【発明の詳細な説明】
【０００１】
【発明の属する技術分野】本発明は、概して、ネットワ
ーク管理に関し、特に、管理ネットワーク環境のノード
のビューの動的な生成に関する。
【０００２】
【従来の技術】簡易型ネットワーク管理プロトコル（Ｓ
ＮＭＰ）および共通管理情報プロトコル（ＣＭＩＰ）
は、汎用メカニズム、すなわち、それによって異なるメ
ーカの機器がＵＮＩＸサーバ等の管理システムから監視
および制御されることが可能になる汎用メカニズムを提
供するネットワーク管理プロトコルである。管理ネット
ワーク上のネットワーク要素に対し、管理プロトコルを
使用してネットワーク上のネットワーク要素間の管理情
報を通信することにより、監視および制御を行うことが
できる。ネットワーク要素には、ネットワーク化された
パーソナル・コンピュータ、ワークステーション、サー
バ、ルータおよびブリッジ等がある。障害管理、構成管
理、セキュリティ管理、性能管理および会計管理を含む
ネットワーク管理のキー領域がいくつか存在する。ネッ
トワークは、ネットワーク要素にイベントを報告させる
ことができ、ネットワーク要素上のプロセスを起動する
ことができると共に、システム内の変化する状況に適合
するよう操作されることが可能である。
【０００３】種々のネットワーク・デバイスがそれによ
って管理システムと通信するキー・メカニズムは、ＳＮ
ＭＰトラップまたはＣＭＩＰイベントを介している。以
下、「イベント」は、ＳＮＭＰトラップまたはＣＭＩＰ
イベントのいずれかを指すために使用する。イベントに
より、求められたわけではない通知があるネットワーク
・デバイスから他のネットワーク・デバイスに送信され
る。この同じメカニズムは、管理システム内の種々の協
調型ソフトウエア要素間の通信に使用することができ
る。
【０００４】イベントを受信してユーザがネットワーク
・デバイスを管理することを可能にするいくつかのソフ
トウエア製品がある。これらの製品の１つである、Hewl
ett-Packard 社のネットワーク・ノード・マネージャ
（Ｎｅｔｗｏｒｋ ＮｏｄｅＭａｎａｇｅｒ、ＮＮＭ）

グラフィカルに表示すると共に、グラフィカル・ユーザ
・インタフェース（ＧＵＩ）を使用して、ネットワーク
・デバイスを管理することができる。以下、「ＮＮＭ」
は、概して、ネットワーク・ノード・マネージャなど
の、イベントを受信してユーザがネットワーク・デバイ
スを管理することが可能となる製品を指すために使用す
る。ユーザは、ＮＮＭコンソールから、ネットワーク上
のネットワーク・デバイスをすべて発見して表示するこ
とができると共に、ネットワーク上のすべてのサーバを
積極的に（proactively）監視および管理することがで
きる。これにより、ネットワーク状態を判断すること、
または、例えば失敗したプリント・ジョブのパスを辿り
その失敗があった地点を判断することが容易になる。ユ
ーザにとって、ネットワークがどのように構成されてい
るかの判断が容易であるため、ネットワーク・デバイス
を管理し構成を最適化することが容易である。例えば、
プリント・サーバ毎の印刷待ち行列の数またはファイル
・サーバ毎のプリント・サーバの数のバランスをとるこ
とにより、構成を最適化することができる。ＮＮＭによ
って、ネットウェア（NetWare）・ファイル・サーバ、
プリント・サーバ、印刷待ち行列およびプリンタなどの
あらゆるネットワーク・デバイスを管理することができ
る。ネットワーク・デバイスは、ＮＮＭの初期化中に、
自動的に発見されトポロジ・データベースに加えられ
る。各ネットワーク・デバイスは、ＮＮＭコンソール上
のアイコンによりグラフィカルに表示される。
【０００５】すべてのイベントには、ユーザが取り消す
ことができるデフォルト（省略時）の重大度（severit
y）が割当てられている。ＮＮＭは、ユーザが構成可能
な情報のために登録ファイルを利用する。特定のネット
ワーク・デバイスに対応する、ＮＮＭによって受信され
る各イベントの重大度レベルは、一意の色によって表示
される。ネットワーク・デバイスの重大度レベルは、ネ
ットワーク・デバイスのアイコンの色によってＮＮＭコ
ンソール上に示される。クリティカルなイベントは、赤
のアイコンで描かれる。例えば、ＮＮＭマップ上のネッ
トワーク・デバイスアイコンの色が赤に変わって、その
ネットワーク・デバイスに関連するクリティカルな状態
を示すとき、デフォルトとして、クリティカルなイベン
トがユーザに示される。このように、ユーザは、ネット
ワーク・デバイス・アイコンの色による状態表示を使用

・アイコンで、グラフィカルに表示される。ユーザは、
リモートに、すべてのネットワーク・プリンタの「健
康」状態を視覚的に判断することができる。プリンタが
修理の必要があるか否か、または人間の介入が必要であ
るか否かを判断するために、ネットワーク・プリンタの
ＬＥＤ状態を参照することができる。例えば、プリンタ
が以下の問題のいずれかを有しているかを判断すること
ができる。すなわち、用紙切れ、インク切れ、用紙詰ま
り、ドア・オープン、トナー残量低下、プリンタ問題、
およびビンあふれ（full）といった問題である。

すサーバ・アイコンによってグラフィカルに表される。
適当なエージェント・ソフトウエアを実行するサーバ
は、ユーザがＮＮＭコンソールから管理することができ

バは、ＮＮＭコンソールからの管理データ要求に応答

るマップ内に自動的にグループ化される。グループ・ビ
ューは、ノードビュー・コード自体に対してハードワイ

により、ネットワーク・デバイスをグラフィカルに表示
するデバイス中心のグループ・ビュー８０を示す。ユー
ザ・インタフェース８２には、バックグラウンド９１、
すなわちアメリカ合衆国の地図上に表示されたネットワ
ークが含まれる。最上位ネットワークは、インターネッ
ト・アイコン８４によって表される。ネットワークのグ
ループ・ビューは、NW-Serversアイコン９０、NT-Serve
rsアイコン９２、Web-Serversアイコン８６、HP-Printe
rsアイコン８８およびDMI-Clientsアイコン９４によっ
て表示される。ネットワーク・デバイスの発見中に、関
連するネットワーク・デバイスが、グループ・ビュー・
アイコンによって表されるグループ・ビューに自動的に
グループ化されるため、上記グループ・ビュー構成はデ
バイス中心と考えられる。グループ・アイコン上をダブ
ル・クリックすることにより、トポロジ・データベース
内で予め発見された関連デバイスをすべて示すマップ

ードビューによって提供されるグループ・ビューの各々
について一貫して同じのままである。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】従来技術において、グ
ループ・ビューは、ノードビュー・コード自体に対して
ハードワイヤード（ハードウェアに組み込まれている）
となっている。これは、ノードビューのユーザが、グル
ープ・ビューについて自身で選択することができないだ
けでなく、選択を動的に更新することができないことを
意味している。従って、この技術分野において、ユーザ
がグループ・ビュー情報を動的に構成することができる
ようにすることに対する、満たされていない要求があ
る。さらに、メニューバー、ポップアップ・メニューお
よびツールバーは、選択されたグループ・ビューについ

ープ・ビューの更新されたリストを表示する、ことを含
むグループ・ビューを動的に生成する方法。

の前記変更されたグループ・ビューを含む複数のグルー

前記ユーザ・インタフェースの１または複数のユーザ・
インタフェース・メカニズムを変更する（５６）ことを

    プ・ビュー属性を含む複数のグループ・ビューのリスト
    を表示し、 前記複数のグループ・ビューに新たなグループ・ビュー
    の追加を選択し、 前記新たなグループ・ビューの複数のグループ・ビュー
    属性を入力し、 前記複数のグループ・ビューに前記新たなグループ・ビ
    ューを追加し、 前記新たなグループ・ビューを含む複数のグループ・ビ
    ューの更新されたリストを表示する、ことを含むグルー
    プ・ビューを動的に生成する方法。
