1338539 Spring door closers VEREINIGTE BAUBESCHLAGFABRIKEN GRETSCH & CO GmbH 12 June 1972 [16 June 1971] 27307/72 Heading E2M In a tension spring door closer, for mounting beneath a door and having a piston 6 and cylinder 5 fluid damping mechanism, end pieces 15 and 16 of the piston and cylinder have spiral grooves to retain the ends of the spring 4 and are linked to a housing 1 and a door closer spindle 2 by a spindle 9 and four joint linkage 8 respectively; the spindle 9 being secured for rotation but not for axial movement in the housing and being screw threaded into the end part 15 so that the tension of the spring can be adjusted, a bore 25 in the spindle 9 allowing damping fluid, e.g. oil, to pass from space 3 to an adjustable flow restrictor 7 as the door closes. In the embodiment shown the bore 25 communicates via a transverse bore 26 and a groove 27 with an outlet passage 28 and the flow restrictor 7 is a screw adjustable from above to enter the passage 28; however in a further embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) an adjusting screw extends into the bore 25 along the axis of the spindle 9. A sealing gasket 20 is mounted on the spindle 9 between a plate 21 which engages the spindle and a plate 22 which is subject to the pressure of a compression spring 23. The same mechanism is described in Specification 1338540.
