Description

“Strumenti a percussione a modulazione timbrica pneumatica,   "Percussion instruments with pneumatic timbral modulation,

con pompa a pedali.”  with pedal pump. "

Lo stato della tecnica  The state of the art

All percussion musical instruments, widely used in all places on the planet, at all latitudes, are generally provided with a "struck" part which is represented by an animal skin, an artificial membrane, a wood or metal sheet or plastic, pipes or other, and a “striker” part which is made up of one or more sticks made of wood, metal, plastic or parts of the body, generally the hands or feet.

During the percussion the musician beats with the percussion element on the musical instrument (or vice versa) producing a sound that can vary according to various components which can be summarized as:

‐ la  consistenza  e  lo  stato  di  tensione  dell’elemento  vibrante  dello  strumento  (pelli, plastiche, legni…);  - the consistency and state of tension of the vibrating element of the instrument (skins, plastics, woods ...);

‐ la forza con cui è impresso il colpo percussore;  - the force with which the firing pin is struck;

‐ il  punto  di  contatto  delle  due  parti  (rispetto  agli  altri  punti  possibili  sulla  superficie dell’elemento vibrante);  - the point of contact of the two parts (with respect to the other possible points on the surface of the vibrating element);

‐ la direzione del colpo (perpendicolare o inclinata rispetto al piano da colpire);  ‐ la cassa di risonanza dello strumento musicale (se presente);  - the direction of the blow (perpendicular or inclined with respect to the plane to be hit); - the sounding board of the musical instrument (if present);

‐ l’ambiente circostante.  - the surrounding environment.

For almost all the aforementioned elements the difference is made by the quality of the instrument and the skill of the musician. A well-aimed and measured blow on a vibrating element in excellent condition mathematically guarantees a correct degree of volume and frequency of the sound produced. The same cannot be said for the last of the elements considered, the external environment which, depending on the conditions of humidity and temperature, can considerably influence the emission of a correct modulation of sounds for most percussion instruments, compromising the potential in a sensitive way.

Depending on a correct modulation of all the elements, there will be or not a tonal variation of the instrument in a considered time interval, unfortunately sometimes during the same piece of music. This is a major limitation to the use of instruments for the production of constant harmonic tones over the course of a performance. In fact, often during the sound emission one perceives, in addition to the decrease in volume, also a decrease in the pitch of the sound of the instrument. The reason for this phenomenon is that after a certain interval of time due to atmospheric agents (humidity and temperature) or gradual sagging of the body of the instrument, a lowering of frequency and amplitude of the sound produced is determined, an extremely unpleasant result for those who is a professional musician.

Another major limitation of traditional percussion instruments is that they cannot modulate the physical and mechanical characteristics of the vibrating element during use of the instrument. All the instruments that mount natural leathers, artificial membranes, foils or rigid elements, allow adjustments (generally with special keys or by means of stoves or other sources of heat input) that can be made at most between a piece and the other but not without difficulty since they require an excellent "ear" for the correct distribution of the tension on the vibrating element with the result that often the tuning is altered due to the difficulty of adjustment. Musical instruments such as: congas, bongo, cajòn, darabouka, surdo, frame drums, timbales, batà, pandeiro, djembe, bodhran and similar cannot easily modulate the tonal variation during use and are tuned before starting to play, where possible. Most of them, in fact, do not allow any adjustment as the vibrating element is permanently fixed to the body of the instrument.

Il sistema proposto  The proposed system

The components that are part of this utility model allow these changes in such a short time that they can be inserted within the same piece to modulate the tones of the instrument on the same series of strokes. An air chamber system allows the musician to be able to vary the range of tones very quickly by mechanically acting on the vibrating element which, keeping the intensity and rhythm of the percussion constant on it, will vary the frequency and amplitude of the sound produced in function of the command given by the musician.

Le componenti del sistema  The components of the system

Il presente modello di utilità è composto da due componenti principali:  This utility model consists of two main components:

1. Pompa a pedali con doppia leva per la mandata e lo sgonfiaggio;  1. Pedal pump with double lever for delivery and deflation;

2. Strumento musicale utilizzatore, provvisto di camera d’aria.  La pompa a pedale è costituita da:  2. User musical instrument, equipped with an air chamber. The foot pump consists of:

‐ Un pedale di mandata con pompa pneumatica da circa 160cc.;  - A delivery pedal with pneumatic pump of about 160cc .;

‐ Un  pedale  di  sgonfiaggio  con  valvola  tipo  Schrader  (stelo  in metallo  dritto  da  Ø  8 mm);  - A deflation pedal with Schrader type valve (Ø 8 mm straight metal stem);

‐ Raccorderia con tubazione gommata, diametro esterno da Ø 8 mm;  - Fittings with rubberized tubing, external diameter from Ø 8 mm;

- Coupling element with locking lever for Schrader type valves (straight metal stem Ø 8 mm).

Lo  strumento  musicale  (nell’esempio  un  tamburo  a  cornice)  è  fondamentalmente  costituito da:  The musical instrument (in the example a frame drum) is basically made up of:

‐ Corpo dello strumento;  - Instrument body;

‐ Elemento vibrante;  - Vibrating element;

‐ Camera d’aria con valvola tipo Schrader (stelo in metallo dritto da Ø 8 mm);  - Air chamber with Schrader type valve (Ø 8 mm straight metal stem);

Il funzionamento del sistema  The functioning of the system

The proposed system is based on a very simple concept: making the voltage applied to the vibrating element easily and quickly modulated. To do this, it is necessary to intervene on the instrument and exactly in the vicinity of the locking line of the vibrating element where an air chamber proportionate to the circumference / perimeter of the instrument is placed, with the valve facing the inside of the instrument body. The air chamber is housed in such a way as to follow the perimeter of the vibrating element which will thus be entirely placed on it, without interruption. This will ensure a uniform distribution of the stress states on the vibrating element during the inflation and deflation phases.

In fact, by connecting the aforementioned valve with the second element of the system, that is the pneumatic pump with two pedals, the musician will be able to:

1. Act on the first pedal to pump air inside the air chamber and increase the pressure acting on the vibrating element which will tense more and more, raising the tones of the sounds emitted with sensitive variations of the acoustic frequencies and reproducing notes gradually more acute; 2. Act on the second pedal to release the air contained inside the air chamber and decrease the pressure acting on the vibrating element which will release itself more and more, lowering the tones of the sounds emitted with sensitive variations of the acoustic frequencies and playing gradually lower notes.

Such a system allows to embrace a range of tones unthinkable for such musical instruments that historically arise as “not tunable”. Furthermore, the system remains under pressure for as long as desired since it is equipped with valves that do not allow any release or return of air, always guaranteeing a constant tone for that particular stress state. The possibility of being able to reach with a single instrument the own tones (for mechanics and geometry) of instruments of various sizes, allows a versatility of use never seen before. To give an example: a frame drum with an average diameter (as in the graphic example) equal to 12 inches, can cover a range of sounds possible with drums from 10 inches up to 20 inches and more in a time interval of some second or fraction of it.

This eliminates any form of accidental tonal variation due to the presence of humidity in the environment, temperature variation or voltage drop of the instrument, as the musician can immediately intervene on the vibrating element by correcting its tension with a simple touch of the pedal. This system therefore facilitates musicians who have to transport the instrumentation to the place of performance, allowing all models of the same instrument with different sections to be left in the studio.

Due to the foregoing, the insertion of only the air chamber with a negligible increase in the weight of the instrument amply justifies its use. A necessary and sufficient condition for the system to be effective is that the pedal pump always remains connected to the instrument through the rubber tubing. The right length of the pipe allows (also considering the low weight) all the movements necessary for the use of the instrument and any stage choreography. In the case of a moving performance (parades or parades) the musician can implement the system with the aid of a small portable pump, given the possibility of universal attachment of the Schrader valve.

" General definition Percussion instruments with pneumatic timbral modulation have constructive characteristics common to all existing percussion instruments and do not necessarily have visible characterizing peculiarities. However, they can be modulated in the emission of the timbre of the sounds emitted by a pneumatic system with a pedal pump that can vary the tones during use. The pneumatic system is operated by the percussionist according to the desired tones during the performance of the piece. Characterizing definition Percussion instruments with pneumatic timbral modulation integrate an air chamber and a pneumatic pedal pump into the construction system. The two components are connected with a rubber tube that transmits the supply air in one direction and the deflation air in the opposite direction. The possibility of adjusting the timbre of the instrument is performed by the two pedals of the pump that allow the inflation and deflation of the air chamber inserted in the percussion instrument.
