Abstract
Synthetic veneers are made by stacking numerous sheets of veneer to form a block pressed with a concave and a convex face, then slicing the block with a flat knife so that the slice intersects several sheets of the veneer. The starting veneer, having the colour of spring timber, is thinly coated with adhesive. A thin coating of synthetic resin, resembling summer timber in its colour, is applied to a plastic foil. The foil is then applied onto the veneer so that the resin adheres to the glue, the foil is then peeled off and the resultant coated sheet of veneer, which now carries a synthetic resin having a summer timber colour, is used in multiple layers for forming a stack which is pressed in a press to form a block with opposite convex and concave surfaces. This is then sliced into thin veneer sheets. The resultant product closely resembles the natural appearance of cryptomeria, which is a rare and expensive timber.
