Description
り、特に半導体レーザとモノリシック集積化が可能な光
導波路型集積型光アイソレータに関する。
イバの通信用光源として広く用いられている。しかしな
がら、従来の半導体レーザでは、光ファイバからの極僅
かの反射戻り光により、半導体レーザ内部で雑音を生じ
るという問題があった。そのため、半導体レーザへの反
射戻り光を除去するための光学部品として光アイソレー
タが不可欠となる。
を示す磁気光学結晶を、透過の偏光方向が45度ずれた
2つの偏光子で挟む構成が一般的に用いられている。こ
の構成の従来の光アイソレータでは、半導体レーザから
出射された光は、第1の偏光子を透過して磁気光学結晶
に入射し、ここで所定方向に45度偏光面が回転された
後、減衰を受けることなくそのまま第2の偏光子を透過
する。一方、反射戻り光は、第2の偏光子を透過して磁
気光学結晶に入射し、ここで45度偏光面が上記所定方
向と反対方向に回転されることにより第1の偏光子とは
偏光面が90度異なるようにされるため、第1の偏光子
により遮断され半導体レーザへの入射が防止される。
の光アイソレータは、磁石を含め最小でも4つの部品よ
り構成されているため、材料の加工や組み立てに多数の
工数を要し、高価であり、信頼性や安定性に乏しいとい
う問題がある。しかも上記の従来の光アイソレータは、
半導体レーザとモノリシックに集積化することが困難で
ある。
信頼性や安定性の高い光アイソレータを提供することを
目的とする。

に繰り返す動的な回折格子を形成し、動的な回折格子に
より媒体への入射光と入射光と反対方向から媒体へ入射
する戻り光との間に伝搬損失差を生じさせるように構成
したものである。
原理説明図を示す。ある周波数f0の光波が、相対速度
vで移動している回折格子に入射する場合、図1(a)
に示すように、回折格子1が入射光2の伝搬方向と同じ
方向に相対速度vで移動する場合は、ドップラ効果によ
り回折格子1から見た光波の周波数がf0よりも低いf
1(=f0(1−(v/c)))になる。ここで、cは
自由空間における光の速度である。
1が入射光4の伝搬方向と反対方向に相対速度vで移動
する場合は、ドップラ効果により回折格子1から見た光
波の周波数がf0よりも高いf2(=f0(1+(v/
c)))になる。従って、回折格子1のピッチを周波数
f1の光波のみを透過するように設計することにより、
図1(a)の場合は回折格子1から出射光3が取り出さ
れるが、図1(b)の場合は回折格子1により反射され
る。このため、光を透過できる媒体内に屈折率分布が周
期的に繰り返す回折格子1を形成し、これを空間的に移
動してドップラ効果を利用することにより、光アイソレ
ータとして機能させることができる。

電極7及び8を進行電圧波12の伝送線路として利用す
る。

うに、異なる屈折率分布の領域が円周方向に周期的に形
成されている。このガラス媒体15は中心部に中心軸1

射される。また、戻り光19はこのガラス媒体15を透
過できないようにできる。

0を得るためには、前記式f1=f0(1−(v/
c))、f2=f0(1+(v/c))から1.5×1
05m/s以上の回折格子の移動速度vが必要である。
従って、この場合ガラス媒体15の半径を10mmとす
ると、回転速度は約2.4×106/s(=1.5×1
05/(2×π×10×10-3))となる。

15は同一回転速度であっても、その半径位置により線
速度が異なるから、入射光17のガラス媒体15への入
射位置により回折格子の移動速度vが変化するため、入
射光17のガラス媒体15への入射位置を変えることに
より、透過できる光波の周波数を変えることができる。

の非相反光効果を有する材料や磁石等を用いることなく
光アイソレータを実現することができる。

長系半導体レーザとモノリシックに集積化できるInP
を材質とする基板21上にInGaAsP四元層を0.
2μm成長し、通常のフォトリソグラフィーとエッチン
グにより、3μm幅のリッジストライプ状の光導波路2
2を形成する。更に、その脇をInPにより埋め込み成
長する。その後、四元リッジストライプ状光導波路22
の両側に電極23及び24を蒸着する。
き特性インピーダンスZmは約50Ωとなる。勿論、素
子の長さLを長くすればするほど、大きなアイソレーシ
ョン特性が得られるが、導波路損失は大きくなる。そこ
で、図5の実施の形態では、電極23及び24の終端に
特性インピーダンスZmとマッチングさせる50Ωの終
端インピーダンス25を接続する。また、電極23及び
24の反対側端部には、抵抗26及び高周波電圧源27
を直列に接続する。
共に説明した動作原理により、高周波電圧源27(図2
の10に相当)からの高周波電圧が印加される電極23
及び24(図2の電極7及び8に相当)の入射端から終
端への進行波電圧だけが得られ、光導波路22中に材料
の屈折率変化による波が高速度で移動するような動的な
回折格子を光導波路22上に形成できる。これにより、
光導波路22の入射端に周波数f0の光波を入射した場
合、ドップラ効果を利用して所定の周波数f1の光波の
みを透過させ、所定の周波数f2の戻り光を遮断でき
る。

ので、上記の周波数f1とf2は各々0.61 f0と1.
39f0となる。この場合、波長1.3μmの入射光に
対して、周波数f1の光が通過でき、周波数f2の光を遮
断するような動的回折格子のピッチは約1500Åであ
る。従って、高周波電圧源27から出力される注入進行
電圧波の周波数は、7×1014Hzに設定される。
常の半導体材料を用いるだけで、従来の磁気光学効果等
の非相反光効果を有する材料や磁石等を用いることなく
光アイソレータを実現することができる。また、半導体
レーザとモノリシックに集積化することができるので、
光アイソレータを必要とする光モジュールのコストを大
幅に低減することができる。
帯の光に対して動作する例を示したが、高周波電圧源2
7の周波数を調整することにより、波長1.5μm帯の
半導体レーザとモノリシックに集積化できる光アイソレ
ータを実現することもできる。

第3の実施の形態の構成図、図6(B)はこの第3の実
施の形態の動作説明図を示す。図6(A)に示すよう
に、この第3の実施の形態の光アイソレータは、LiI
O3ゃLiNbO3のような音響光学特性を有する媒質に
よる光導波路31を基板30上に形成し、その光導波路
31表面にくし形電極32を形成し、このくし形電極3
2に図示しない高周波電圧源から高周波電圧を印加する
構成である。
より図6(b)に示すように、音響光学媒体である光導
波路22内に進行超音波33が誘起され、屈折率が一定
方向に周期的に変化され、一定方向に移動する動的な回
折格子を光導波路31に形成することができる。

通常の半導体材料を用いるだけで、従来の磁気光学効果
等の非相反光効果を有する材料や磁石等を用いることな
く光アイソレータを実現することができる。
光透過媒体あるいは光導波路に動的な回折格子を形成
し、ドップラ効果を利用して入射光と入射光と反対方向
から入射する戻り光との間に伝搬損失差を生じさせるよ
うにしたため、通常の半導体材料を用いるだけで、従来
の磁気光学効果等の非相反光効果を有する材料や磁石等
を用いることなく、安価に光アイソレータを構成するこ
とができると共に、信頼性や安定性を向上することがで
きる。

Claims (4)
- 【請求項1】 光を透過する媒体内に屈折率分布が周期
的に繰り返す動的な回折格子を形成し、該動的な回折格
子により該媒体への入射光と該入射光と反対方向から該
媒体へ入射する戻り光との間に伝搬損失差を生じさせる
ように構成したことを特徴とする光アイソレータ。 - 【請求項2】 周期的な屈折率分布が円周方向に形成さ
れた円柱状の光透過媒体と、 前記光透過媒体を回転する回転手段とを有し、前記光透
過媒体の側面に入射光を入射するように構成したことを
特徴とする光アイソレータ。 - 【請求項3】 少なくとも光を導波することが可能な光
導波路内に、一定方向に進行する周期的な屈折率分布の
波の回折格子を形成する手段を有し、該光導波路への入
射光と該入射光と反対方向から該光導波路へ入射する戻
り光との間に伝搬損失差を生じさせるように構成したこ
とを特徴とする光アイソレータ。 - 【請求項4】 音響光学特性を有する光導波路と、 前記光導波路の表面に形成されたくし形電極と、 前記くし形電極に高周波電圧を印加して前記光導波路に

進行する回折格子を前記光導波路に形成させる電圧源と
