Abstract

Half moulds for foundry use are hardened and dried by directing a flow of gas through the constituent material, by creating a pressure different between the upper working surface of the mould and the lower inactive surface. The pressure difference is between 1.013 x 10 power 3 and 1.013 x 10 power 5 Pa. To aid drying the gas is preheated to between 80 and 700 deg.C. It may include products of combustion, e.g. CO2 at a level between 0.5 and 20%, the main constituent being air. Progressive evaporation of water in the mould material has a cooling effect which improves the mechanical resistance of the moulds. The process is an efficient means of drying and hardening moulds, the ranges of pressure difference across the mould and preheat temp. being chosen for optimum results. The CO2 content of the hot gas aids polymerisation of certain types of binder in the sand, and the used gas can be drawn off and not allowed to escape into the workshop atmos., as may happen when drying is by burners under a hood.
