【0001】

溶剤としてはターピネオール、BCA(ブチルカルビトールアセテート)が一般的である。

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a plasma display panel using excitation light emission of a phosphor by vacuum ultraviolet rays generated from rare gas discharge.
[0002]
[Prior art]
An AC type plasma display panel is configured such that a front substrate and a rear substrate are arranged to face each other so as to form a discharge space therebetween, and a discharge gas composed of neon, xenon, or the like is enclosed in the discharge space. On the front substrate, a plurality of stripe-shaped scan electrodes and sustain electrodes which are covered with a dielectric layer and form a pair are formed. On the back substrate, a plurality of stripe-shaped data electrodes are formed in a direction orthogonal to the scan electrodes and the sustain electrodes. Striped barrier ribs are arranged between adjacent data electrodes, and red, green and blue phosphor layers are sequentially arranged and formed between the barrier ribs. A discharge cell is formed at a portion where the pair of scan electrode and sustain electrode intersects with the data electrode.
[0003]
In such a plasma display panel, the phosphor layer formed in each discharge cell is excited and emitted by vacuum ultraviolet rays having a wavelength of 147 nm generated by discharge, and color display is performed using the light emitted from the phosphor layer. ing.
[0004]
The phosphor material used as the phosphor layer is generally a europium-activated yttrium gadolinium borate phosphor (Y, Gd) BO 3 : Eu as a red phosphor, and a manganese-activated zinc silicate as a green phosphor. A phosphor Zn 2 SiO 4 : Mn is used, and a europium-activated barium magnesium aluminate phosphor BaMgAl 10 O 17 : Eu is used as a blue phosphor (see, for example, Patent Document 1).

[Patent Document 1]
Japanese Patent Laid-Open No. 2001-236893 [0006]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
By the way, in the manufacturing process of the plasma display panel, as a process of heating the phosphor, a process of forming a phosphor layer in which a phosphor material is applied and baked on the back substrate, and the front substrate and the back substrate are sealed. There is a heating process such as a sealing process. When passing through these heating steps, the BaMgAl 10 O 17 : Eu blue phosphor, in particular, has a problem that it is thermally deteriorated by heating in an air atmosphere and the luminance is lowered. This is because the divalent europium, which is an activator, is oxidized to trivalent by heat and does not function as a light emission center, so that light emission is weakened. As a result, the luminance of the plasma display panel is lowered. ing.
[0007]
As a result of intensive studies on the above problems, the present inventors have found that thermal degradation can be reduced by coating the blue phosphor particles with silicon oxide, but the amount of silicon oxide covering the blue phosphor particles is large. Thus, it has been found that when an image is displayed on the panel, a discharge error that does not cause a discharge variation or a discharge is likely to occur, and the discharge stability is deteriorated.
[0008]
The present invention has been made to solve such a problem, and an object of the present invention is to provide a plasma display panel having high brightness by suppressing thermal deterioration of a phosphor without impairing discharge stability. To do.
[0009]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to achieve the above object, a plasma display panel of the present invention comprises a phosphor layer formed using a europium activated aluminate phosphor whose surface is coated with silicon oxide, and the weight ratio of the silicon oxide is , 0.2 wt% or less based on the europium activated aluminate phosphor.
[0010]
In addition, the plasma display panel of the present invention includes a phosphor layer formed using a europium activated aluminate phosphor whose surface is coated with silicon oxide, and the amount of the silicon oxide is determined based on the europium activated aluminate. It is characterized in that the charge amount of the salt phosphor is set in a range in which the positive polarity is obtained.

The electrode arrangement of such a plasma display panel is shown in FIG. 4, in which M rows of scan electrodes SCN 1 to SCN M and sustain electrodes SUS 1 to SUS M are arranged in the row direction, and N columns in the column direction. Data electrodes D 1 to DN are arranged. A discharge cell is formed at a portion where a pair of scan electrode SCN i and sustain electrode SUS i (i = 1 to M) intersects with one data electrode D j (j = 1 to N). M × N are formed.
[0018]
Next, a method for driving the plasma display panel will be described. The plasma display panel divides one field period of a video signal into a plurality of subfields having luminance weights, and discharges the discharge cells a number of times corresponding to the luminance weighting in each subfield. A driving method for expressing the gradation of a video signal by combining subfields that cause discharge is used. For example, 256 gray scales can be displayed by configuring one field period with eight subfields having different luminance weights. FIG. 5 is an example of a waveform diagram showing a driving method of the plasma display panel, and represents one subfield.
[0019]
As shown in FIG. 5, in the write period, all the sustain electrodes SUS 1 to SUS M are held at 0 (V), and positive write is performed on a predetermined data electrode D j corresponding to the discharge cell displayed in the first row. applying a pulse voltage + Vw (V), of the application of a negative scan pulse voltage -Vs (V) to the scan electrodes SCN 1 in the first row, and the scanning electrode SCN 1 of the predetermined data electrode D j and the first row Write discharge occurs in the discharge cells at the intersection.
[0020]
Next, a positive write pulse voltage + Vw (V) is applied to a predetermined data electrode D j corresponding to a discharge cell to be displayed in the second row, and a negative scan pulse voltage −Vs is applied to the scan electrode SCN 2 in the second row. When (V) is applied, an address discharge occurs in the discharge cell at the intersection of the predetermined data electrode D j and the scan electrode SCN 2 in the second row.
[0021]
Subsequently, the same operation as described above is sequentially performed from the third row to the Mth row, and an address discharge is generated in a desired discharge cell of each row. As described above, by generating the write discharge, a discharge cell for performing display discharge is selected, and the write period ends.
[0022]
In the next sustain period, all the scan electrodes SCN 1 to SCN M are once held at 0 (V), and when a negative sustain pulse voltage −Vm (V) is applied to all the sustain electrodes SUS 1 to SUS M , A sustain discharge occurs between scan electrode SCN i and sustain electrode SUS i in the discharge cell in which the write discharge has occurred. Subsequently, the negative sustain pulse voltage −Vm (V) is alternately applied to all the scan electrodes SCN 1 to SCN M and all the sustain electrodes SUS 1 to SUS M , thereby maintaining the discharge cells in which the write discharge has occurred. Discharging continues. Panel display is performed by the light emission of the sustain discharge.
[0023]
In the next erasing period, all the scan electrodes SCN 1 to SCN M are held at 0 (V), and when the erasing pulse voltage −Ve (V) is applied to all the sustain electrodes SUS 1 to SUS M , an erasing discharge is generated. Wake up and discharge stops.
[0024]
With the above operation, the operation in one subfield is completed, and a color image is displayed by repeating the same operation. Note that FIG. 5 shows an example in which one subfield is composed of an address period, a sustain period, and an erase period. However, in order to easily cause an address discharge, discharge is generated in all the discharge cells. An initialization period for performing an operation for forming charges therein may be provided before the writing period.
[0025]
The plasma display panel according to the present invention is particularly characterized by the structure of the blue phosphor, and the contents thereof will be described below.
[0026]
In the present embodiment, BaMgAl 10 O 17 : Eu is used as the blue phosphor, and the surface of the blue phosphor particles is covered with silicon oxide (SiO 2 ). Further, (Y, Gd) BO 3 : Eu is used as a red phosphor, and a phosphor obtained by mixing Zn 2 SiO 4 : Mn and YBO 3 : Tb is used as a green phosphor.
[0027]
Here, as a method of coating the surface of the blue phosphor particles with silicon oxide, a method of mixing the blue phosphor and silicon oxide together with a material such as a metal alkoxide can be used. For example, BaMgAl 10 O 17 : Eu blue phosphor powder and silicon oxide powder are placed in a solution of metal alkoxide ethyl silicate Si (O.C 2 H 5 ) 4 and ethyl alcohol C 2 H 5 OH. After stirring and washing, the surface of the blue phosphor particles can be covered with silicon oxide by firing at about 500 ° C. after dehydration and drying.

Next, specific examples of the present invention will be described.
[0033]
A panel in which a blue phosphor layer is formed using a phosphor obtained by coating the surface of particles of Ba 0.9 MgAl 10 O 17 : Eu 0.1 with 0.05 wt% silicon oxide as a blue phosphor (Example) ) Was produced. The blue phosphor Ba 0.9 MgAl 10 O 17 is not the particle surfaces are covered with silicon oxide: by using the Eu 0.1 was prepared a panel to form a blue phosphor layer (conventional example). Furthermore, as a blue phosphor, a panel in which a blue phosphor layer is formed using a phosphor in which the particle surface of Ba 0.9 MgAl 10 O 17 : Eu 0.1 is coated with 0.5 wt% silicon oxide ( Comparative example) was produced. And in each panel of an Example, a prior art example, and a comparative example, all the structures other than blue fluorescent substance were made the same. The light emission characteristics of each panel at this time are shown in Table 1.
[0034]
[Table 1]
[0035]
Here, the number Nt of discharge mistakes and the discharge variation ts in Table 1 were obtained as follows. That is, the following formula is generally used for evaluating discharge stability.
[0036]
Nt / N0 = exp (− (t−tf) / ts)
In this equation, Nt is the number of times that no discharge has occurred at time t (number of times of discharge failure), N0 is the number of times of measurement of the discharge delay time, tf is the delay in forming the discharge, and ts is the discharge variation. Here, the stability of discharge was evaluated by the number of discharge misses Nt and discharge variation ts.
[0037]
It can be said that as the value of ts, which is a parameter representing discharge variation, is smaller, the discharge variation is smaller. The large discharge variation indicates that the discharge does not start in a certain time with respect to the input, and the display quality is remarkably deteriorated. For the evaluation of the discharge error, the number of discharges (number of discharge errors) Nt was counted for 100 pulse inputs. For evaluation of the discharge variation ts, ts in the above formulas were relatively compared.
[0038]
From the results shown in Table 1, it can be seen that the brightness of the panel of the example and the panel of the comparative example is improved as compared with the panel of the conventional example. In other words, by coating the surface of the blue phosphor particles with silicon oxide, in the heating process such as the firing process or the panel sealing process when forming the phosphor layer, the blue phosphor activator is activated by the combustion heat. Since it is suppressed that a certain bivalent europium is oxidized to trivalent, it turns out that a luminance fall is suppressed.
[0039]
Further, it can be seen from Table 1 that in the panel of the comparative example, the number of discharge mistakes is one digit higher than that of the panel of the example, and the discharge variation is also increased. Moreover, about the chromaticity of blue fluorescent substance, the substantially same value is obtained with the panel of an Example, a prior art example, and a comparative example.
[0040]
Next, Ba 0.9 MgAl 10 O 17 : Eu 0.1 is used as the material of the blue phosphor, and the amount of silicon oxide (SiO 2 coating amount) covering the surface of the blue phosphor particles is different. Multiple types of blue phosphors were produced. And the panel which formed the fluorescent substance layer using each of various blue fluorescent substance was produced, and the frequency | count of discharge mistake and discharge variation of each panel were investigated. As a result, the relationship between the SiO 2 coating amount (% by weight), the number of discharge mistakes, and the discharge variation (relative value) is as shown in FIG. In FIG. 7, the bar graph represents the number of discharge misses, and the solid line represents the discharge variation. Regarding the luminance of the panel, if the surface of the blue phosphor particles was coated with silicon oxide, the luminance was higher than that of the conventional panel regardless of the SiO 2 coating amount.
[0041]
As can be seen from FIG. 7, when the SiO 2 coating amount exceeds 0.2% by weight, discharge mistakes and discharge variations increase rapidly, and the discharge becomes unstable, making it difficult to obtain excellent display quality. . Therefore, stable discharge and excellent display quality can be obtained by setting the SiO 2 coating amount to 0.2 wt% or less. The SiO 2 coating amount is preferably 0.01% by weight to 0.2% by weight.
[0042]
Here, the relationship between the amount of silicon oxide (SiO 2 coating amount) covering the particle surface of the blue phosphor and the charge amount of the phosphor was examined, and the results shown in FIG. 8 were obtained. According to FIG. 8, it can be seen that when the SiO 2 coating amount exceeds 0.2% by weight, the charge amount of the phosphor is negative. That is, when the surface potential of the phosphor is in a region having a negative polarity, the instability of discharge becomes remarkable, causing discharge variation, and stable driving becomes difficult. Accordingly, by using a blue phosphor whose charge amount of the phosphor coated with silicon oxide is positive, the plasma display panel has excellent discharge stability while suppressing thermal deterioration of the blue phosphor in the heating process. Can be obtained.
[0043]
In the above embodiment, the SiO 2 coating amount (% by weight) is the weight of silicon oxide with respect to the weight (W1) of the blue phosphor particles excluding the weight of silicon oxide in the blue phosphor coated with silicon oxide. The ratio (W2 / W1) of (W2).
[0044]
In the above embodiment, BaMgAl 10 O 17 : Eu is described as an example of the blue phosphor. However, the present invention can be applied to a blue phosphor having a composition other than this, for example, (Ba 0. 9 , Sr 0.05 ) MgAl 10 O 17 : Eu 0.1 , and the blue phosphor represented by Mn 0.01 can also achieve the same effects as described above by applying the present invention. In other words, the general formula (Ba 1-a, Sr b ) MgAl d O (3d + 4) / 2: Eu a, Mn c (0.03 ≦ a ≦ 0.2,0 ≦ b ≦ 0.1,0 ≦ c ≦ 0.05, d is an arbitrary integer of 10 to 16, and the europium activated aluminate phosphor has a particle surface of 0.2 wt% or less (preferably 0.01 wt% to 0.2 wt%). A high-luminance plasma display panel can be obtained without impairing discharge stability by using a blue phosphor obtained by coating with silicon oxide (wt%) as a material for the phosphor layer of the plasma display panel. Can do.
[0045]
【The invention's effect】
As described above, according to the present invention, a high-luminance plasma display panel can be obtained without impairing discharge stability.
