この反応は、写真の感光材料に用いられているように、光に対して極めて敏感であるために、銀塩がヘアクリーム中から徐々に毛髪に移行し、還元固着して発色する前に、クリーム相中で素早く還元され、銀の黒色粒子が析出してしまうためである。
このため見掛けは毛髪が黒く染まったように見えるが、シャンプーによりこれらの黒色粒子は洗い流されてしまい、毛髪上にほとんど残らないために、1剤型の染毛料クリームベースでの使用には不適当である。
したがって、塩化アルキルトリメチル系カチオン界面活性剤のような塩素イオン更にはハロゲンイオンを対イオンに持つカチオン界面活性剤の配合は、染毛料の染色力を低下させないためには、配合量を著しく制限されることになる。
このような制限された配合量では、毛髪のしなやかさやセット力の点で性能が十分に発揮できない場合が出てくる。
銀の黒色粒子析出現象は、塩化アルキルトリメチルアンモニウム系カチオン界面活性剤を用いた時ばかりでなく、広くハロゲンイオンが存在した時にも当てはまる。
さらに、使用する銀塩が水に易溶な場合は、この現象はより速やかに起こる。
