Abstract
Description

一例において、光変調層としては、前記液晶層が適用可能である。液晶層は、液晶化合物を含む層である。本明細書において用語「液晶層」の範囲には、液晶化合物を含んでいる層が全部含まれ、例えば、液晶化合物(液晶ホスト)と二色性染料を含むいわゆるゲストホスト層やキラルドーパントなどその他添加剤を液晶化合物と共に含む層も、本明細書において規定する液晶層の一種である。前記液晶層は、外部シグナルの印加の有無によって配向方向が変わるように形成された液晶化合物を含んでもよい。液晶化合物としては、外部シグナルの印加によってその配向方向が変更されうるものであれば、すべての種類の液晶化合物が使用できる。例えば、液晶化合物としては、スメクチック(smectic)液晶化合物、ネマチック(nematic)液晶化合物またはコレステリック(cholesteric)液晶化合物などが使用できる。また、外部シグナルの印加によってその配向方向が変更されうるように、液晶化合物は、例えば重合性基または架橋性基を有しない化合物であるか、有するとしても、重合および架橋されない状態で存在する化合物でありうる。

このような化合物は、シリコーン粘着剤層または接着剤層の表面特性などを制御して液晶化合物の配向を効果的に形成および維持でき、このような配向が高温条件でも安定的に維持されるようにすることができる。

実施例または比較例で製造された光変調デバイスに対して透過率T1およびT2を測定した。測定に適用された光変調デバイスは、第1および第2基板の第2表面にPVA(poly(vinyl alcohol))偏光層を付着する前のデバイスである。また、実施例または比較例の光変調デバイスは、初期配向が垂直配向になるように構成したデバイスであるから、別途の電源を印加せず、透過率T1およびT2を測定した。
フィルムの面内位相差値(Rin)は、Agilent社のUV/VIS spectroscope 8453装備を利用して波長550nmの光に対して測定した。UV/VIS spectroscopeに2枚の偏光子を透過軸が互いに直交するように設置し、前記2枚の偏光子の間に高分子フィルムの遅相軸が2枚の偏光子の透過軸とそれぞれ45度を成すように設置した後、波長による透過度を測定した。波長による透過度グラフにおいて各ピーク(peak)の位相遅延次数(Phase retardation order)を求める。具体的に、波長による透過度グラフにおいて、波形は、下記数式Aを満たし、サイン(Sine)波形で最大ピークTmaxの条件は、下記数式Bを満たす。数式Aで、λmaxである場合、数式AのTと数式BのTは、同一なので、数式を展開する。n+1、n+2およびn+3に対しても数式を展開し、nとn+1数式を整理してRを消去してnをλnおよびλn+1数式で整理すると、下記数式Cが導き出される。数式AのTと数式BのTが同一であることに基づいてnとλを知ることができるので、各λn、λn+1、λn+2およびλn+3に対してRを求める。4ポイントに対して波長によるR値の直線傾向線を求め、数式550nmに対するR値を算定する。直線傾向線の関数は、Y=ax+bであり、aおよびbは、定数である。前記関数のxに550nmを代入したときのY値が波長550nmの光に対するRin値である。

液晶層とシリコーン粘着剤層の厚さは、測定装備(F20、Filmetric社製)を使用して確認した。前記で液晶層の厚さは、cell gapであり、スペーサーの高さを通じて確認した。
光変調デバイスの製造
光変調デバイスの第1基板として、一面にITO(Indium Tin Oxide)電極層が蒸着されている厚さ145μm程度のPET(poly(ethylene terephthalate))フィルム(SKC、高延伸PET製品)を使用した。前記PETフィルムの面内位相差(550nm)は、略10,000nm程度であった。前記PETフィルムのITO電極層の表面にシリコーン粘着剤層を形成した。

シリコーン粘着剤層の厚さを約10μm程度で形成したことを除いては、実施例1と同一に光変調デバイスを製作した。
数式2のA値が約0.125になるように化学式Aの化合物の比率を調節し、シリコーン粘着剤層の厚さが約6μm程度になるようにしたことを除いては、実施例1と同一に光変調デバイスを製作した。
化学式Aの化合物の代わりに化学式Bの化合物を適用し、数式2のA値が約0.15になるように前記化学式Bの化合物の比率を調節し、シリコーン粘着剤層の厚さが約8μm程度になるようにしたことを除いては、実施例1と同一に光変調デバイスを製作した。
化学式Aの化合物の代わりに化学式Cの化合物を適用し、数式2のA値が約0.15になるように前記化学式Cの化合物の比率を調節し、シリコーン粘着剤層の厚さが約4μm程度になるようにしたことを除いては、実施例1と同一に光変調デバイスを製作した。
化学式Aの化合物の代わりに比較例1の化学式Cの化合物を適用し、数式2のA値が約0.15になるように前記化学式Cの化合物の比率を調節し、シリコーン粘着剤層の厚さが約15μm程度になるようにしたことを除いては、実施例1と同一に光変調デバイスを製作した。
化学式Aの化合物の代わりに化学式Dの化合物を適用し、シリコーン粘着剤層の厚さが約5μm程度になるようにしたことを除いては、実施例1と同一に光変調デバイスを製作した。
化学式Aの化合物の代わりに比較例3の化学式Dの化合物を適用し、シリコーン粘着剤層の厚さが約12μm程度になるようにしたことを除いては、実施例1と同一に光変調デバイスを製作した。
化学式Aの化合物の代わりに化学式Eの化合物を適用し、シリコーン粘着剤層の厚さが約3.6μm程度になるようにしたことを除いては、実施例1と同一に光変調デバイスを製作した。
化学式Aの化合物の代わりに比較例5の化学式Eの化合物を適用し、シリコーン粘着剤層の厚さが約14μm程度になるようにしたことを除いては、実施例1と同一に光変調デバイスを製作した。
Claims (19)
- それぞれ第1表面と第2表面を有し、相互の第1表面が対向するように対向配置されている第1基板および第2基板と、
前記第1基板および前記第2基板の間に存在する液晶層と、を含み、
下記式1を満たす光変調デバイス:

式1で、T1は、前記液晶層を垂直配向させ、直交偏光子の間に位置させた後に測定した初期透過率であり、T2は、前記T1の透過率を示す前記液晶層を垂直配向させた状態で100℃で5分維持した後に、前記直交偏光子の間に位置させた後に測定した透過率である。 - 透過率T2が2%以下である、請求項1に記載の光変調デバイス。
- 前記液晶層は、垂直配向状態およびツイスト配向状態をスイッチングできるように形成されている、請求項1から3のいずれか一項に記載の光変調デバイス。
- 化学式1で、R1~R3のうちいずれか一つは、水素原子であり、残りの二つは、アルキル基である、請求項3に記載の光変調デバイス。
- 化学式1で、R1~R3のうちいずれか一つは、水素原子であり、残りの二つは、炭素数1~20の直鎖状アルキル基である、請求項3に記載の光変調デバイス。
- 化学式1の置換基を3個以上有する化合物は、前記化学式1の置換基を3個~10個含む、請求項3、5または6のいずれか一項に記載の光変調デバイス。
- 前記シリコーン粘着剤層または前記接着剤層は、化学式1の置換基を3個以上有する化合物を1~50重量%の比率で含む、請求項3、5、6、7または8のいずれか一項に記載の光変調デバイス。
- 下記数式1によるK値が2μm以上である、請求項3、5、6、7、8または9のいずれか一項に記載の光変調デバイス:

数式2で、Sは、前記シリコーン粘着剤層または前記接着剤層に含まれた化学式1の置換基を3個以上有する化合物の重さであり、Oは、前記化学式1の置換基を3個以上有する化合物を除いた前記シリコーン粘着剤層または前記接着剤層の重さである。 - 数式1のAが0.01~0.5の範囲内にある、請求項10に記載の光変調デバイス。
- 数式1のDが0.5~50μmの範囲内にある、請求項10または11に記載の光変調デバイス。
- 前記第1基板には液晶配向膜が形成されていない、請求項1から12のいずれか一項に記載の光変調デバイス。
- 前記第2基板の前記第1表面には液晶配向膜が形成されている、請求項1から13のいずれか一項に記載の光変調デバイス。
- 前記第1基板または前記第2基板は、波長550nmの光に対する面内位相差が500nm以上である、請求項1から14のいずれか一項に記載の光変調デバイス。
- 前記第1基板または前記第2基板の前記第2表面上に配置された偏光層をさらに含む、請求項1から15のいずれか一項に記載の光変調デバイス。
- 前記第1基板または前記第2基板と液晶層の間に存在し、下記数式3を満たす光学異方性フィルムをさらに含む、請求項1から16のいずれか一項に記載の光変調デバイス:
