Abstract
Description
The present invention relates generally to an apparatus for incorporating a communication transponder into a tire, and more particularly to mounting a transponder in place on an annular tire surface while attaching an annular antenna connected to the transponder to the annular tire surface. It relates to an automated device to be installed.
An annular device including an antenna that electronically transmits tire and wheel identification information and other data at a radio frequency is generally used. The apparatus includes a radio frequency tag or transponder with an IC chip having a sufficient data capacity to hold at least tire or wheel identification information. Other data such as tire pressure or tire or wheel temperature at the transponder location can be transmitted along with the identification data by the transponder.
An annular antenna is attached to the tire and transmits data at a radio frequency from the transponder to a reader mounted on the wheel assembly. The antenna and transponder can be incorporated into the tire during the “pre-curing” process of the tire. The integrity of the tire and antenna connection is greatly improved by incorporation during the pre-cure assembly process. In practice, however, this is very difficult to do. Both radial ply tires and bias ply tires are substantially diametrically expanded in the manufacturing process. The bias-ply tire is diametrically expanded when inserted into a curing press that typically includes a bladder that pushes the green tire into the toroidal mold. The radial ply tire is expanded in the diametrical direction during the tire assembly process or forming process, and further expanded in the diametrical direction during the curing process. Therefore, the annular antenna and its associated electronic tag that are incorporated into the tire in the pre-cure process must withstand significant stresses that can lead to component failure. In particular, the electronic tag and the connecting portion between the tag and the antenna are easily damaged by the force applied to the tire during assembly before curing.
In order to avoid damage to the electronic tag or the connection between the tag and the annular antenna during the curing process, in another known approach, the tag and antenna are assembled as an independent annular unit that is attached to the tire after curing. . There has been proposed an automated apparatus and method for attaching an annular transponder unit to an annular tire surface using an arm end tool that gradually attaches the annular unit to the tire. To attach the annular antenna ring, the transponder housing is held by an external robot arm and brought into contact with a small patch of adhesive pre-applied to the tire. The robot arm releases the transponder housing and turns the tire, or the robot tool at the end of the arm, or both to create a relative rotation between the tire and the tool. The annular antenna is guided part by part with a tool and attached to the tire surface with an adhesive.
While this apparatus and method works well, what is important is to prevent the annular ring from moving relative to the tire in a radial direction when the annular unit is installed. When such a movement occurs, the annular ring may be displaced due to friction between the annular antenna ring and the guide mechanism of the arm end tool. Misalignment of the annular transponder unit from its intended position on the target annular surface of the tire can lead to malfunction and degradation in tire monitoring system performance, and the process of attaching the annular transponder unit to the tire must be repeated. May occur.
Accordingly, there is a need for an apparatus and method for securing an annular transponder unit to an annular tire surface while relatively rotating the tire and the mounting tool. Such an apparatus must not attach a specified part of the annular unit to the tire in such a way that the robot tool at the end of the arm does not affect the work of attaching the annular transponder unit to the tire part by part. Don't be. Such a procedure must further ensure the functional safety of the electronic device and ensure that the electrical connection between the antenna and the tag electronic device is maintained. Furthermore, it is desirable that any device and method for securing the annular transponder unit to the tire during the installation process minimizes the work content to reduce human error and reduce manufacturing costs. Finally, such a procedure would ideally match well with the arm end mounting tool in a manner that minimizes cycle time.
The apparatus of the present invention and the method of using the apparatus are for attaching an annular transponder unit having a structure in which a sensor housing is connected to an annular antenna to an annular tire surface. In one aspect of the present invention, an apparatus includes a rotating turntable that rotates a tire having an annular tire surface so that the tire can be supported in an accessible positional relationship, and a proximal end side that is disposed close to the turntable. And an arm with an arm end tool for attaching the transponder unit to the annular tire surface part by part. The tool engages the sensor housing, engages the annular antenna with a gripping mechanism that positions the sensor housing in a preselected position on the annular tire surface, and rotates the annular antenna while the tire is rotated. And a guide mechanism arranged part by part along the tire surface. An adhesive application nozzle that applies an adhesive material between the annular antenna and the annular tire surface while the tire is rotated can be disposed between the guide mechanism and the gripping means. In another aspect of the present invention, a prestaging station that supports the transponder unit can be further utilized. In this case, the arm moves between the prestaging station and the turntable, and the gripping mechanism engages the sensor housing at the prestaging station and transfers the transponder unit from the prestaging station to the turntable.
In another aspect of the invention, a method for attaching an annular transponder unit to an annular tire surface is disclosed. This method
a. Mounting a tire having an annular tire surface and arranged to be accessible on a support table;
b. Placing an arm having tool means at the remote end near the support table;
c. Supporting a portion of the transponder unit against the annular tire surface by means of arm tool means; and
d. Relatively rotating the arm tool means and the tire between an initial relative position and a final relative position;

Another aspect of the method of the present invention is to rotate the arm tool means and the tire relative to each other by turning a table that supports the tire. Still another aspect of the present invention is to grip the sensor housing by gripping means located at the remote end of the arm and to press and hold the sensor housing in a marked position on the annular tire surface. And a step of guiding the annular antenna by each portion while facing the annular tire surface by the guiding means device disposed at the remote end of the arm, and the annular antenna and the annular tire surface while the tire rotates. And gradually applying the adhesive material part by part. Tires made according to the present method also form an aspect of the present invention.
Thus, the present invention provides an efficient, reliable, automated and cost-effective apparatus and method for attaching an annular transponder unit to a tire and meeting industry demands for such a system. It is.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the drawings. As used herein, a “transponder” is any electronic instrument (device) that can monitor conditions such as pneumatic pressure of a pneumatic tire and then transmit that information to an external device. The external device may be an RF (Radio Frequency) reader / interrogator or a simple RF receiver. A simple receiver can be used when the transponder is “active” and has its own power supply. The reader / interrogator is used when the transponder is “passive” and is driven by the RF signal from the reader / interrogator. In either case, the transponder is coupled with an external device to form a component of the overall tire condition monitoring / warning system. As used herein, a “sensor” is a transponder that senses the condition of a tire and transmits a reading based thereon. In conventional systems, an antenna is coupled to one or more sensors that form a transponder unit. The antenna can have various configurations, one of which is an annular body or loop. The antenna and the sensor together form an annular transponder unit. For purposes of this disclosure and the present invention, an annular transponder unit is not a specific sensor or transponder. That is, in the practice of the present invention, a wide range of commonly used transponders, sensors, and related electronic devices can be used in combination.
As mentioned above, the transponder needs to be equipped with an antenna in order to transmit or receive RF signals. The antenna preferably has an annular configuration in the present invention, and is preferably incorporated into a tire in a post-manufacturing process. As used herein, an “annular antenna” may be circular, elliptical, symmetric, or asymmetric without departing from the principles of the present invention. However, the preferred configuration of the antenna is circular and has a size that overlaps the tire sidewall region to which the antenna is attached. The antenna may have a single wire or may have multiple strands. A variety of commercially available transponders, sensors, and other electrical devices utilized in combination with an annular antenna formed of a conventional conductive material are suitable for use in accordance with the principles of the present invention.
Materials that can be used as antenna wires include steel, aluminum, copper, or other conductive wires. As disclosed herein, the wire diameter is generally considered insignificant for operation as a transponder antenna. In order to enhance durability, a steel stranded wire composed of a multi-stranded stranded wire of a thin wire is preferable. Other wire options available include ribbon cable, flexible circuit, conductive film, conductive rubber, and the like.
Referring first to FIG. 13, an
An annular antenna 154 is provided. Although the antenna 154 has a sinusoidal shape, it is not always necessary. The antenna 154 may also be formed in another pattern, and may be one or more straight wires as needed, and may be a filament wire, cord, or stranded wire. Materials that can be used as wires include steel, aluminum, copper, or other conductive wires. As described above, the wire diameter is generally considered not to be important for operation as an antenna, and a multi-stranded wire of a thin wire is preferable. The antenna 154 has flexibility due to its curved shape, and the risk of breakage during the manufacture and use of the tire described below is minimized.
With continued reference to FIG. 13, a preferably

With continued reference to FIGS. 3, 4, and 5, a
Spacer rings 62 and 64 are aligned with the

The relative arrangement of the
In operation, one or more annular transponder units are disposed adjacent to the
The
The
Thereafter, the
One exemplary mechanism for holding the tire in place on the turntable, holding the transponder as the tire rotates, and attaching the antenna to the tire is shown in FIGS. In general, this mechanism allows a portion of the ring element (which is not necessarily so, but preferably a transponder package) to be temporarily placed inside the tire while the tire is being rotated to finish the installation of the ring element. Provided to hold in place on the surface. In installing the flexible ring component, the tire is placed on a horizontal rotating turntable. As one of the broader modes of operation described above, a flexible ring component is placed on the lower inner surface of the tire, adhesive is applied to the entire circumference of the ring, and the ring is adhered to the tire. At its final position, the ring has a circular shape and is coaxial with the center of rotation of the tire. The ring is preferably arranged approximately 10 mm from the toe of the tire bead, but this is not necessary.
As mentioned above, to install the ring, the transponder housing that is part of the ring is held by the robot arm and brought into contact with a small patch of adhesive that has been applied to the tire in advance. The robot arm then releases the transponder and the locking mechanism moves into place and contacts the flexible part of the ring component that is pulled part by part through the guide. Adhesive is continuously sprayed onto and around the ring as the flexible portion of the ring passes through the guide to secure the ring to the tire. The fixing mechanism contacts the tag portion of the ring from the lateral direction so that the ring does not move in the radial direction with respect to the tire. This prevents the ring from shifting due to friction when the flexible part of the ring passes through the guide.
The turntable centering mechanism incorporates a plurality of centering
14 and 15, the
The
As will be appreciated from the above, the
In operation, the
In operation, the
Thereafter, the
From the foregoing, it will be appreciated that the present invention provides an efficient and reliable connection between the annular assembly and the annular surface. The present invention can be applied when it is desired to attach an annular ring to an annular surface, particularly when the sensor unit is attached to a tire.
