Abstract

A valve controlling liquid supply from a reservoir to the tip of a writing or coating tool comprises a piston and cylinder movable between open and closed positions and associated with a tapered flow path which is closed gradually as the piston engages with the cylinder to avoid abrupt increase in liquid pressure downstream of the valve when it is closed. The taper may be provided by a radially tapered inner wall of the cylinder or one or more tapered grooves formed spirally or running linearly parallel to the cylinder axis. The cylinder may have one or more cutaway sections in a circumferential wall at least in the region of the opening where the piston enters the cylinder, with the sections tapered circumferentially. The taper may alternatively be provided by a radial end taper or one or more tapered grooves in the piston.
