金属イオンは微生物の細胞質膜、細胞壁の表面に付着、細胞質の電子伝達系とイオ伝導が影響をうけ腐食における局部電池機構と類似の機構、すき間腐食の反応が進行し滅菌するため、電極と電解液の界面で電気二重層の電気化学系反応で、放電による水の電気分解、電池反応、電着、めっきを起こす反応エネルギーは電気エネルギーに変換され、金属イオンの生成を特徴とする。
