of the industrial invention entitled:

"Packet of smoking items."

The present invention relates to a package of smoking articles. In the following discussion, reference will be made, in particular and by way of example, to the “rigid” packets of cigarettes, without losing generality.

A known rigid packet of cigarettes is obtained by folding one or more flat blanks of pre-weakened and pre-cut cardboard and consists mainly of a container open at one end, a lid, hinged to an end edge of the container, and by a collar fixed inside the container.

Generally, conventional rigid packages develop along a prevailing longitudinal axis and include a front wall, a rear wall, two sides, a head wall and a bottom wall. The front wall and the rear wall are connected to the two sides by respective edges (with sharp or rounded or blunt edges), parallel to the prevailing longitudinal development axis.

In order to make conventional rigid packages more attractive from an aesthetic point of view, it was decided to vary the shape of the package and, in particular, the conformation of the aforementioned edges connecting the front wall and the rear wall with the respective sides.

However, a variation in the conformation of the aforementioned parallel edges could entail a variation of the outer perimeter of the package along a cross section of the prevailing longitudinal development axis, entailing various drawbacks from the point of view of the packaging of the package itself.

The purpose of the present invention is to make a packet of cigarettes capable of solving the aforementioned drawback, that is, to make a packet that combines a particular conformation of its longitudinal edges, parallel to the prevailing development axis, while maintaining an external perimeter equal to the perimeter of a conventional package.

According to the present invention, a packet of cigarettes for smoking articles is produced according to the characteristics reported in independent claim 1.

The present invention will now be described with reference to the annexed drawings which illustrate a non-limiting example of embodiment thereof, in which: - figure 1 is a perspective view of a first embodiment of a package according to the present invention in a closed configuration; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the package of Figure 1 in an open configuration;

Figure 3 illustrates a detail of Figure 2 in a further perspective view;

Figure 4 is a perspective view of a second embodiment of the package according to the present invention in a closed configuration; Figure 5 is a perspective view of a third embodiment of the package according to the present invention in a closed configuration; Figure 6 illustrates the package of Figure 5 in a side view;

With 1 is indicated as a whole a package of substantially parallelepiped shape, in particular with a rectangular section, whose longitudinal axis of prevailing development is indicated with A.

The package 1 comprises four side walls defining a front wall 2, a rear wall 3 and a pair of sides 4 and 5.

In particular, the front wall 2 and the rear wall 3 are two side walls of greater extension with respect to the sides 4 and 5 which are two side walls of lesser extension.

Furthermore, the package 1 comprises a bottom wall 6 and a head wall 7.

Each side 4 and 5 of the package 1 is joined to the front wall 2 and to the rear wall 3 by respective connecting edges 8, 9, 10, 11.

More precisely, with the numerical reference 8 and 9 the connecting edges of the front wall 2 are identified respectively with the sides 4 and 5 and with the numerical reference 10 and 11 the connecting edges of the rear wall 3 respectively with the sides 4 are identified and 5.

The packet 1 comprises a container 12 for housing a group of cigarettes 13 and a lid 14 hinged to the container 12 along a hinge line 15.

The hinge line 15 is arranged in correspondence with the rear wall 3 and allows the packet 1 to pass from a closed position to an open position, and vice versa, by rotating the lid 14 around the line 15 itself.

A collar 16 is fixed inside the container 12 at least in correspondence with the front wall 2.

Preferably, the collar 16 is fixed inside the container 12 in correspondence with the front wall 2 and the sides 4 and 5.

It should be noted that the different embodiments of the package 1 illustrated in Figures 1 to 8 have common technical characteristics which will be described hereinafter and which will be subsequently recalled respecting the numerical references introduced here.

In particular, the packet 1 comprises along each of the connecting edges 8, 9, 10, 11 at least one angular wall 17 which has a variable transversal dimension along a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis A.

Each angular wall 17 is defined by its own lateral edges 18 which develop by diverging starting from at least a first common vertex 19, provided along the respective connecting edge 8, 9, 10 and 11, and converging at least on a second common vertex 20 , also provided along the same connecting edge 8, 9, 10 and 11.

The lateral edges 18 of the corner walls 17, adjacent to the front wall 2 and to the two sides 4 and 5, extend at least along a portion respectively of the front wall 2 and of each of the two sides 4 and 5. The side edges 18 of the corner walls 17, adjacent to the rear wall 3 and to the two sides 4 and 5, extend at least along a portion of the rear wall 3 and of each of the two sides 4 and 5 respectively.

In this way, the aforementioned connecting edges 8, 9, 10, 11 define, for each side wall 3, 4, 5 and 6, at least limitedly to the aforementioned portion affected by the lateral edges 18 of the corner walls 17 and between the lateral edges 18 of two adjacent corner walls 17 and at the same height with respect to the longitudinal axis A, a deformation that extends towards the outside of the overall dimensions of the package 1.

The outward deformation of the packet 1 compensates for the deformation generated by each angular wall 17, thus maintaining the perimeter extension of each transverse section of the packet 1, executed transversely to the longitudinal axis A, substantially constant.

With particular reference to the first, second, third and fourth embodiments of the package 1, illustrated in Figures 1 to 7, each corner wall 17 comprises a first and a second panel 21 and 22, of substantially triangular shape, each of which starts from respective first and second vertex 19 and 20 and both converge towards the interior of packet 1 until they join along a common base 23, transversal to the respective connecting edge 8, 9, 10 and 11 of packet 1, defined by a first line creasing 24.

Preferably, the first and second panels 21 and 22 are triangular isosceles and each have two sides of the same extension, respectively 21a and 22a, and the common base 23.

More precisely, each side 21a of the first triangular panel 21 meets a corresponding triangular side 22a of the second panel 22 at respective third vertices 25, arranged at the ends of the common base 23.

It should be noted that the sides 21a and 22a of the first and second panels 21 and 22 define the side edges 18 of each corner wall 17.

Consequently, each corner wall 17 extends from the first vertex 19 to the third vertices 25 and from the third vertices 25 to the second vertex 20. The third vertices 25 of each of the corner walls 17, arranged along respective edges 8, 9, 10 and 11 of connection, are joined together by a second creasing line 26 which extends, transversely to the axis A of the package 1, on each portion of the front wall 2, of the rear wall 3 and of the two sides 4 and 5, affected from the side edges 18 of the corner walls 17.

The first and second creasing lines 24 and 26 are joined together at the third vertices 25 for the whole transversal development of the packet 1.

In particular, the first and second creasing lines 24 and 26 join the third vertices 25 of the corner walls 17 arranged along a respective connecting edge 8, 9, 10, 11 and at the same height along the longitudinal axis A.

In order to keep the outer perimeter of the packet 1 constant in correspondence with a cross section of the longitudinal axis A and of the third vertices 25, the first creasing lines 24 of each corner wall 17 have the same extension.

The second creasing line 26 defines on each side wall 2, 3, 4 and 5 a cusp 27 facing outwards from the overall dimensions of the packet 1.

Each cusp 27 is obtained from respective third and fourth panels 33 and 34 planes and mutually inclined to each other. The outward deformation, obtained from the relative inclination between the third and fourth panels 33 and 34, defining a cusp 27, compensates for the inward inclination of the first and second panels 21 and 22 which converge together along the first creasing line 24.

The third panels 33 and the fourth panels 34 are arranged respectively between the first and second panels 21 and 22 of the corner walls 17 arranged at the same height along the longitudinal axis A along a respective connecting edge 8, 9, 10 and 11 .

Alternatively to the angular walls 17 comprising respectively a first and a second triangular panel 21 and 22, each angular wall 17 of the packet 1 comprises a lenticular panel 28 concave towards the inside of the packet 1 whose lateral edges 18 are curved curved, as illustrated in figure 8.

In this embodiment, each portion of the front wall 2, of the rear wall 3 and of the two sides 4 and 5 affected by the curved curvilinear side edges 18 of the corner walls 17, is convex towards the outside of the package 1.

In order to keep the packet 1 in closed conditions, to preserve the integrity and the aroma of the cigarettes of the group 13, the collar 16 comprises at least two angular walls 17 each destined to engage with a respective angular wall 17 arranged in correspondence of the lid 14, along a respective connecting edge 8 and 9.

In particular, the internal face of the corner walls 17 arranged in correspondence with the lid 14 is joined with the external face of the corner walls 17 of the collar 16 to prevent the spontaneous opening of the package 1.

In fact, the angular walls 17 arranged in correspondence with the lid 14 have their internal faces relatively convex with respect to the external faces of the angular walls 17 of the collar 16, which are turned towards the interior of the package 1, so that they can be coupled reciprocally.

Preferably, in order to facilitate the coupling of the corner walls 17 of the lid 14 and of the collar 16 during the rotation of the lid 14 around the hinge line 15, the corner walls 17 of the collar 16 are beveled, that is, without one of the first and the second vertex 19 and 20.

With particular reference to Figures 1 to 3, a first embodiment of the package 1 is illustrated.

The packet 1 comprises an angular wall 17 in correspondence with the lid 14 and a succession of angular walls 17 in correspondence with the container 12, along each connecting edge 8, 9, 10 and 11.

In particular, each corner 7a of the head wall 7 defines the first vertex 19 of the lateral edges 18 of a respective angular wall 17.

Furthermore, the lid 14 has a lower edge 29 whose ends 30 define the second vertices 20 of the respective lateral edges 18 of the corner walls 17 adjacent to the front wall 2 and to the two sides 4 and 5.

With reference to the corner walls 17 adjacent to the rear wall 3 and to the two sides 4 and 5, the second vertices 20 of the respective side edges 18 are arranged along the connecting edges 10 and 11 of the rear wall 3 itself.

Preferably, the first and second creasing lines 24 and 26 of the corner walls 17 arranged in correspondence with the lid 14 are arranged at the same height as the hinge line 15 of the lid 14.

The first creasing lines 24 of the corner walls 17 connecting the rear wall 3 with the respective sides 4 and 5 are cut to allow the opening and closing of the package 1, by rotating the lid 14 around the hinge line 15, as shown in figure 3.

Considering each connecting edge 8, 9, 10 and 11 at the container 12, each corner wall 17 has at least one vertex 31, between the first and second vertex 19 and 20, in common with the subsequent corner wall 17.

A pair of angular walls 17 adjacent to the rear wall 3 and to the sides 4 and 5 in correspondence with the container 12, has the common vertices 31 with the angular walls 17 arranged in correspondence with the lid 14.

A pair of angular walls 17 adjacent to the front wall 2 and to the sides 4 and 5 in correspondence with the container 12, has the first vertices 19 arranged at the respective ends of an upper edge 35 of the container 12 which, in the closed condition of the package 1, is in contact with the lower edge 29 of the lid 14.

Furthermore, in correspondence with the sides 4 and 5, the lid 14 has two lower lateral edges 29a which depart from the ends 30 of the lower edge 29.

The container 12 has two upper lateral edges 35a which depart from the ends of the upper edge 35.

The lateral edges 29a and 35a divide the corresponding fourth panel 34 into two portions 34a and 34b, belonging respectively to the lid 14 and to the container 12.

In the closed condition of package 1, each lower lateral edge 29a is in contact with the respective upper lateral edge 35a.

These lateral edges 29a and 35a have in common, at one end of them, a third vertex 25 of an angular wall 17 adjacent to the rear wall 3 and to the sides 4 and 5.

It should be noted that each corner 6a of the bottom wall 6 defines the second vertex 20 of the corner walls 17, arranged in correspondence with the container 12 and adjacent to the bottom wall 6 itself.

The vertices 31, common to two successive angular walls 17, are joined together by third creasing lines 32, extending transversely to the A axis of packet 1.

More precisely, the third creasing lines 32 connect the common vertices 31 arranged on each connecting edge 8, 9, 10, 11 and at the same height along the longitudinal axis A, transversely surrounding the package 1 along the side walls 2, 3, 4 and 5.

Considering each side wall 2, 3, 4 and 5, the second and third creasing lines 26 and 32 are parallel to each other, according to a direction transversal to the longitudinal axis A.

In this way, the second and third creasing lines 26 and 32 define the third and fourth panels 33 and 34 which are inclined to each other at a respective cusp 27.

Preferably, the package 1 according to the first embodiment has sixteen corner walls 17, four for each connecting edge 8, 9, 10 and 11. In particular, four corner walls 17 are arranged in correspondence with the lid 14 and twelve corner walls 17 are arranged in correspondence with the container 12.

It follows that each side wall 2, 3, 4 and 5 of the package 1 comprises four cusps 27 defined by the respective third and fourth panels 33 and 34, inclined to each other. In particular, a cusp 27 in correspondence with the lid 14 and three cusps 27 in correspondence with the container 12. In this embodiment, the first creasing line 24 of each corner wall 17 is made in correspondence with the center line of the distance between the respective first and second vertices 19 and 20, according to a direction parallel to the longitudinal A axis.

With particular reference to Figure 4, a second embodiment of the package 1 is illustrated.

This embodiment differs from the first embodiment, in that the corner walls 17, arranged along each connecting edge 8, 9, 10 and 11, are made only in correspondence with the lid 14.

In fact, each connecting edge 8, 9, 10 and 11 in correspondence with the container 12 is shaped like a sharp edge (alternatively the edge can be rounded or beveled), as it does not have the aforementioned corner walls 17.

As regards the technical characteristics of the corner walls 17, reference is made to what was previously described for the first embodiment. In other words, the packet 1 according to the second embodiment has four angular walls 17, one for each connecting edge 8, 9, 10 and 11, in correspondence with the lid 14.

It follows that each side wall 2, 3, 4 and 5 of the package 1 comprises four cusps 27 defined by the respective third and fourth panels 33 and 34, inclined to each other.

In this embodiment, the first creasing line 24 of each corner wall 17 is made at the center line of the distance between the respective first and second vertices 19 and 20, according to a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis A. Furthermore, these first and second creasing lines 24 and 26 are at the same height as the hinge line 15.

With particular reference to Figure 5, a third embodiment of package 1 is illustrated.

This embodiment has, similarly to the first and second embodiments of the packet 1, the angular walls 17 along each edge 8, 9, 10 and 11 for connection in correspondence with the lid 14, for which the above considerations are referred to.

Unlike the embodiments described, this package 1 comprises, along each connecting edge 8, 9, 10 and 11 and in correspondence with the container 12, a single angular wall 17.

As regards the first vertices 19 of the angular walls 17 arranged in correspondence with the container 12 adjacent to the rear wall 3 and to the sides 4 and 5, there are common vertices 31 with the angular walls 17 of the lid 14.

As regards the first vertices 19 of the corner walls 17 arranged in correspondence with the container 12 adjacent to the front wall 2 and at the sides 4 and 5, they are arranged in correspondence with respective ends of the upper edge 35 of the container 12.

Each corner 6a of the bottom wall 6 defines the second vertex 20 of the corner walls 17.

In other words, the package 1 according to the third embodiment has eight corner walls 17, two for each connecting edge 8, 9, 10 and 11. In particular, four corner walls 17 in correspondence with the lid 14 and four corner walls 17 in correspondence with the container 12.

It follows that each side wall 2, 3, 4 and 5 of the package 1 comprises two cusps 27 defined by the respective third and fourth panels 33 and 34, inclined to each other, as illustrated in Figure 6.

In this embodiment, similarly to the previous ones, the first creasing line 24 of each corner wall 17 is made at the centerline of the distance between the first and second vertex 19 and 20, according to a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis A . Figure 7 illustrates a fourth embodiment of package 1.

The fourth embodiment is similar to the third embodiment and is distinguished from it only by the positioning of the first creasing line 24 of the corner walls 17 in correspondence with the container 12.

In fact, the first creasing line 24 is arranged, with respect to the back wall 6, at a distance equal to a part of the distance between the first and the second vertex 19 and 20, along a direction parallel to the axis A, between one third and one fifth.

Finally, with reference to Figure 8, a fifth embodiment of the package 1 is illustrated which presents, for each corner wall 17, the lenticular panel 28 concave towards the inside of the package 1.

In particular, the package 1 according to the fifth embodiment has eight corner walls 17, two for each connecting edge 8, 9, 10 and 11. In particular, four corner walls 17 in correspondence with the lid 14 and four corner walls 17 in correspondence with the container 12.

It follows that each side wall 2, 3, 4 and 5 of the package 1 comprises two convex portions each arranged between two respective corner walls 17.

With reference to Figures 9 to 18, the flat blanks from which it is possible to obtain the packets 1 according to the embodiments described are illustrated.

In particular, figures 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17 show first flat blanks 36 from whose folding the container 12 is obtained with the lid 14 hinged and in figures 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 second flat blanks are illustrated 48 from whose bending the collars 16 are obtained, intended to be associated with the respective first flat blanks, to obtain the packets 1 according to the various embodiments.

With reference to figures 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17, the first flat blank 36 has a longitudinal axis B of prevalent development.

The first blank 36 comprises, in succession along the longitudinal axis B and from top to bottom, a head panel 37, a main panel 38, a bottom panel 39 and a secondary panel 40.

The head panel 37 comprises a plurality of panels and side wings which, when folded, define the lid 14.

In particular, the head panel 37 comprises a central panel 46, intended to define the head wall 7, from which a plurality of creased lines 47 branch out, which, once folded, define the corner walls 17.

The creased lines 47 develop from respective edges 46a of the central panel 46, according to a direction inclined with respect to the longitudinal axis B by an angle comprised between 10 ° and 30 °.

With reference to Figures 9, 11 and 13, the creased lines 47 have a substantially rhomboidal weft whose vertices are connected by the first, second and third creasing lines 24, 26 and 32. The creasing lines 24, 26 and 32 are parallel between them in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal B axis.

In these embodiments, the creased lines 47 and the first, second and third creasing lines 24, 26 and 32 delimit the first, second, third and fourth panels 21, 22, 33 and 34 on the first blank 36.

With reference to Figure 17, the creased lines 47 have a substantially lenticular texture.

Head panel 37 is connected to main panel 38 by hinge line 15.

The main panel 38 is connected to the bottom panel 39 by a first weakening line 44.

The bottom panel 39 is connected to the secondary panel 40 by a second weakening line 45.

The hinge line 15, the first and second weakening lines 44 and 45 are parallel to each other in a direction transverse to the longitudinal B axis.

Two respective pairs of side panels 41 protrude from the main panel 38 and from the secondary panel 40 in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis B. The side panels 41 of each pair are arranged on opposite sides with respect to the longitudinal axis B.

According to the known art, respective fins 42 extend from the two side panels 41 flanked to the main panel 38 along a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis B.

In particular, the fins 42 are connected to the respective side panel 41 by means of weakening lines 43 having a direction of development transversal with respect to the longitudinal axis B.

By folding the side panels 41 and the fins 42 at 90 °, along the weakening lines 43, the sides 4 and 5 of the package 1 are obtained. By folding the main panel 38 and the secondary panel 40, along the first and the second line of weakening 44 and 45, the rear wall 3 and the front wall 2 of the package 1 are obtained respectively.

With particular reference to the blank 36 of Figure 9, it comprises a succession of rhomboidal weft creased lines 47 connecting the main panel 38 to a respective side panel 41 and the secondary panel 40 to a respective side panel 41.

The succession of creased lines 47 is intended to define, once the blank 36 has been folded, the respective connecting edges 8, 9, 10, 11 of packet 1.

The vertices of the rhombuses of the succession of creased lines 47 are connected to each other by the respective first, second and third creased lines 24, 26 and 32, delimiting on the first blank 36 the first, second, third and fourth panels 21, 22, 33 and 34.

With particular reference to the blank 36 of figures 13 and 15, the creased lines 47 define a single rhombus which connects the main panel 38 and the secondary panel 40 to the respective side panels 41. The vertices of the rhombuses are connected to each other by means of the first, second and third creased lines 24, 26 and 32 which delimit the first, second, third and fourth panels 21, 22, 33 and 34.

According to what is illustrated in Figure 17, the creased lines 47 which connect the main panel 38 and the secondary panel 40 to the respective side panels 41 have a curvilinear conformation.

According to what is illustrated in Figure 11, the flat blank 36 has no succession of creased lines 47 connecting the main panel 38 to a respective side panel 41 and the secondary panel 40 to a respective side panel 41. In this embodiment, the main panel 38 and the secondary panel 40 are connected to the respective side panels 41 by means of third weakening lines 49.

With particular reference to figures 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18, the second flat blanks 48 comprise the creased lines 47 designed to define, once the blanks 48 have been folded, the angular walls 17 of the collars 16.

With reference to the blanks 48 illustrated in Figures 10, 12, 14 and 16, they present the creased lines 47 with a rhomboid weft whose vertices are connected by first, second and third creasing lines 24, 26 and 32.

It should be observed that the rhomboid pattern of the creased lines 47 of the second blank 48 is similar to the pattern reproduced on the respective first blank 36.

In this regard, however, the second blank 48 illustrated in figure 18 has creased lines 47 having a curvilinear weft similar to the weft reproduced on the respective first blank 36. Furthermore, consequently, the second blank 48 of figure 18 has only the third line of creasing 32.

Finally, it should be noted that the second blank 48 may have a transverse development, with respect to the longitudinal axis B, such as to be at least partially facing all the side walls 2, 3, 4, and 5 of the container 12, wrapping more firmly the cigarette group 13.

The package 1 according to the present invention achieves important advantages.

In fact, although the connecting edges 8, 9, 10 and 11 comprise respective angular walls 17, the sections of the packet 1, made according to any plane transversal to the longitudinal axis A, have a constant external perimeter. Consequently, the sections made at the third vertices 25 are octagonal sections that have the same perimeter with respect to the rectangular sections made at the first and second vertices 19 and 20.

Finally, it should be noted that the considerations set out here relating to a packet 1 of cigarettes of the rigid type with a hinged lid 14, as per the attached figures, also apply to known packets of smoking articles, for example, with the hinge line 15 arranged in correspondence with of the rear wall 3 parallel to the longitudinal axis A, and / or with the hinge line 15 arranged in correspondence with a side 4, 5, and / or with the hinge line 15 arranged in correspondence with the head wall 7, and also for known packages of the rigid type without hinged lid.

Claims (10)

R I V E N D I C A Z I O N I 1) Packet of smoking articles, with longitudinal axis (A) of prevalent development, comprising four side walls (2, 3, 4, 5) defining a front wall (2), a rear wall (3) and a pair of sides ( 4, 5), a bottom wall (6) and a head wall (7), each side (4, 5) being joined to the front wall (2) and to the rear wall (3) through respective edges (8, 9, 10, 11) of connection, characterized in that it comprises along each of said edges (8, 9, 10, 11) for connecting the package (1) at least one angular wall (17) which has a variable transverse dimension along a parallel direction to the longitudinal axis (A) and is defined by its own lateral edges (18) which develop diverging starting from at least a first common vertex (19), foreseen along the edge (8, 9, 10, 11) of the package (1), and converging at least on a second common vertex (20), also foreseen along the same edge (8, 9, 10, 11) of the packet (1);
