憩室症は、結腸壁に沿って形成される嚢（憩室）に関する。該嚢は、一般的に直径５〜１０ｍｍであり、６０歳以上の個人のおよそ５０％に形成される。
憩室症の病因はよくわかっていない。現在の学説は、観測される文化間の栄養上の違いに注目している。高繊維食を食する文化（例えば、アジア及びアフリカ）では、憩室症の罹病率が非常に低く、低繊維食を食する文化（例えば、アメリカ及びヨーロッパ）では、憩室症の罹病率が高い。ある内科医は、低繊維食を食する人の結腸は、老廃物を該結腸内に通過させるために通常よりも高い圧力を働かせる必要があると考えている。その比較的高い圧力により、腸壁の筋層において血管が通っている結腸内の弱い部分が変形し、それによって嚢が形成される。
多くの場合において、憩室症は、その状態のみでは症状が出ないため、発見されないままとなる。憩室症は、一般的に、患者が痛みを伴う憩室性疾患または憩室炎のような併発症を体験した後に診断される。他の場合には、スクリーニング検査（例えば、結腸内視鏡検査）の際に発見される。
憩室症は、通常、栄養指針及び薬物治療の組み合わせにより治療される。患者は、１日に３０〜３５ｇの繊維の消費を目標として高繊維食を摂取する食事療法に従ってもよい。消化管の周囲の筋肉を弛緩させるために抗痙攣薬を処方してもよい。憩室炎または他の憩室症の併発症が起こっている箇所には、鎮痛剤を投与してもよい。
憩室症の治療に用いられ得る、さらなる組成物及び方法のための技術が求められている。これが本発明の目的である。

Ｌ−グルタミン、その塩、誘導体または混合物は、あらゆる適切な方法により投与されてもよい。例えば、所定の場合において、水溶液として投与されてもよい。該溶液は、Ｌ−グルタミン、塩または誘導体のみを溶解成分として有していてもよく、他の薬学的に許容可能な化合物を含んでいてもよい。そのような化合物には、特に限定されないが、例えば、緩衝剤及び香料が含まれる。
Ｌ−グルタミン、その塩、誘導体または混合物の投与され得る方法の他の例は、特に限定されないが、以下を含む：液体（水またはジュース）中の懸濁物としての投与；粉末として、または他の形態（例えば、錠剤またはカプセル）の固体としての投与；食品（例えば、ヨーグルト）との混合物としての投与。水溶液と共に投与される場合、上述の投与形態は、他の薬学的に許容される成分を含んでいてもよい。
本発明に従う、Ｌ−グルタミン、塩または誘導体の投与される量は、一般的に、０．０５ｇ／体重ｋｇ〜１０．０ｇ／体重ｋｇの範囲である。多くの場合、該量は、０．１０ｇ／体重ｋｇ〜８．０ｇ／体重ｋｇの範囲である。所定の場合には、該量は、０．１５ｇ／体重ｋｇ〜７．０ｇ／体重ｋｇの範囲である。
Ｌ−グルタミン、その塩または誘導体は、一般的に、人に対して１日１回投与される。しかしながら、該化合物は、指定された場合には、１日１回を超えて投与されてもよい。
本発明の組成物が憩室症を治療するために用いられる場合、それらは憩室症を治療するために用いられる他の方法と組み合わせられてもよい。例えば、前記組成物は、繊維増加含有物に注目した食事療法の一部として投与されてもよい。
本発明の組成物は、ＣＩＴＲＵＣＥＬ、ＢＥＮＥＦＩＢＥＲ及びＭＥＴＡＭＵＣＩＬのような繊維サプリメントと共に投与してもよく、及び／または、該繊維サプリメントと組み合わせてもよい。該繊維サプリメントは、可溶性及び／または不溶性の繊維を含んでいてもよく、または、該サプリメントは全体が可溶性及び／または不溶性の繊維により構成されていてもよい。前記組成物と組み合わせ得る繊維は、特に限定されないが、例えば、メチルセルロース、小麦デキストリンの天然水溶性食物繊維及びオオバコ繊維を含む。該繊維はまた、前述の繊維の種類の組み合わせを含んでいてよい。
前記組成物及び繊維の組み合わせは、任意の適切な形態であってもよい。該組合せは、例えば、粉末、カプセル、カプレット、チュアブル錠の形態であってもよい。また、飲料またはゲルのような他のサプリメント形態に含まれていてもよい。
本発明に従う組成物は、結腸嚢の画像診断についての複数の異なる方法により決定される憩室症を治療することに用いられてもよい。画像診断方法は、特に限定されないが、例えば、結腸内視鏡検査、コンピュータ断層撮影及びバリウム注腸Ｘ線検査を含む。
Ｌ−グルタミン、その塩または誘導体を、３ヶ月、４ヶ月、５ヶ月、６ヶ月、７ヶ月、８ヶ月、９ヶ月、１０ヶ月、１１ヶ月または１２ヶ月投与した後に、患者の結腸に観測された嚢の数は少なくとも２５％減少する。所定の場合には、嚢の数は少なくとも５０％または７５％減少する。他の場合には、嚢の数は少なくとも８０％、８５％、９０％または９５％減少する。
実験結果
ある人は、結腸内視鏡検査により観測された複数の憩室を有していた。その人に、Ｌ−グルタミンを水溶液として１日３０ｇ経口摂取させた。Ｌ−グルタミン投与の１２ヶ月後、その人の憩室の数は９０％減少していた。

Claims (10)

  1. 憩室症の治療方法であって、憩室症の人に対し、Ｌ−グルタミン、Ｌ−グルタミン塩またはＬ−グルタミン誘導体を、１日に０．０５ｇ／体重ｋｇ〜１０．０ｇ／体重ｋｇ経口摂取させることを含む方法。
  2. 前記経口摂取される化合物がＬ−グルタミンである、請求項１に記載の方法。
  3. 前記Ｌ−グルタミンが水溶液の一部として経口摂取される、請求項２に記載の方法。
  4. 前記Ｌ−グルタミンが少なくとも６ヶ月間にわたって経口摂取される、請求項３に記載の方法。
  5. 前記憩室症の人における複数の前記憩室症が少なくとも５０％減少する、請求項４に記載の方法。
  6. 憩室症を治療するための組成物であって、前記組成物は、Ｌ−グルタミン、Ｌ−グルタミン塩またはＬ−グルタミン誘導体と、繊維サプリメントとを含む、組成物。
  7. 前記組成物がＬ−グルタミンを含む、請求項６に記載の組成物。
  8. 前記繊維が、メチルセルロース、小麦デキストリン及びオオバコを含む、請求項７に記載の組成物。
  9. 前記組成物がさらに香料を含む、請求項８に記載の組成物。
  10. 前記組成物が、粉末、カプセル、カプレットまたはチュアブル錠の形態である、請求項９に記載の組成物。
