Abstract
Methanol is produced from synthesis gas in the liquid phase by reacting CO with H2 in molar ratio CO/H2 0.5 to 5, in presence of a catalyst system (I) and one or more solvent; (I) consists of (a) copper cpd(s) and (b) metal alkoxide(s) of formula (RO)xM, where M = alkali or alkaline earth metal and R = 1-10C alkyl. The reaction is characterised by the addition to the reaction medium of methanol and/or alkyl formate(s) of formula HCOORf, where Rf = 1-20C alkyl. When methanol is added, molar ratio of methanol to copper is from 1 to 500 esp. 3 to 30, and molar ratio alkoxide to methanol is 0.05 to 500 esp. 0.1-10 when alkyl formate is added, molar ratio HCOORf to copper is from 1 to 1000 esp 4-400 and molar ratio alkoxide to HCOORf is pref.. from 0.05 to 500 esp 0.1-10 in the reaction medium. Copper cpd(s) are 0.001-1 molar esp 0.01-0.09 and metal alkoxide is 0.01-5 molar esp. 0.1-0.9. Temp. is 40-200 deg.C, esp. 60-150.
