Abstract
Description
本出願は、2004年1月13日に出願された米国特許出願第10/756015号明細書に対応する一部継続出願である。
本発明は、特有の電気化学的性質によって区別される新規の種類の蓄電池に関する。その変化した状態で、正極は二酸化鉛を含み、負極は亜鉛、カドミウム、鉛、鉄および/またはこれらの金属の合金と組合せを含む。電解質は、アルカリ金属の水酸化物または水酸化テトラメチルアンモニウムのアルカリ性水溶液からなり、炭酸塩、ホウ酸塩、ケイ酸塩、リン酸塩および硫酸塩を含む様々な緩衝剤が添加されていてもよい。放電すると、二酸化鉛は一酸化鉛に還元され、金属は酸化物へと酸化される。
電池の電解質はアルカリ性である。塩基の水溶液がアルカリ度をもたらす。これらの塩基には、アンモニアおよびアルカリ金属(すなわちリチウム、ナトリウム、カリウムおよびセシウム)の水酸化物が含まれる。加えて、水酸化テトラメチルアンモニウムを使用してもよい。
本発明の実際の実施形態の電極は、電極の表面積を最大限にするため、シート、繊維、または粒子として構成されてもよい。導電率を高めるために、炭素質材料の散在性粒子を使用してもよい。電解質を固定するためにゲル化剤を添加してもよい。必要ならば、短絡を防止するために正極と負極との間に分離器を使用してもよい。
正極:
(1)PbO2+H2O+2e−→PbO+2OH−
負極:
(2)Zn+2OH−→ZnO+H2O+2e−
上記の反応で、水酸化亜鉛は酸化亜鉛の形成の中間段階であってよい。これらの化学反応式が複合されると、電池の反応は、

となる。反応全体で、放電中は濃度勾配があることはあるが、電解質の平均組成は変化しない。
新規の蓄電池を設計する際の特に困難な課題は、電気化学反応にさらされ、しかも電解質による腐食に耐える電極材料を特定することである。この点に関して理論は有用であるが、電極と電解質の双方について材料の有効性を実証するには経験的なデータが必要である。電池の相対的性能の1つの尺度は、その開路電圧である。別の考慮対象はサイクル寿命である。

この化学反応式から、このような溶液が強アルカリ性であることが分かる。加水分解で生成した炭酸は、塩基性は強いが重炭酸塩を形成する場合には逃げない。しかし、炭酸ナトリウムの濃度を増すことによって加水分解の減少が可能であり、ひいては水酸化物の形成をある程度制御できる。

この場合も、ホウ酸カリウムの濃度を調整することにより水酸基濃度を制御可能である。
リチウム、ナトリウム、カリウムおよびセシウムを含むアルカリ金属の化合物によって、アルカリ度が得られる。リチウムは、その炭酸塩およびリン酸塩が水にほとんど溶けないので、限界がある。セシウムは極めて強い塩基を提供するが、この材料のコストにより利用可能性が限定される。水酸化アンモニウムは溶液中で塩基性であるが、その揮発性により使用が制約される。最後に、水酸化テトラメチルアンモニウムは、水酸化ナトリウムおよび水酸化カリウムのアルカリ性に近い強アルカリ性であることが知られている。
鉛アルカリ電池の構成は制限されない。電極および電解質の様々な組合せをテストする目的で、ガラスジャーと、必要ならばポリプロピレンシートによって分離された金属条片とから、簡単な電池が組み立てられた。しかし、実際に使用できる蓄電池は、最大限の電極表面積と最小限の電解質容積で設計することが必要であろう。平坦なものであれ、螺旋状に巻き付けられたものであれ、並列プレートとしてこのような形状設計が適している。あるいは、鉛と金属のいずれかの粒子を、単独で、または黒鉛とともに散在させて使用してもよい。このようにして、電池の容量を高め、その内部抵抗を最小限にすることができる。

- 前記アルカリ性電解質は水酸化テトラメチルアンモニウムの水溶液を含むことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の蓄電池。
- 前記アルカリ性電解質は、炭酸塩、ホウ酸塩、ケイ酸塩、リン酸塩および硫酸塩の群から選択された緩衝剤を含むことを特徴とする請求項1に記載の蓄電池。
