Abstract

835,075. Making wood veneers. WRIGHT & SONS (VENEERS) Ltd., J. (Williamson, J. S.). Aug. 7, 1957, No. 24886/57. Class 145. Wood veneer is produced by cutting veneer sheets from a log or block, eliminating defects from the sheets, applying thermo-setting adhesive to one or both sides, stacking the sheets with the grain of the wood extending in the same direction, compacting the stack under a pressure of 80-140 lbs. per. sq. inch and in a steam tank at a temperature of 80‹F. to 212‹F. and finally slicing veneer sheets from the compacted block. Where the veneer is made from oak, the final slicing is preferably done at an angle of about 30 degrees to the face 20 perpendicular to the laminations 7 and the corners of the block are therefore sawn off at 15 and 16 to facilitate clamping at one corner and slicing at the other. For other woods, such as walnut and maple, the slices may be cut parallel to the face 20. The initial sheets may be stacked in the order and arrangement as cut but other grain effects may be achieved by reversing adjacent sheets end to end or face to face or both. Veneer sheets from different woods may be used in building up the stack, for example, alternate sheets of walnut and maple.
