Abstract

的に相殺された波長を有するポンプ放出器を具備してい
る。放出器の相殺された波長は、レーザ又は増幅器の温
度安定度を高めるために選択される。ある代表的な実施
例では、レーザ又は増幅器は、放出器の2項分布によっ
て励起される。

び増幅器に関する、特に、温度安定度が向上した導波路
レーザ及び増幅器に関する。
ステムにおいて重要な構成要素である。それらは、送信
機、受信機及び中間増幅器において重要な構成要素であ
る。そのような構成要素のなかで、レーザ及び増幅器
が、波長と電力の両方において安定していることが重要
である。
又は増幅器は、エルビウム又はイッテルビウムあるいそ
の両方のように、1つ又は複数の希土類元素ドーパント
でドーピングされた、ある長さのガラス光ファイバを含
んでいる。ドーピングされたファイバは希土類元素ドー
パントによる吸収帯域を持ち、それは、発光ダイオード
のような複数の半導体光放出器からの光によって励起さ
れる。レーザ又は増幅器の効率は、ファイバの吸収帯域
とポンプ放出器の出力スペクトルとの間の重複度に依存
する。
器の難点は、温度の変化に対する、それらの感受性であ
る。放出器の温度上昇に伴って、それらの出力スペクト
ルが高い波長に移行する。同時に、それらの出力電力が
低下する。そうした変動は、レーザ又は増幅器の出力電
力、及び、それらを使用している送信機又は受信機の応
答性を変えてしまう。従って、温度安定度が向上した導
波路レーザ及び増幅器が必要になる。
吸収波長を有する導波路レーザ又は増幅器は、ピーク吸
収波長から意図的に波長のオフセットを有するポンプ放
出器を具備している。放出器のオフセット波長は、レー
ザ又は増幅器の温度安定度を向上するために、選択され
ている。ある代表的な実施例では、ピーク吸収を有する
レーザ又は増幅器は、導波路吸収ピークの短い波長側と
長い波長側とに出力ピークを持つ、放出器の2項分布に
よって励起される。
般的な吸収スペクトルを示す。975nmにおけるピー
クの最大値の半分の幅が数nmの単位である。これは、
単一ダイオードの出力(一般的に約6nm)よりも、か
なり狭い。図から分かるように、初期の975nmのダ
イオード出力スペクトルが、波長に関して吸収ピークか
ら変位すると、増幅器の出力電力が低下すると思われ
る。一般的なダイオードのスペクトル出力は、1℃につ
き0.5nmも変わる。全てのダイオードが、ファイバ
の単位長での最大吸収に対して975nmで選択される
と、増幅器は、僅かな温度変化の場合でも、出力スペク
トルをピーク吸収から変位させるように、温度変化に対
して非常に敏感になる。
力は、温度の影響も受ける。ダイオードの温度を上昇し
た時、駆動電流を一定に維持すると、出力電力が低下す
る。
吸収ピークから意図的にオフセットをもつ出力ピークを
有している。一般的に、オフセット量はピーク吸収波長
の0.5%〜1%の範囲になる。この選択は、温度が変
動する時に、オフセットダイオードが、吸収ピークと重
なるように移行して、温度変動を補償するために行われ
る。例えば、温度が、ある中心点(すなわち、25℃)
より下でドリフトすると、吸収ピークより長い放出波長
のダイオードは、ピークと更に重なるように下方に移行
し、ピークの一方の側でダイオードを補償して、ピーク
を更に移行させる。導波路の吸収ピークの非対称性のた
めに、ダイオード電力の50〜80%は、効果的に、ピ
ーク吸収波長の短い波長側にある。
値モデルを使うと、温度に関する増幅器出力電力の最小
限度の反応性を達成するために、ダイオード波長の分布
を最適化することができる。
る代表的な導波路光増幅器10の略図である。図2Aは
縦方向の図、図2B〜2Eは関連する断面図を示す。増
幅器10は、Er+3やYb+3のような希土類元素ド
ーパントでドーピングした、又は、それらのドーパント
の混合物でドーピングした、ある長さの光導波路15を
含んでいる。効果的に、それはクラッディング・ポンプ
・ファイバ増幅器である。

ゲイン媒体を形成する単一モードのコア16を含んだガ
ラス光ファイバである。コア16は、屈折率が低いクラ
ッディング18の外部層とクラッディング17の第1の
層の内部に位置している。外部クラッディング18は、
フッ素化した、低いインデックスのポリマーから製造す
ることもできる。二重クラッディング構造が、ポンプ光
の導波動作を確実にする。

によって励起される。
形状のファイバ束13は、複数の多重モード入力ファイ
バ11(ここでは6)と、増幅される信号を搬送する単
一モード・ファイバ31とを含んでいる。ファイバ11
と31は、クラッディング・ポンプ・ファイバ15のサ
イズと開口数(N.A.)とに相応するように、下方に
先細り形状の単一構造部13で互いに溶融する。一般的
に、ドーピングしたファイバ15の長さは、ポンプ光の
少なくとも90%がドーピングしたコアによって吸収さ
れるように選択されている。図2Cと2Bは、ファイバ
11と31の断面を示す。
り短い第1の比較的短い波長でポンプ光を生成する放出
器9Aと、ピーク吸収波長より長い第2の比較的長い波
長でポンプ光を生成する放出器9Bとを含んでいる。第
1と第2の波長は、増幅器の温度反応性を低下させる、
ポンプ光波長の2項分布を呈する。代表的な例として、
___nmにピーク吸収波長を有するドーピングしたフ
ァイバの場合に、放出器9Aは970nmになり、放出
器9Bは978nmになる。望ましくは、放出器の2/
3が970nmで、1/3が978である。

から成る光学的空洞部20を備えていることを除けば、
基本的に、図2の増幅器と同じである。

のでは、多くのダイオードが、二つの異なる波長の各々
にある(2/3が965nm、1/3が975nm)。
ポンプ光の吸収は、全てのダイオードが975nmの時
に最高になるが、第一の構成は温度に対して非常に敏感
になる。バイモダル解法は、他方で、長い長さのファイ
バが望ましいポンプ吸収とするために必要であるが、温
度に対して非常に無感応になる。これらの結果に基づい
て、ポンプ・ダイオードは、最大吸収に関して移行した
ピーク・ブルーとレッドとをもつ二つのグループに分け
られる。増幅器又はレーザは、各々希土類元素のドーピ
ングされたファイバ部15を励起するダイオードが二つ
の波長の分布の間で分かれるように形成されている。モ
デルは、各々の波長にあるべきダイオードの数を微調整
するために使用することもできる。
温度によるダイオード出力電力の変動と温度によるダイ
オード波長の変動とである。二つの作用が互いに相殺す
るように、ダイオードのサブセットを選ぶための手法に
ついて次に述べる。

れる温度非反応性の度合いを定量化する最小感度(FO

Abs(T)とすると、平均吸収は下記で表される。

の関数としてのダイオード(中心)波長であり、A
(λ)は、ダイオード波長λの関数としての、ある長さ
のファイバで吸収されたポンプのフラクション(fra
ction)である。そこで、iで示した、単一ダイオ
ードからの、ファイバの総ポンプ吸収は下記のように表
される。 Absi(T) = Pi(T)*A(λi(T)) Abs(T) − P(T)*A(λ(T)) 及び、インデックスiで示すダイオードのグループは、
下記のように表される。 Abs(T) = [Pi(T)*A(λi(T))]
(T)を制御できないが、ある基準温度のポンプ波長に
基づいてダイオードを選択すると、A(λ(T))に影
響を及ぼすことができる。このことは、λに対するAの
依存性が、異なる波長範囲で大きく異なることを示す図
5に図示されている。目標は、必要とする温度の範囲
(ΔT)の全体にわたって、Abs(T)をできるだけ
ほぼ一定にするように、個々のλiを選択することであ
る。ΔTが十分に小さければ、三つの関数P、λ、Aの
全てが、その温度範囲内でほぼ直線になり、問題は、次
の微分式のみ考慮することで処理できる。

波長範囲Δλも増加し、A(λ)は温度範囲全体にわた
って、もはや直線に近いと言えない。従って、λiは、
A(λ)(第2の導関数)の曲率だけでなく傾きも調整
するように選択されなければならない。どのくらい本手
法が望ましい温度反応性を達成するかは、達成したFO
M値から決まる。

る。図6Bの結果から、波長の移行につれて、非常に直
線的な吸収反応になっている。この場合、二つの波長に
おけるダイオードの数は、同じではない。
現できる、多くの可能性のある特別な実施例のなかの僅
かな事例を示していることを理解すべきである。多くの
異なる他の構成が、本発明の趣旨と範囲から逸脱せずに
当業者が容易に考案できる。

Claims (5)
- 【請求項1】 光導波路レーザ又は増幅器であって、 ピーク吸収波長を有する、ある長さの希土類元素でドー
ピングされた光導波路と、 前記の吸収ピークの短い方の波長側に0.5〜1.0%
だけ前記のピーク吸収波長から出力波長のオフセットを
有する、第一の複数の半導体ポンプ放出器と、 前記の吸収ピークの長い方の波長側に0.5〜1.0%
だけ前記のピーク吸収波長から相殺された出力波長を有
する、第二の複数の半導体ポンプ放出器とを含んでい
る、光導波路レーザ又は増幅器。 - 【請求項2】 前記の第一の複数のポンプ放出器が前記
のポンプ電力の50〜80%を生成する、請求項1に記
載の光導波路レーザ又は増幅器。 - 【請求項3】 前記の光導波路がエルビウムでドーピン
グされている、請求項1に記載の光導波路レーザ又は増
幅器。 - 【請求項4】 前記の光導波路がイッテルビウムでドー
ピングされている、請求項1に記載の光導波路レーザ又
は増幅器。 - 【請求項5】 前記の光導波路がエルビウムとイッテル
ビウムで複合ドーピングされている、請求項1に記載の
光導波路レーザ又は増幅器。
