Abstract
質の均一性が向上された表示特性を有する強誘電性液晶
表示素子の製造方法を提供する。 【解決手段】 基板、電極層及び配向膜をそれぞれ有す
る下部構造体と上部構造体との間に形成されたセルに溶
融状態の強誘電性液晶を注入して密封する段階と、強誘
電性液晶がブックセルフ構造に対応する相遷移が得られ
るよう降温させる段階と、相遷移温度より高い温度から
相遷移温度以下の温度まで電極層に直流電位を印加する
段階と、直流電位印加を中断し所定温度以下まで降温さ
せる段階と、電極層に逆電圧を印加しつつ再び降温させ
る段階とから構成される。

形成させ画質を向上させうる強誘電性液晶表示素子の製
造方法に関する。

の相互作用を用いるため反応時間が数十msと遅くて動
映像を表示し難く、視野角が狭く、一定距離内ではピク
セル間のクロストークが発生してピクセルサイズを一定
サイズ以下に縮め難いという問題点がある。
電性液晶の自発分極と電気場との相互作用を用い、1m
s以下の早い応答特性を提供する。このような強誘電性
液晶表示素子は動映像表示に困難がなく、広い視野角を
提供し、分子間の強い相互作用によってクロストークが
発生しないピクセルサイズが一層縮まって高い解像度を
具現することができて次世代表示装置として活発な研究
がなされつつある。

ング方向について特定角度で傾きながらスメクチック層
間の間隔が縮まり、その結果体積の変化を補償するため
に液晶層内におけるスメクチック層の曲げが発生する。
このように曲げられた層構造をシェブロン構造と称し、
曲げの方向によって液晶の長軸の方向が相異なるドメイ
ンが形成され、その境界面にジグザグ欠陥、ヘアピン欠
陥、マウンテン欠陥などが存在する不均一な配向が得ら
れる。

に強制的に直流電圧を加える場合、液晶層内のイオンが
配向膜の表面に積もったり吸着され、以前表示状態から
現在表示状態に転換される際以前の表示パターンが鈍く
表示される残映現象が発生する問題点がある。
C(Anti ferroelectric liquid crystal)モードを提供
する強誘電性液晶素材が活発に研究されているが、自発
分極が100nC/cm2以上と逆分極電界によるイオ
ンの移動によってやはり残像が発生する場合がある。ま
た、薄膜トランジスタ(TFT)を用いて各画素毎に独立的
に液晶を駆動させる方式であるアクチブマトリックス駆
動方式を適用する場合大きい自発分極によって漏れ電流
が発生する場合がある。AFLCの漏れ電流を抑えるた
めにはキャパシタの容量を極めて大きくすべきである
が、この場合開口率が減少して表示装置として利用し難
い問題点を抱えている。

非印加時液晶の光軸が配向膜のラビング方向に並んだ方
向に位置し、正電位(+)印加時印加電位のレベルに対応
して液晶の長軸が最大45°までチルトされる。図にお
いて、Vsatは液晶の最大チルトを発生させる飽和電
圧を示したものである。

ックC相に相遷移する際液晶分子のチルト角が増加する
過程で層収縮が発生し、この際層収縮を補償するための
液晶の配列過程において表示状態で明るさ差を引き起こ
す非均一なドメインが形成される問題点がある。

性が向上された表示特性を有する強誘電性液晶表示素子
の製造方法を提供するところにある。

構造体をそれぞれ形成する段階と、前記下部構造体と前
記上部構造体との間にセルを形成させる段階と、前記セ
ルに溶融状態の所定の強誘電性液晶を注入して密封する
段階と、前記強誘電性液晶がブックシェルフ構造に対応
する相遷移が得られるよう降温させる段階と、前記相遷
移温度より高い第1温度から前記相遷移温度以下の第2
温度まで前記電極層に所定の第1直流電位を印加する段
階と、前記第1直流電位印加を中断し前記第2温度より
低い第3温度まで降温させる段階と、前記電極層に前記
第1直流電位と極性が逆の第2直流電位を前記電極層に
印加しつつ前記第3温度より低い第4温度まで降温させ
る段階とを含む。

準に左(L)方向と右(R)方向との距離によるエネルギー
差(ΔE)が極めて小さくて、結晶化過程を経れば液晶分
子24aは左(L)方向と右(R)方向に沿って均一に分布
し、その結果非均一なドメインが形成される。ここで、
エネルギー差(ΔE)はγsin(2θ)と表現でき、γは液
晶の配向膜との固着エネルギー(Anchoring energy)であ
り、θは液晶分子の回動コーン上における液晶分子の回
動角である。

とが分かる。参考に、図8の写真の液晶表示素子はスメ
クチックC相遷移温度(72℃)より高い74℃から70
℃まで8Vの直流電圧を印加し、70℃から68℃まで
は電位非印加状態で降温だけ行ない、その後68℃から
30℃まで降温と共に逆電圧(-8V)を印加する過程を
経て生成された。また、セルギャップは1.5μmであ
った。

大きさは液晶層のセルギャップ及び適用される液晶分子
の電位に対する反応特性によって適切な範囲内で決定す
ることが望ましい。

Claims (5)
- 【請求項1】 基板、電極層、配向膜を有する下部構造
体及び上部構造体をそれぞれ形成する段階と、 前記下部構造体と前記上部構造体との間にセルを形成さ
せる段階と、 前記セルに溶融状態の所定の強誘電性液晶を注入して密
封する段階と、 前記強誘電性液晶がブックシェルフ構造に対応する相遷
移が得られるよう降温させる段階と、 前記相遷移温度より高い第1温度から前記相遷移温度以
下の第2温度まで前記電極層に所定の第1直流電位を印
加する段階と、 前記第1直流電位印加を中断し前記第2温度より低い第
3温度まで降温させる段階と、 前記電極層に前記第1直流電位と極性が逆の第2直流電
位を前記電極層に印加しつつ前記第3温度より低い第4
