Abstract

1393833 Coating carbon fibres by hotdipping, hot pressed fibres UNION CARBIDE CORP 9 July 1973 [10 July 1972] 32704/73 Headings C7D and C7F The bonding of carbon fibres in a nickel matrix improved by providing the fibres with a carbide layer by immersing them in a molton alloy bath comprising a metal e.g. Ti, Zr, Hfi, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, and Fe which reacts to form a carbide and an acid soluble metal e.g. In, Ge, Ga, Sn, Sb, Bi, Ag, Cu which does not react with carbon, and subsequently removing unreacted metal with an acid, e.g. nitric, hydrochloric or sulphuric. Ni may be deposited on the coated fibres by electrodes or electrolytre methods, thermal decomposition of carbonyls or halides or by sputtering, and the coated fibres hot pressed 700 to 1300‹C. in an atmosphere of e.g. nitrogen, argon xanon, or helium. A further metal may be applied to the Ni-coated fibres before pressing.
