Abstract
Prepn. of 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid (I) is carried out by (a) forming a mixt. of 2-hydroxynaphthalene (II) and a K base (III) using 0.8-1.2 (pref. 1.0-1.1) moles of (II) per equiv. of (III); (b) dehydrating the mixt; (c) introducing CO2 into the dehydrated mixt. while agitating at 255-280 deg.C and 20.90 psi until the ratio of (I) to 3-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid (Ia) is at least 2:1; and (d) recovering (I). (III) is pref. KOH or a mixt. of KOH and K2CO3. The mixt. of (II) and (III) can also contain a non-polar organic flux, esp. a mixt. of isopropyl-naphthalenes (IPN). Step (c) is pref. effected at 260-280 (esp. 260-270) deg.C and 30-80 (esp. 40-60) psi. (I) is useful as an intermediate in the mfr. of synthetic fibres and structural plastics. The process gives higher yields (40-60%) of (I) than prior art processes (cf. US1593816).
