Abstract

Microcarrier for anchorage-dependent all culture comprises a spherical substrate of polymeric material having a density of about 1 g/cc. and a thin coating of silicate glass surrounding the substrate. Another microcarrier has a compsn. consisting in part of magnetic material. Pref. the material is incorporated in the microcarrier defined above as a thin coating on the polymeric material below the outer coating of silicate glass. The microcarrier has a density which closely matches that of typical cell culture media and embodies the desirable surface characteristics of silicate glass, but is less expensive to manufacture than known microcarriers having similar benefits. The provision of a magnetic material enables the microcarrier to be removed readily from the medium, using attraction by a magnetic field.
