・レーザとして熟慮され、それらが多年に渡って
サービス無しで動作しなければならないことに留意する
必要がある。上記紫外線誘起屈折率変化が僅か7%低下
するだけで、そのようなレーザが単一モード動作からそ
のケーブル・システムに深刻な結果をもたらす多モード
動作へ変わることがある。
を、300Kでの100年の老化と等価な量だけエージ
ングするために種々の温度で必要とされる時間をプロッ
トしたグラフである。そのようなエージング後、300
Kでの次の100年間の屈折率の低下は1%未満になる
ものと思われる。
バ・レーザを120℃で48時間アニーリングし、続い
て100℃で1800時間動作させた(これは65℃で
50年間の動作に対応する)。その結果、この光ファイ
バ・レーザはその時間中、2重モード動作以上のモード
跳躍の兆候を示さなかった。
ル 本発明の必須要件ではないが、発明者らの最新の考えで
は、紫外線感光性ガラス中で電子が感光性欠陥部からの
紫外線によって励起される。続いて、これら励起された
電子が単一のトラップ・レベルと言うより、むしろ連続
的に分布したエネルギー・レベルにトラップされる。そ
の連続的に分布したエネルギー・レベルの中の1つのエ
ネルギー・レベルから熱励起によって電子がトラップか
ら解放される率は、その熱励起の温度及びトラップ状態
の深さに依存している。熱的にそれらトラップから解放
されると、電子は紫外線励起の前に塞がれていた元の深
いエネルギー・レベルに再び分布する。
ルギー・レベル分布は分界点エネルギーEdによって分
割された2つのグループに分離される。E < Edであ
る第1のグループは、E = 0より高い伝導状態を持つ
熱平衡になっている。E > Edである第2のグループ
は、時点tまで非常に深く熱的に励起されていたもので
ある。
な分界点エネルギーEdが存在する。僅かな誘起屈折率
変化を除去することは、Edより高いエネルギーを持つ
トラップを非変化状態に残したままで、Edより低いエ
ネルギーを持つトラップを熱処理で空にすることに相当
する。
変化が老化する速度を制御することができる。同様に、
或る所定の温度での老化の進行は、時間が進行するとと
もに遅くなっていく。従って、加速エージングには温度
を高くすることによって急速な老化を誘起し、続いて、
その老化の過程がそれ以上の老化が十分遅くなっている
時点に進行すると、温度を低くする。従って、アニーリ
ングし、その光素子の動作寿命に渡って相当な量の老化
を引き起こすこととなる不安定なトラップ状態を一掃
し、更にその光素子の所定の寿命に渡って誘起屈折率変
化の老化を単に遅くさせる上記安定なトラップ状態のみ
を保持することによって、光素子を安定化させることが
できる。
掛かり合い この物理モデルは光素子安定化のための一般的な手順を
規定し、老化が独立した活性化エネルギーの分布によっ
て支配される場合は何時でも適用することができる。定
義によって、活性化エネルギーEを持つ活性プロセスが
νoexp(−E/kT)の率で起きる。ここで、Tは
温度であり、kはボルツマン定数である。その結果、そ
の試みの頻度νoは代表的には極めて速く、原子プロセ
スに対して1010乃至1016sec-1の範囲である。従
って、上記速度が1/tに等しいときの分界点エネルギ
ーEdは、単にEd = kTLn(νot)で与えられ
る。この手順は、塞がれたトラップの残留原子数が初期
にE > Edのグループでもたらされた数であり、従っ
てEdにのみ依存し、そのEdを生じさせる温度T及び時
間tの特定の組み合わせには依存しないことに根拠を置
いている。

められる。これら求められた老化は十分な継続期間を持
ち、且つ、それらが共に或る値のΔn(t)を持つ温度
に十分に近いものでなければならない。

度T1での老化がΔnrefに達する時点t1、及び、温度
T2での老化に対する対応する時点t2が、kT1Ln
(νot1) = kT2Ln(νot2)の関係を持つ。従
ってνoの値は[数3]で求められる。

ろう。なお、ここで、Ed = kTLn(νot)であ
る。この断定の精度は、Δnの他の値或いは他の温度で
のデータを比較することによって確かめることができ
る。
その寿命中における老化は、Eop= kTopLn(νot
op)であるエネルギーEopにおいて、Δn = f
(Eop)から決定することができる。所望の寿命は代表
的には実験によってアクセスすることができるものより
遥かに長いので、この断定に関するデータは、通常、よ
り短い時間、但しそれに対応して高い温度でのデータか
ら得られることとなる。

表わすことができる。なお、等価アニーリング時間teq
は、kTanLn(νotan) = kTopLn(νoteq)
の関係を満たし、従って、
Topを超えるアニーリング温度Tanが僅か上昇するだけ
でも極めて長い等価アニーリング時間teqが得られる。
従って、このアニーリング条件は次の関係、即ち、
が有る。即ち、ガラス媒体中でのの紫外線誘起屈折率変
化を使用する光素子は、(1)事前に評定された動作温
度で事前に評定されたアニーリング時間の間に更に為さ
れるエージングによって誘起屈折率変化の特定のレベル
を超える老化が生じなくなる条件にその光素子を合わせ
るために必要なエージングの量を決定し、且つ、(2)
その光素子を動作の前にその光素子をその求められた条
件に合わせるのに十分な時間の間上記動作温度より高い
温度で前以てアニーリングすることにより、特定のレベ
ルを超える老化に抗して安定化させることができる。
間topの間に渡ってδnop未満の誘起屈折率変化の老化
を持ってその稼働期間topの間最高動作温度Topで動作
するように設計される場合、その光素子を、(1)ガラ
ス媒体を準備し、(2)そのガラス媒体を紫外線に露光
させて屈折率変化を誘起させ、(3)動作温度Topでの
そのガラス媒体中の誘起屈折率変化の老化特性曲線を決
定し、(4)その老化特性曲線上の、稼働期間topの経
過によってδn未満の老化が生じるようになる点Pを調
べ、(5)動作温度Topより高いアニーリング温度Tan
(即ち、Tan> Top)で上記老化特性曲線上の点Pに
対応する稼働期間topより短いアニーリング時間t
an(即ち、tan < top)の間、そのガラス媒体を加熱
することによって、作製することができる。

Claims (5)
- 【請求項1】動作温度Topにおいて稼働期間topにわた
る輻射線誘起屈折率変化の老化がδnop未満となるよう
に、光素子のガラス媒体において時間とともに老化する
輻射線誘起屈折率変化を安定化させる光素子の安定化方
法であって、前記ガラス媒体は前記動作温度Topにおい
て時間の関数としての前記誘起屈折率変化の老化特性曲
線を有し、 前記稼働期間topの間の前記輻射線誘起屈折率変化の老
化がδnop未満となるように、1/(1+Aitα)に
比例する輻射線誘起屈折率変化の前記老化特性曲線上に
おける輻射線誘起屈折率変化の値Δnop を決定するス
テップと、 前記動作温度Topを超えるアニーリング温度Tanで、前
記稼働期間top未満のアニーリング時間tanの間、前記
ガラス媒体を加熱することにより、この加熱ステップの
終了時における前記ガラス媒体の前記誘起屈折率変化が
Δnop となるようにするステップと、 を備えたことを特徴とする光素子の安定化方法。 - 【請求項2】T1>Topなる第1の温度T1とT2>Top
なる第2の温度T2とを含む少なくとも2つの温度につ
いて前記ガラス媒体の前記老化特性曲線を決定し、T1
とT2のそれぞれにおける前記老化特性曲線からTopに
おける前記輻射線誘起屈折率変化の老化特性曲線を推定
することによって、動作温度Topにおける前記輻射線誘
起屈折率変化の老化特性曲線を実験的に決定することを
特徴とする請求項1記載の方法。 - 【請求項3】前記ガラス媒体における前記輻射線誘起屈
折率変化は、前記ガラス媒体を紫外線に露光することに
より誘起されることを特徴とする請求項1記載の方法。 - 【請求項4】前記光素子は、光ファイバ・レーザを含む
ことを特徴とする請求項1記載の方法。 - 【請求項5】前記光素子は、光フィルタを含むことを特
徴とする請求項1記載の方法。
