Abstract
【解決手段】本実施形態の液晶光学素子は、第1基板と、前記第1基板の第1面上に設けられ第1方向に延在し前記第1方向と直交する第2方向に配列された一対の第1電極と、前記第1面上の前記一対の第1電極間に設けられ前記第1方向に延在し前記第2方向に配列された一対の第2電極と、前記第1基板の前記第1面に対向する第2面を有する第2基板と、前記第2基板の前記第2面上に設けられた対向電極であって、前記一対の第1電極および前記一対の第2電極のうちの少なくとも一方の一対の電極に対応する領域に前記第1方向に延在する第1切り欠き部を有する対向電極と、前記第1基板と前記第2基板との間に設けられた液晶層と、を備えている。

Description
第1実施形態による液晶光学素子の断面を図1に示す。この第1実施形態の液晶光学素子は、第1基板10と、第1基板10と対向するように配置された第2基板20と、第1基板10と第2基板20との間に挟持された液晶層30と、を備えており、屈折率が面内で変化する液晶GRIN(Gradient Index lens)として機能する。
第2実施形態による液晶光学素子1Aの断面を図6に示す。この第2実施形態の液晶光学素子1Aは、図1に示す第1実施形態の液晶光学素子1において、レンズ端電極12に対応する、対向電極22の領域に切り欠き部(溝)28を設けた構成となっている。
第3実施形態による液晶光学素子1Bについて図8を参照して説明する。図8は第3実施形態の液晶光学素子1Bの補助電極16付近の断面図である。この第3実施形態の液晶光学素子1Bは、図1に示す第1実施形態の液晶光学素子1において、補助電極16に対応する、対向電極22の領域に切り欠き部(溝)29を設けた構成となっている。第1実施形態のフレネル電極の場合と同様に、補助電極16が存在することにより屈折率分布にえぐれが生じる。しかし、この切り欠き部29を設けることにより、上記えぐれが生じるのを防止することができる。
第4実施形態による液晶光学素子1Cについて図9を参照して説明する。図9は第4実施形態の液晶光学素子1Bの補助電極16付近の断面図である。この第3実施形態の液晶光学素子1Bは、図1に示す第1実施形態の液晶光学素子1において、フレネル電極14を二つのフレネル電極14,15に分割し、フレネル電極14、15のそれぞれに対応する対向電極22の領域に切り欠き部24、25を設けた構成となっている。レンズ中心40に近い側のフレネル電極15を補助電極として考えれば、第3実施形態に相当し、屈折率分布にえぐれが生じるのを防止することができる。切り欠き部24の位置については第1実施形態で説明したと同じとなる。
Claims (12)
- 第1基板と、
前記第1基板の第1面上に設けられ第1方向に延在し前記第1方向と直交する第2方向に配列された一対の第1電極と、
前記第1面上の前記一対の第1電極間に設けられ前記第1方向に延在し前記第2方向に配列された一対の第2電極と、
前記第1基板の前記第1面に対向する第2面を有する第2基板と、
前記第2基板の前記第2面上に設けられた対向電極であって、前記一対の第1電極および前記一対の第2電極のうちの少なくとも一方の一対の電極に対応する領域に前記第1方向に延在する第1切り欠き部を有する対向電極と、
前記第1基板と前記第2基板との間に設けられた液晶層と、
を備えた液晶光学素子。 - 前記第1切り欠き部は前記一対の第2電極のそれぞれに対応する領域に設けられ、
前記一対の第1電極のそれぞれの前記第2方向における中心を結ぶ線分の中点を通り前記第1方向に平行となる第1中心軸に平行で前記第1中心軸から遠い前記第1切り欠き部の第1側面は、前記第1および第2方向とそれぞれ直交する第3方向から前記対向電極を前記第1基板に投影したとき、前記第2電極上に位置する請求項1記載の液晶光学素子。 - 前記第1中心軸に平行で前記第1中心軸に近い前記第1切り欠き部の第2側面は、前記第3方向から前記対向電極を前記第1基板に投影したとき、前記第1中心軸に平行で前記第1中心軸に近い前記第2電極の第1側面と同じ位置かまたは前記第1側面より前記第1中心軸の近くに位置する請求項2記載の液晶光学素子。
- 前記第1切り欠き部を前記第3方向から前記第1基板に投影したとき、前記第1切り欠き部の対応する前記第2電極に対するオーバラップの割合は、0.3〜1.0である請求項2または3記載の液晶光学素子。
- 前記オーバラップの割合は、0.45〜0.9である請求項4記載の液晶光学素子。
- 前記対向電極は、前記一対の第1電極に対応する領域に前記第1方向に延在する第2切り欠き部を更に有する請求項2乃至5のいずれか1項に記載の液晶光学素子。
- 前記第1中心軸に平行で前記第1中心軸から遠い前記第2切り欠き部の第1側面は、前記第3方向から前記対向電極を前記第1基板に投影したとき、前記第1方向における対応する前記第1電極の中心線と、前記第1中心軸に近い前記第1電極の第1側面との間に位置する請求項6記載の液晶光学素子。
- 前記第1中心軸に平行で前記第1中心軸に近い前記第2切り欠き部の第2側面は、前記第3方向から前記対向電極を前記第1基板に投影したとき、前記第1中心軸に平行で前記第1電極の第1側面と同じ位置かまたは前記第1側面より前記中心軸の近くに位置する請求項7記載の液晶光学素子。
- 前記第1面上の前記一対の第2電極間に設けられ前記第1方向に延在し前記第2方向に配列された複数の第3電極を更に備えた請求項1乃至8のいずれか1項に記載の液晶光学素子。
- 前記対向電極は、前記第3電極に対応する領域に前記第1方向に延在する第3切り欠き部を有する請求項9記載の液晶光学素子。
- 前記対向電極は、前記第1電極とこの第1電極に隣接する第2電極との間に対応する領域に前記第1方向に延在する第4切り欠き部を有する請求項1乃至10のいずれか1項に記載の液晶光学素子。
- 請求項1乃至11のいずれか1項に記載の液晶光学素子と、
前記液晶光学素子と積層され画像情報を含む光を前記液晶層に入射させ画像を表示する画像表示部と、
を備えた画像表示装置。
