Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain an alkane polyol, particularly ethylene glycol, in high selectivity and high yield even under a relatively low pressure, by reacting CO with H2 in the presence of a catalytic system consisting of a ruthenium compound, a rhenium compound and a specific co-catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: CO is reacted with H2 in the presence of a catalytic system consisting of a ruthenium compound, a rhenium compound and one or more selected from an alkali metal, alkaline earth metallic compound, NH3, a quaternary ammonium compound and organic amine compound as a co-catalyst preferably in an organic solvent at 150W300°C and 300kg/cm2G for 0.1W24hr to give an alkane polyol. A ruthenium and thenium compounds complexed with CO or complexed with CO and further H2 or one or more organic ligands are preferred as the ruthenium and thenium compounds. An alkali metallic iodide is preferred as the co-cotalyst.
