Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to an organic light emitting display device having a multiple resonance structure having a hemispherical lens on a pixel.
An organic electroluminescent display device (organic EL display) is a self-luminous display device, and is used for displays and illumination. The organic EL display has advantages in display performance such as higher visibility than conventional CRTs and LCDs and no viewing angle dependency. There is also an advantage that the display can be reduced in weight and thickness. In addition to the advantages of light weight and thin layers, organic EL lighting has the possibility of realizing illumination in a shape that could not be realized so far by using a flexible substrate.
As described above, the organic light emitting display device has excellent characteristics, but generally the refractive index of each layer constituting the display device including the light emitting layer is higher than that of air. For example, in an organic light emitting display device, the refractive index of an organic thin film layer such as a light emitting layer is 1.6 to 2.1. For this reason, the emitted light is easily totally reflected at the interface, and the light extraction efficiency may be less than 20%, and most of the light is lost.
For example, an organic electroluminescent display unit in a generally known organic electroluminescent display device includes an organic compound layer disposed between a pair of electrode layers on a substrate. The organic compound layer includes a light emitting layer, and the organic electroluminescent display device emits light emitted from the light emitting layer from the light extraction surface side. In this case, there is a problem that the light extraction efficiency is low because the total reflection component that is light having a critical angle or more cannot be extracted at the light extraction surface or the interface between the electrode layer and the organic compound layer.
Therefore, in order to improve the light extraction efficiency, a light extraction member such as a lens that controls the optical path of the light emitted from the light emitting layer and emits the light emitted from the light emitting layer from the light extraction surface side is provided. An organic light emitting display device arranged on an optical path has been proposed.
For example, it has been proposed to provide a microlens member on the light emitting surface side of an organic electroluminescence element having a light emitting layer between two electrodes (see Patent Document 1). According to this method, the wide-angle component emitted from the organic electroluminescent element can be taken out into the air without being totally reflected at the interface between the optical member and the air, thereby greatly improving the light extraction efficiency. Can do.
An organic light emitting display device having a microcavity structure has been proposed. For example, it has been proposed to form a microcavity structure between a metal reflecting mirror and a metal semi-transmissive mirror by configuring the opposing electrodes with a metal reflecting mirror and a metal semi-transmissive mirror (for example, Patent Document 2). And Patent Document 3). According to this configuration, it is possible to narrow the emission spectrum width, adjust the emission spectrum peak, increase the spontaneous emission emission amount in the organic light emitting display device, and the like by the multiple interference effect and the parcel effect of the microcavity. The emission spectrum unique to phosphorescent and fluorescent materials in the organic light emitting layer does not necessarily have the narrow band characteristics and peak characteristics of the emission spectrum necessary for the display, and is suitable for the display by providing a microcavity structure. Can be obtained.
However, when a microlens is disposed on the light extraction surface side of an organic light emitting display having a microcavity structure, there are the following problems.
That is, in an organic light emitting display having a microcavity structure, a plurality of intensity peaks due to the multiple interference effect appear in the light distribution as the angular distribution of intensity (see FIG. 1). This causes the following problem. FIG. 1 shows a light distribution in an organic light emitting display device having a structure in which a microlens is disposed on the light extraction surface side of an organic light emitting display unit having a microcavity structure. The axis represents the radiation angle, and the vertical axis represents the radiation intensity distribution.
First, the light intensity does not become a natural light distribution that monotonously decreases as the radiation angle increases, that is, the light distribution angle increases, and the light intensity at a specific angle according to the optical path length and the central wavelength of light emission in the microcavity structure. There is a problem of an unnatural light distribution that repeats high and low.
In addition, the wavelength of intensifying light fluctuates to the longer wavelength side as the light distribution angle becomes wider, so there is a problem that the color fluctuates depending on the angle.
These problems occur when the interface between the light extraction surface of the organic electroluminescent display device having a microcavity structure and air has a plane parallel to each layer of the organic electroluminescent element in the organic electroluminescent display device. Since most of the light components are not taken out of the organic light emitting display device due to total reflection, this is not a big problem.
However, when a microlens member is disposed on the light extraction surface of the organic light emitting display device to improve the light extraction efficiency, the microlens does not receive total reflection of most components of the problem light. Since it is incident on the inside of the member and taken out from the surface of the microlens, it becomes a big problem.
By the way, an organic electroluminescence display device having a microcavity structure and an organic electroluminescence display device having a multiple resonance structure having a double resonance structure is known (see Patent Document 4).
The organic light emitting display includes a total reflection mirror, a first half mirror layer that selectively reflects a first wavelength, and a second half mirror layer that selectively reflects a second wavelength different from the first wavelength. The first resonance unit and the second resonance unit constituted by these are made to resonate with respect to different fundamental wavelengths.
This organic electroluminescent display device combines different fundamental wavelengths in the first resonance unit and the second resonance unit, for example, additive color mixing of light of the fundamental wavelength indicating blue (λ 1 ) and orange (λ 2 ) Thus, white light is emitted, and it does not solve the problem of an unnatural light distribution that repeats the light intensity at a specific angle and the problem that the color varies depending on the angle.

The first resonator structure has a structure in which light emitted from the light emitting layer is emitted from the light extraction surface by causing interference between the reflective electrode and the semi-transmissive electrode.
When the resonant wavelength of the first resonator structure and lambda 1, lambda 1 is assumed to satisfy the following formula (1).
If m 1 is defined as the order of the microcavity structure, the order of the microcavity structure may be the first order or more, and the primary to secondary orders are particularly preferable.
With the microcavity structure, it is possible to narrow the emission spectrum width, adjust the emission spectrum peak, increase the spontaneous emission amount in the organic electroluminescence display device, etc. due to the multiple interference effect and the parcel effect. Suitable emission spectral characteristics can be obtained.
However, in the first or higher order microcavity structure, the light distribution is unnatural due to the configuration of the organic light emitting display. Therefore, the present invention can be preferably used.
Here, the macrocavity structure means a structure in which a semi-transmissive electrode or semi-transmissive reflective layer on the light emission side interferes with a reflective electrode layer on the opposite side to the light emission.
When the microcavity structure is primary, the optical length L (λ) is 1λ (where λ represents the emission wavelength), and the minimum optical that is a condition for strengthening the light that round-trips between the metal reflective layers. Means long.
The microcavity structure is second order, the optical length L (λ) is 2λ (where λ represents the emission wavelength), and the minimum optical that is a condition for strengthening the light that round-trips between the metal reflective layers. It means that the optical length is the second shortest from the longest.
That is, the microcavity structure is m-order (where m is an integer), the optical length L (λ) is mλ (where λ represents the emission wavelength), and rounds between the metal reflective layers. It means that the optical length is the mth shortest from the minimum optical length which is a condition for the tripping light to strengthen.
The second resonator structure has a structure in which light emitted from the light emitting layer is emitted from the light extraction surface by causing interference between the reflective electrode and the semi-transmissive layer.
When the resonant wavelength of the second resonator structure and lambda 2, lambda 2 is assumed to satisfy the following equation (5).
As the Θ, the matters described for Θ in the formula (1) can be applied.
The m 2 corresponds to the order of the second resonator structure (microcavity structure), similarly to m 1 in the equation (1).
Further, by changing the value of said m 2, when associating the lambda 1 and lambda 2 to be described later, with respect to the m 2 and the m 1, m 2 -m 1 is a positive integer of 1 or larger . By setting the value of m 2 in this way, the relationship between λ 1 and λ 2 described later can be determined.
The λ 1 and the λ 2 need to have a substantially equal relationship, and the ratio between the λ 1 and the λ 2 and the relationship so that λ 1 / λ 2 is 0.9 to 1.1. Attached.
If λ 1 / λ 2 is out of the numerical value range of 0.9 to 1.1, the variation in color depending on the viewing angle increases, and the light extraction efficiency also decreases, so that the effect of the present invention cannot be obtained. .
The λ 1 / λ 2 is preferably 0.95 to 1.05 and ideally 1.
When λ 1 / λ 2 is in the numerical range, it is possible to suppress the light on the wide angle side from shifting to the long wavelength side.
Further, the λ 1 and the λ 2 need to be approximately equal to the main emission wavelength λ 0 of the light emitted from the light emitting layer.
<Hemispherical lens>
The hemispherical lens is disposed on a light extraction surface and has a function of controlling an optical path of light emitted from the light emitting layer.
Examples of the light extraction surface include a glass substrate in the bottom emission type. The top emission type includes a barrier layer.
The hemispherical lens is not particularly limited in shape, arrangement, size, material, etc., and can be appropriately selected according to the purpose. Examples of the shape include spherical, hemispherical, elliptical, and pedestal. Examples include shape. Among these, a hemispherical lens is particularly preferable in terms of an improvement rate of front luminance.
Examples of the arrangement of the hemispherical lenses include a square lattice shape and a honeycomb shape.
Examples of the material of the hemispherical lens include transparent resin, glass, transparent crystal, and transparent ceramic.
As the size of the hemispherical lens, in the case of a hemispherical lens, the effective diameter is preferably 10 μm to 1,000 μm, and more preferably 20 μm to 200 μm.
The hemispherical lens preferably has a ratio (φ / a) between the maximum length a of one side of the light emitting layer and the effective diameter φ of the hemispherical lens of 1.0 or more, preferably 1.2 or more. Is more preferable, and 2.5 or more is particularly preferable because the effect of improving the light extraction efficiency due to the increase in the effective diameter of the lens is almost converged.
When the ratio (φ / a) is less than 1.0, the area without the lens increases, and the extraction efficiency does not increase.
If the effective diameter φ of the lens is too larger than the maximum length “a” of one side of the light emitting layer, the aperture ratio when an organic EL display is formed decreases. Therefore, as shown in FIG. The aperture ratio (B / A) of a simple organic EL display is about 5%, and the ratio (φ / a) when the aperture ratio is 5% and lenses are arranged in a square lattice pattern on a glass substrate is 4. Therefore, the upper limit is preferably 4.47 or less. If the ratio (φ / a) exceeds 4.47, the minimum required brightness may not be ensured. It is preferable.
Here, the maximum length of one side of the light emitting layer differs depending on the shape of the light emitting layer and can be appropriately selected. For example, when the length of one side is equal (for example, a square), However, when the length of one side is different (for example, a rectangle), the longest side is adopted.
The effective diameter of the hemispherical lens means a diameter of a portion that effectively functions as a lens. When the entire lens functions effectively as a lens, it is equivalent to the lens diameter.

For example, as described in “Monthly Display”, September 2000, pages 33 to 37, the organic electroluminescent display device of the present invention is a full color type. B), green (G), red (R)) corresponding to the three-color emission method in which the layer structure for emitting light corresponding to each of them is arranged on the substrate, white light emission by the layer structure for white light emission through the color filter to the three primary colors There are known a white method of dividing, a color conversion method of converting blue light emission by a layer structure for blue light emission into red (R) and green (G) through a fluorescent dye layer.

An embodiment of the organic light emitting display device of the present invention configured as described above will be described with reference to the drawings.
FIG. 3 is a schematic cross-sectional view for explaining the outline of the organic light emitting display 100 according to an embodiment of the present invention.
The organic light emitting display 100 includes a reflective electrode 2, a hole injection layer 3, a light emitting layer 4, an electron injection layer 5, a semi-transmissive electrode 6, an optical path length adjusting layer 7, and a semi-transmissive layer 8 on a substrate 1. A hemispherical lens 22 is arranged on the semi-transmissive layer 8 as a light extraction surface.
The organic light emitting display device 100 has a first resonator structure including the reflective electrode 2, the hole injection layer 3, the light emitting layer 4, the electron injection layer 5, and the semi-transmissive electrode 6, and the reflective electrode 2. , A hole injection layer 3, a light emitting layer 4, an electron injection layer 5, a semi-transmissive electrode 6, an optical path length adjusting layer 7, and a semi-transmissive layer 8.
In the organic light emitting display 100 configured as described above, in the direction of the optical axis (perpendicular to each layer constituting the organic light emitting display), the resonance wavelength λ 1 of the first resonator and the second resonator The resonance wavelength λ 2 is set to be λ 1 / λ 2 = 0.9 to 1.1, and has substantially the same resonance wavelength (λ 1 , λ 2 ). The light emission from the light emitting layer 4 has a light interference effect that is increased and intensified as compared with the case of the first resonator alone, thereby increasing the intensity of the emitted light. On the other hand, in the direction in which the radiation angle from the optical axis direction increases, the shift amount of the resonance wavelength of the second resonator toward the long wavelength side is the shift of the resonance wavelength of the first resonator toward the long wavelength side. Since the amount is smaller than the amount, the amount of shift of the resonance wavelength toward the long wavelength side can be reduced as compared with the case of only the first resonator. As a result, the amount of color variation due to the viewing angle (radiation angle) can be suppressed.
The light transmitted through the semi-transmissive layer 8 without being totally reflected enters the hemispherical lens 22 and is extracted outside without being totally reflected, so that the light extraction efficiency can be improved.

On the cathode of the organic electroluminescence device, Alq 3 (tris- (8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum) was deposited by vacuum deposition to a thickness of 183 nm to form an optical path length adjusting layer.
Next, Ag was deposited on the optical path length adjusting layer so as to have a thickness of 12 nm by vacuum deposition, thereby forming a semi-transmissive layer.

(Evaluation)
The optical characteristic of the organic electroluminescent display apparatus in Examples 1-4 and Comparative Examples 1-2 is demonstrated.
FIG. 4 shows an organic electroluminescent display device (m = 2) having a secondary microcavity structure in Comparative Example 1 having a single-resonance structure that does not have the first resonator structure and the second resonator structure. It is a figure which shows the light distribution of an organic electroluminescent display apparatus and the organic electroluminescent display apparatus in Example 1 made into the structure of the double resonance which has a 1st resonator structure and a 2nd resonator structure.
As understood from FIG. 4, the organic electroluminescent display device in Example 1 has a monotonous decrease in the radiant intensity in the region where the radiant angle is on the wide angle side as compared with the organic electroluminescent display device in Comparative Example 1. The emission intensity of the light shifted to the long wavelength side, which appears as a peak, can be greatly reduced.
Therefore, the organic light emitting display device according to the present invention does not have a natural light distribution in which the light intensity decreases monotonously in the organic light emitting display device having a hemispherical lens, and the optical path length in the microcavity structure and The problem of an unnatural light distribution that repeats the light intensity at a specific angle corresponding to the center wavelength of light emission can be suppressed.
Moreover, based on having optimized the light distribution in this way, the organic electroluminescent display devices in Examples 1 to 4 change in color depending on the viewing angle, compared to the organic electroluminescent display devices in Comparative Examples 1 and 2. As a result, the problem of color misregistration that can be seen can be greatly solved.
In the organic electroluminescent display devices in Examples 1 to 4 and Comparative Examples 1 to 2, when the radiation angle in the cylinder lens having a refractive index of 1.8 is swung from 0 ° (perpendicular to each organic layer) to 89 ° The results of measuring the chromaticity change are shown in FIGS. 5A to 5F. FIG. 5A is a diagram showing a change in chromaticity of the organic light emitting display device in Comparative Example 1. FIG. 5B is a diagram illustrating a change in chromaticity of the organic light emitting display according to the first embodiment. FIG. 5C is a diagram illustrating a change in chromaticity of the organic light emitting display device according to Example 2. FIG. 5D is a diagram illustrating a change in chromaticity of the organic light emitting display device according to Example 3. FIG. 5E is a diagram showing a change in chromaticity of the organic light emitting display device in Comparative Example 2. FIG. 5F is a diagram illustrating a change in chromaticity of the organic light emitting display device according to Example 4.
Compared with the chromaticity change of Comparative Example 1 (FIG. 5A) (= the magnitude of the change of each chromaticity coordinate in the orbit), Example 1 (FIG. 5) having the first resonator structure and the second resonator structure. It was confirmed that the chromaticity change of 5B) was clearly reduced. Further, as shown in Example 2 (FIG. 5C) and Example 3 (FIG. 5D), when λ 1 / λ 2 is in the range of 0.9 to 1.1, compared with Comparative Example 1. It was confirmed that the change in chromaticity was within the same or small range.
Further, the chromaticity change of Example 4 (FIG. 5F) having the first resonator structure and the second resonator structure is clearly smaller than the chromaticity change of Comparative Example 2 (FIG. 5E). I was able to confirm.
The results of Examples 1 to 4 and Comparative Examples 1 and 2 described above were performed for one pixel of red (about 630 nm), but similar results were obtained for blue (about 470 nm) and green (about 530 nm). Obtained.
That is, when a device having three pixels of RGB of red (R), green (G), and blue (B) is manufactured, when a lens is arranged for RGB3 pixels, as shown in FIG. Each pixel may be surrounded by a lens, or as shown in FIG. 7, the RGB 3 pixels may be surrounded by a lens as a unit. Further, as shown in FIG. 8, when the pixel is not square but is a rectangle having different side lengths, the longer side is adopted as the maximum length a of one side of the light emitting portion (light emitting layer).
Further, the shape of the pixel is not particularly limited and can be appropriately changed according to the purpose. As shown in FIG. 9, the lens 22 is arranged on the square pixel 21, as shown in FIG. A mode in which the lens 22 is arranged on the rectangular pixel 21, a mode in which the lens 22 is arranged in the circular pixel 21 as shown in FIG. 11, and a lens 22 in the triangular pixel 21 as shown in FIG. Examples of the arrangement are described.
In Example 1 and Comparative Example 1, evaluation was performed by fabricating an organic electroluminescent element having a maximum length a of 2 mm on one side of the light emitting portion (light emitting layer), but the ratio (φ / a) was If maintained, the optical properties are equivalent.
Actually, an organic electroluminescent device having a maximum length a of 2 μm on one side of the light emitting portion (light emitting layer) was prepared and evaluated in the same manner. At this time, an experiment was conducted using a glass substrate having a thickness (d) of 20 μm. As a result, the same optical properties as when the maximum length a of one side of the light emitting portion (light emitting layer) was 2 mm were obtained.
